New York State Road Trip – Go Girlfriend

Upstate New York - pixabay

My mom recently moved to New York, but she hasn’t had a chance to explore much of her new state. So when I started planning a New York state road trip upstate, she was really excited not only to travel but to travel with me, her youngest daughter. Mom has not had the opportunity to explore New York State much so I found her excitement about the trip quite rewarding and I hoped that the experience would not let her down.

I highly recommend road trips as a form of travel with your aging parent. It’s a great way to bond – the travel time is great for story-telling, singing and making memories. I also recommend a road trip through Upstate New York for a dose of the outdoors and relaxation, stopping in the towns of Watkins Glen and 1000 Islands. Each destination is an easy road trip from NYC and both are not terribly far apart from each other, making it easy to do hit both in one weekend. For us, beginning in New York’s famous Finger Lakes area, made for a great stomping ground for people of all ages, with a diverse palette of food, activities, and most importantly, a sense of tranquility. Plus, there’s a beautiful scenic drive between them along part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, one of the first roads in America to be designated as a National Scenic Byway. You’re very likely to return home refreshed and with new memories to share with your loved one.

If there is time for an extra excursion, Chautauqua is a wonderful choice for a final stop on this trip. It’s located near Jamestown, which is past Buffalo, and has a number of special attractions you can’t see anywhere else including the National Comedy Center and the Lucy-Desi Museum. You won’t laugh nearly as hard anywhere else on this trip, or for days after you arrive back home – totally worth the additional driving.

Juniper Hill Bed & Breakfast – Finger Lakes Gay Bed & Breakfast

Juniper Hill Bed & Breakfast - Trumansburg Gay Bed & Breakfast

Juniper Hill Bed & Breakfast seeks to create the perfect combination of staying at a luxury inn and at your best friend’s home. Truly located in the heart of the Finger Lakes, this fully restored Colonial Revival home was built in 1921 and is privately sited on four acres of land.

Over the last nine years, we have painstakingly restored every inch of Juniper Hill, from the luxury guest rooms and baths to the formal gardens with cast iron fountain. We have tried to bring back all the original charm of the mansion, while also adding all the modern amenities expected from a five star luxury hotel.

There is a three course gourmet breakfast served every morning with early coffee available right outside your door at 8 am. You’ll always find a homemade sweet to indulge in, from brownies, biscotti, or chocolate chip cookies to homemade hand-dipped chocolates.

Personal refrigerators are in every room, along with 32″ flat screen televisions and DVD players, gas or electric fireplaces to take away that winter chill, iPod alarm clocks and sound machines, and free WiFi. Luxury pillow top mattresses are dressed with seven layer bedding and 300 plus thread count sheets.

You will find over 100 American Impressionist paintings throughout the bed and breakfast. This beautiful collection can make a rainy day come to life.

One of our favorite rooms is the library and game room, where you can pick a DVD from a vast selection to enjoy in your room or play one of the many available games and puzzles, from scrabble to backgammon or cribbage. Relax with a game and a glass of wine you picked up on your day’s excursion on the wine trail.

Juniper Hill has easy access to year round activities. Many treats are in the village of Trumansburg, just a short stroll away. From five star dining at Hazelnut Kitchen, as well as other fantastic restaurants, pizza shoppes, Gimme Coffee, Life So Sweet Chocolate Shoppe, and other wonderful eclectic boutiques, and book stores, and more. You can even walk to one of the best 18 hole golf courses in the Finger Lakes.

Once you get into your car, we are 10 minutes to Cayuga Lake and the Cayuga Wine Trail, about 12 minutes to Seneca Lake and the Seneca Lake Wine trail.

Ten miles gets you to Ithaca, home of Cornell University, and Ithaca College and Ithaca Commons, famous for too many wonderful restaurants and shops to even start to mention. Minutes away are award-winning hiking, waterfalls and gorges, swimming, museums, and antiquing. So much to mention, we have a very full activities page on our website.

I tell our guests, you can do as little or as much as you like here in the Finger Lakes. Whether you’re here for the wines, the outdoors, or visiting loved ones, we promise that you will feel right at home at Juniper Hill.
