Milwaukee Celebrates Gay Pride in June

Author: , May 8th, 2014

Pridefest Milwaukee 2014

We are the nations largest LGBT festival with permanent festival grounds, owned and operated entirely by volunteers each and every year. PrideFest Milwaukee does not have one paid employee, simply the dedication and devotion to bring together a festival each and every year for our community.

However, Milwaukee’s LGBT celebrations go all the way back to 1974, when 350 people attended the Gay People’s Union Ball. Other dances and parties followed in the years to come, but it wasn’t until 1988 that the first official events were hosted by the Milwaukee Lesbian/Gay Pride Committee. Several hundred people participated in the week-long celebration, which included a softball tournament at Mitchell Park, picnic, formal ball, and film festival.

Wausau, Wisconsin: The City That Killed Pride

Author: , July 5th, 2013

Wisconsin MapSome of the world’s largest Pride festivals happened around the world last weekend, but there was one lonely town in Wisconsin that sadly went without. It was the cold soul of Wausau City Council member David Nutting that led a charge against the city’s first proposed Gay Pride parade, and unfortunately, he won.

Daxx Bouvier, the main organizer of the event, said he put forth $15,000 of his own money to put the plan in motion, but was immediately disheartened by overwhelmingly negative feedback during his monthlong battle with the City Council. His thick skin could take a verbal beating, but was no match for the talons of Nuttig’s opposition.

At a city meeting earlier last month, Nuttig delivered a speech that roasted the gay community as “deviant-behaving individuals” that would transform “a beautiful family-oriented park” into a den of iniquity.

Pride Parades in Bulgaria, Wisconsin Cancelled

Author: , June 22nd, 2013

Gay Pride Flag San FranciscoA gay pride celebration in Bulgaria has been cancelled because of security issues. Gay Star News reports:

Pride has been canceled in Sofia capital of Bulgaria, due to fears that anti-gay extremists may attack the participants. Organizers of Sofia Pride that was scheduled for tomorrow (22 June) say the event has been canceled due to the insistence of city’s municipality and the Interior Ministry.

It’s not the only Pride celebration cancelled this week. So was the first-time pride event in Wausau, Wisconsin:

It appears Wausau, Wisconsin will not be getting its first ever gay pride parade today as previously planned. Organizers for the parade have now canceled the event after what they say has been a backlash of bigotry from the Wausau community. Green Bay Press Gazette reports: Daxx Bouvier had planned to hold a gay pride parade at 3 p.m Saturday, but he decided this week to cancel the event in the wake of negative response from a Wausau City Council member and in articles from several local media sources.

Sad when fear and prejudice conquer love and freedom.

Milwaukee Pride Draws Record Numbers

Author: , June 14th, 2013

Even with so-so weather, Milwaukee Pride 2013 still managed to draw a lot of visitors. Chicago pride reports:

Despite chilly and sometimes overcast weather, PrideFest Milwaukee drew slightly higher attendance this year than in 2012, when weather conditions were perfect. PrideFest officials said 28,340 patrons came through the Summerfest gates June 7-9, about 277 more people than in 2012, which saw record revenue for the event. A strong opening-night audience for gay performer Andy Bell, who drew 8 percent more people than last year’s opening performer Belinda Carlisle, helped set the pace for a busy day on Saturday, which was headlined by the Indigo Girls.

Andy Bell? I love Andy Bell!

Quick Escapes for Business Travelers in Milwaukee

Author: , March 14th, 2013

Heading to the midwest for a conference? If your destination happens to be Milwaukee, you could find yourself headed to the Delta Center. But, with any luck, you’ll have a few hours here and there where you aren’t tasked with waltzing up and down the concourses within. In an effort to get you outside the boardroom and into the wilds of the Cream City, we’re offering up two restaurants, two attractions, and one bar that you can hit with just a few extra hours between meetings.

EAT: You might not expect to find authentic German cuisine in the capital of Wisconsin, but it’s here, and it’s quite close to the downtown convention center. Mader’s Restaurant is home to some of the best reuben sandwiches you’ll ever find, and if you let your imagination run a little wild, you’ll probably forget that you’re in the U.S. It’s a great time for those who appreciate atmospheres.
