Our History:

The Painted Hills Vacation Cottages & Retreat is a family business - owned and operated by the mother/daughter team of Barbara and Aruna Jacobi. Natives of Germany, the Jacobi family has been living in the U.S. for almost thirty years.

After ten years of running a successful restaurant in Seattle's famous Pike Place Market, the Jacobi family fell in love with Eastern Oregon, and decided to make the move. After settling in the small town of Mitchell, the family spent years remodeling two older homes inside and out, transforming them into beautiful, creativeO works of art. Barbara, a writer and master gardener, created a series of intricate gardens to connect the homes, filled with many magical nooks and secret hideaways.

In 2008, Painted Hills Vacation was officially born. Then in 2015, Painted Hills Vacation acquired a third property to expand the growing business. Barbara, with the help of some local handymen, remodeled it lovingly, and added a beautiful "dorm" space on the lower level with two bathrooms and 10 more individual beds.

When not keeping up the cottages and gardens at Painted Hills, Barbara and Aruna live on a thirty-three acre ranch out on Burnt Ranch Road, about fifteen miles from Mitchell, past the Painted Hills and close to Sutton Mountain along the John Day River.

They have come to know and love the area, and are happy to share it with their guests - all the places off the beaten track. They can point you in the right direction to find the most beautiful hiking trails, the best places for fishing and swimming along the John Day river, and the wonderful scenic backroads and landscapes in the Painted Hills region. Barbara can usually be found in her gardens taking care of her plants, and is always happy to share a special moment with her guests.

Come as a stranger and leave as a friend!
