Gay Whistler - The Nomadic Boys

What do you get when you mix together a bunch of gay boys, a giant rainbow flag and a huge pile of Canadian snow? The Whistler Pride and Ski Festival of course!

We were very excited to attend the 26th annual Whistler Pride week in January 2018. We love skiing, especially gay ski festivals as they always have the best parties.

Where is Whistler?

Whistler is a small town north of Vancouver in the British Columbia province of Canada. It’s famous for having one of the largest ski resorts in North America and for hosting some of the events of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The town is surrounded by two mountains: Whistler (2,184m/7,165ft) and Blackcomb (2,436m/7992ft). There are over 200 marked ski trails in between the two mountains, catering to all difficulty levels: green for beginners, blue for intermediate, black for advanced and double blacks for people who are just plain mad!

The Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is one of the biggest and best LGBTQ ski events in North America. We absolutely loved it and highly recommend it to all gay travellers seeking out a gay ski event to attend. To show you just how awesome it was, here are our 5 amazing things to do during the Whistler Pride week.

WinterPride Coming to Whistler

Author: , January 22nd, 2014

Whistler Winter PrideEveryone is welcome at WinterPride’s annual celebration of diversity.

Whether gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual or straight — single, coupled or swinger — circuit queen or leather-fetish aficionado — Whistler’s annual WinterPride ski week has something for everyone, and the only key to participation is an open mind.

Of course, following the mantra ski, eat, celebrate, repeat doesn’t hurt either.

Taking place this year from Jan. 26 to Feb.2, WinterPride is one of the leading ski weeks in the world and a must-attend festival for those wanting to celebrate diversity. Over 3,000 people are expected to arrive from Canada, the United States and internationally in Whistler over the week long period, and already the energy in the Village is palpable.

Gay Travel Review: Whistler Winter Pride

Author: , March 4th, 2011

Whistler Winter PrideMoments after arriving in Whistler, Canada, I find myself walking down the main drag in a harness, with straps dangling and my crotch scrunched up in a tidy triangle. And the boys are staring at me. I hadn’t noticed before, but more and more gays are revealing themselves with their stares as my boyfriend Kevin and I walk down Skiers Approach towards the slopes.

“Who knew that I would be in a harness so fast,” I joke, elbowing Kevin as a few scattered groups of North Face-clad men looked our way. Kevin rolls his eyes, marking the official start of my WinterPRIDE!

Earlier in the day, as I bounced along the spectacular Sea-to-Sky Highway on Pacific Coach Lines, the area’s plentiful bounty repeatedly crossed my mind. The twists and turns of the newly enlarged highway hug the mountainside, with shimmering lakes and fir-studded slopes reaching skyward. Without a doubt one of the Canada’s most memorable drives, the 70-minute journey is an excellent primer for what waits ahead in Whistler.

BC: Winter Olympics to Host GLBT Pavilion

Author: , February 5th, 2010

I’ve been asked a lot if I’ll be attending the Winter Olympics this year – after all, Vancouver and Whistler aren’t terribly far from Portland. I answer the same way as I do when asked about attending most big events: “I won’t be there while the Olympics are happening, but I was just there.” In writing about travel, it’s often handier to conduct research ahead of an event, whether it’s the upcoming Gay Games (I toured Cologne last summer), this month’s Sydney Mardi Gras (I checked out the sites there in September), or the Olympics.

I road-tripped to B.C. in November, not only to dig up details on what to do in Vancouver and Whistler during the Olympics, but also to find out more about one of North America’s foremost gay parties, WinterPride, also known as Whistler Gay and Lesbian Ski Week. There’s a ton going on right now, and never before has an Olympics event had its very own GLBT pavilion (called PRIDE House,, set up inside the Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre. Even cooler – the very day following the Olympics closing ceremonies, Whistler’s WinterPride ( kicks off, running March 1-8.

I hadn’t been to Whistler since the ’90s, and I was happy to see plenty of improvements without any loss of its friendliness and ski-town charm. The once slow, heavily trafficked Sea to Sky Highway is still absolutely stunning, but now it’s widened and straightened, making the drive far quicker (just be sure to carry snow tires and chains in winter).
