Exploring the Scene in Gay Nice – The Globetrotter Guys

Exploring the Scene in Gay Nice - The Globetrotter Guys

Travel Guide to Gay Nice, France

Who knew Nice had one of the largest gay scenes in France after Paris and Marseille? We were pleasantly surprised to find that the beautiful coastal city of Nice on the Cote d’Azur has a thriving gay scene and that in all aspects of travel, Gay Nice has a lot to offer LGBTQ+ visitors.

With many gay bars, gay clubs, cruising clubs, queer book stores, saunas and gay events throughout the year, Nice has quietly grown into a super gay city destination. We have no doubt as more people learn about what it has to offer, it will become just as popular as other gay destinations in Europe such as Madrid, Stockholm and Mykonos.

The city itself is picture postcard perfect with its own unique character, culture and history. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and no matter where you explore you will be impressed by Nice, whether the narrow cobbled streets, hillside parks and waterfall or the beaches along the coastline.

Chateau du Gue aux Biches – Normandy Gay B&B

Chateau du Gue aux Biches - Normandy Gay B&B

Normandy Gay B&B In A Historic Chateau Near Bagnoles

The history of Chateau du Gue aux Biches goes way back but Albert Christophle implemented the biggest changes after he bought the place in 1868 as a hunting lodge. He was the Minister of Public Works in France and the creator of the town of Bagnoles. He was also the mayor and initiator of the very well-preserved Belle Époque neighbourhood of the town.

In 2017, we bought the château and have worked purposefully to renovate it into a Normandy gay B&B, respecting the history and the original details to bring it back to its former greatness. In August 2020, we moved permanently to France to pursue our dream and create a unique home where we look forward to welcoming you as our guests.

Bagnoles is a famous spa town in France. As far back as the Middle Ages, there are tales of the healing hot springs in the town and today there is a large spa that attracts guests from all over Europe.

Gay Lyon – The Nomadic Boys

Gay Lyon - The Nomadic Boys

The hottest men of France are officially from Lyon!

According to me, of course. Well obviously, I’m biased – this is Seby’s home ground, the city he was born and raised.

As well as the abundance of smokin’ hot French lovers, Lyon is also the foodie capital of France with a really pretty UNESCO listed Old Town (Vieux Lyon). Lyon has been a flourishing trading city since the Romans thanks to its strategic location at the confluence between two major rivers – the Rhône and Saône. The heart of city lies right at this point, an island-like peninsula called the Presqu’île…which is also where the bulk of the city’s gay scene can be found.

The southern section of the Presqu’île is the actual confluence point between the two rivers and is more residential. The northern side of the Presqu’île has a more commercial feel and has the main gay bars and clubs of Lyon, particularly between the two streets called: Place des Terreaux and Cordeliers. The Presqu’île is our favourite part of the city. Not only do the best gay parties happen right here, it’s also an exciting place to get lost in during the day, with cute narrow cobblestone streets, Renaissance-era mansions to awe at, hidden courtyards to explore and an abundance of excellent restaurants (called “bouchons”) everywhere!

Following our many trips to France’s gastronomical capital, we’ve put together our gay travel guide to Lyon featuring the best gay hotels to stay, the best bars, clubs, events, things to do, and many more practical tips for LGBTQ travellers.

Is Lyon safe for gay travellers?

Absolutely! France ranks as one of the gayest countries in the world. The French are famous for their “laissez-faire” attitude towards our LGBTQ community, namely, not interfering in matters that may seem too personal, and respecting the privacy of others.

All locals we met in Lyon did not bat an eyelid whenever they saw us holding hands or displaying other PDAs, particularly in the touristic areas – the Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon. To add to that, Lyon has a large student population with people from all over the world, which gives it an air of tolerance, open-mindedness and diversity.

Gay Nice – The Nomadic Boys

Gay Nice - The Nomadic Boys

With sunshine all year round, you can’t go wrong with choosing a trip to Nice. This is one of France’s top french cities. Its seaside location is a massive pull for tourists, and its sprawling, albeit surprisingly modern city, is truly breathtaking!

We always feel drawn towards Nice. Sure, Paris is nice, but there’s something particularly magical about Nice. Perhaps it’s the beach location? Or the clash of Mediterranean and Italian influences that intertwine with its culture? Or the winding streets that lead you by old buildings, bespoke restaurants and fascinating landmarks. Maybe also ’cause it’s so surprisingly gay? Whatever it is, we just can’t get enough! As far back as the 1700s, rich folk from all over Europe came here for their holiday. It was their relaxing getaway…and now, we’re also claiming it for us!!

The food, in particular, is noteworthy. We know the French love their food, but Nice is on a whole other level. They have the whole southern hospitality thing down. Seb and I could literally sense that the chefs in each restaurant pored over every aching detail of the dishes they prepared for us. The hard work really shows!

This is our gay travel guide to Nice including the best gay bars, clubs, events, hotels and more.

Winter in Paris – Washington Blade

Winter in Paris - Bill Malcolm

Winter in Paris is the perfect time to visit.. The crowds are gone. The weather is not as cold as many U.S. cities. Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in museums, it doesn’t matter anyway. Plus, Paris has a great gay scene and a gayborhood — The Marais.

Getting There

I snagged a great low fare on Delta Airlines. The service was exceptional and everything was free. Free hot dinner and breakfast, free headsets, free blankets and pillows, free eyeshades and more. Once in Paris, hop on the commuter rail to town, the RER-B then take the Metro to get to your hotel from the Gare du Nord Station.

Where to Stay

I stayed at The Moxy, a new Marriott brand geared for millennials. The rate was very reasonable (it varied by day with one day at just 93 Euros or around $110). It’s located near the Marais in the Bastille District and near no less than three Metro stations. You can walk to many of the major attractions or hop on the subway. Two nearby stores (Franprix) have everything you need including salad bars, hot sandwiches and great selections of wine.

Paris, the city of love, or the city of light, the capital of France and the third most popular destination in the world. It’s no wonder it’s also amongst the most photographed cities in the world and yet, everyone’s obsessed with Paris photography. Everyone searches for the best view of the Eiffel Tower and couples often book a Paris photoshoot to immortalise the romance. Paris pictures are simply magical when done right!

“Paris is always a good idea.” – Audrey Hepburn

Audrey was right, Paris is always a good idea, however, taking Paris pictures can be difficult. The best Instagrammable Paris places to visit are usually insanely crowded, which is why we highly recommend going to the hot spots during sunrise. Yes, it takes courage to wake up early, but trust us: it’s so worth it. We’ve visited a couple of times already and have collected the best places in Paris to take pictures!
