Latin America Gay Pride - The Nomadic Boys

During our travels in Latin America, we went to some pretty awesome gay pride events, particularly in Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay.

The most famous is of course in Sao Paolo, which is the largest in the world – these guys sure know how to put on a decent party. Here are our top gay pride events we discovered in Latin America during our travels, which you also need to check out.

São Paulo Pride in Brazil

In all lists about the largest gay pride events, the “Parada do Orgulho LGBT de São Paulo” always comes out top: it is famous for having the largest gay pride festival in the world, with estimates of around 5 million people attending – simply incredible!

It all began in 1997 as a modest political march by the LGBTQ “Paulistas” (local nickname for the people of São Paulo). Today the São Paulo Pride has mushroomed into one mammoth colourful pink event, whilst still retaining a strong political stance, particularly in light of the high levels of homophobic violence across the country.

São Paulo Pride takes place in June. We recommend checking their Facebook events page for the most up-to-date information about the next event.

We got excited when one of our favourite Netflix shows, “Sense8” used Sao Paolo pride for sexy Lito to come out, then publicly kissed Hernando in front of everybody. The cast even attended the 2016 parade and had their own raunchy float.

Sao Paulo Pride – The World’s Largest Gay Pride Parade

Author: , May 5th, 2014

Sao Paulo Gay Pride 2014The world’s largest gay pride parade took place in Sao Paulo yesterday.

President Dilma Rousseff, who is seeking another term in October elections, gave a message of support via Twitter. “People from around the country are in Sao Paulo today to participate in #paradalgbt,” Rousseff tweeted, reminding her followers there is a hotline people can call in Brazil if they are attacked because of their sexuality.

They were surrounded by mainly young, beer-swigging marchers dressed as anything from angels to devils and police officers. “We attended mass in a church near here and then came to the march,” said Cassia Maria, 53. “I am Catholic — apostolic and Roman. But I stick my fingers up against discrimination,” she smiled as her husband viewed on his cellphone footage of examples of physical abuse meted out to gay people in Brazil.

Lesbian Travel: Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Silver Lining

Sao Paulo, Brazil - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

São Paulo is the kind of city that locals love to hate; like any metropolis in the world, you’ll want to scream during rush hour, complain about the crowds (the population is a little over 11 million), whine about the parking prices and cost of living. However, once you take a deep breath and remind yourself you’re in the eigth largest city in the world, you’ll certainly find its silver lining.

You’ll grow to love the glow of the city when it’s sunny outside and also its poetic gloom on rainy days; you’ll learn that the outdoor tables, no matter how gritty, are the most privileged spots at bars and restaurants; you’ll be surprised with how culturally diverse this city is; and you’ll become addicted to the unstoppable activities day and night. I might be biased, considering I’ve lived here all my life, but I think you’ll agree with me after visiting my humble recommendations below. You’ll notice that the titles are in Portuguese, so you’ll be vaguely familiar with our language when you get here.

So now the question is: why place São Paulo in the Queer Girl City Guide? I could go on forever, but here are a few reasons:

We’ve been voted the city with the biggest Pride by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006, so you’ll have no problem finding the queer crowd during your stay.
