Guide to Gay Crete – The Nomadic Boys

Guide to Gay Crete - The Nomadic Boys

Ever since Seby found out that I’m originally Greek, he’s been begging for us to take a trip to gay Crete. A big fan of mythology, all things from Aphrodite to Achilles, it was like he was predestined to end up with a Greek fantasy of his very own.

I finally agreed to go on a trip, but only because I’d been watching the two Mamma Mia films and was getting serious Greek island envy. Just looking at images of the beaches was enough to get me all hot and bothered.

Full of history and culture, the fascinating backstories and tantalizing atmosphere can make anyone fall head over hells for Crete. Sure, the gay nightlife may not be as crazy as some of the other Greek islands, like Mykonos’ gay scene, but it’s still very much alive, pulsing with music and pure Cretan energy!

About Gay Crete

Crete is the largest island of Greece, so there’s a lot to see and do. Towns like Agia Galini, Hersonissos, and Chania are where you’ll find most of the gay friendly bars and clubs. Hersonissos is also a great beach spot, with sprawling golden sands and crystal blue waters that are perfect for diving. Though history buffs will find something to gag over anywhere as practically every street corner is brimming with ancient allure.

Gay Crete - The Globetrotter Guys

Crete was one of our first vacations as a gay couple and although there isn’t a huge gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this beautiful island and have returned since! Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from beautiful soft sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to explore by car.

During our trips we had no issues being gay in Crete and felt particularly comfortable around the touristy areas.

Gay Crete has thousands of visitors from all over the world every year and gay travel around Greece in general is very popular with the likes of Mykonos and Athens for example. In our Gay Crete Travel Guide we have put together the shortlist of the places we have stayed and visited, investigated what the gay scene is like and put together some unmissable trips for your visit!

Where to Stay in Gay Crete

We have been to Crete twice and being the largest island in Greece there are a lot of places to stay.

The first time we stayed in Hersonissos and the second time we split our time between Stalis and Malia. In both cases we made sure to explore as much of the island as possible.

Gay Crete Beach Vacations – Gay Star News

Gay Holidays in Greece are certainly linked with the most popular destinations of Mykonos, Athens and Thessaloniki. But have you ever considered visiting Crete?

Crete, the second largest island in Greece, is known for its crystal-clear beaches (many of which are awarded with a blue flag), beautiful cities with intense nightlife and handsome locals. So, this island will gift you lots of new experiences to remember!

Cretans are distinguished for their great hospitality, which has also become part of their culture. Their behavior is so honest and sincere, that you will feel like you are with your best friend.

That said, you will notice that some Cretans might become very ‘touchy,’ almost flirting. That’s due to their extreme friendliness and poor understanding of personal space, so don’t misunderstand and think that they are trying to hit on you because you will surely put yourself into a very awkward situation!

Gay Crete in a Nutshell

Gay Crete Say “Greece” to the travelling LGBT community and chances are most of them will think of Mykonos or Lesvos (aka Lesbos), but Crete — birthplace of Zeus, home to the Minoan civilization and the largest of the Greek islands — has much to offer the gay and lesbian traveller. Whether one’s interest is archaeology, lazing on the beach or seeing the sights, Crete impresses the visitor with its sheer size and variety of landscapes. To put Crete in perspective: Mykonos, at approximately 100 square kilometres, is about 50 percent bigger than Manhattan; Lesvos, at 1,630 square kilometres, is about half the size of Rhode Island. Crete, at more than 8,000 square kilometres, is 80 times bigger than Mykonos and bigger than the state of Delaware, but without so many people: its population is slightly more than 600,000 people, although it has several million olive trees and there are quite a few goats. What should be clear from this is that Crete is a big island and you are not going to see it all in one day. Indeed, I have lived here for 10 years and came to Crete on holiday six times in the three years before that and I still haven’t seen everything. So what is there on Crete for the LGBT tourist?
