The Eiffel Tower – Keep Calm and Wander

Eiffel Tower - Alain

There’s no doubt that the magnificent Eiffel Tower is France’s most photographed and most visited attraction. You’ve never been to Paris if you’ve never seen or visited the Eiffel Tower. And when you’re in font of the towering structure, what would you do?

Strike a pose. Take a selfie. Ask a stranger to take a photo of you. Or in my case, set up the tripod and click the timer. Then pose, like nobody is watching.

The magnificent Eiffel Tower needs no introduction. We all know what it is and we all dream to conquer it one day. Whether you look at it from afar or stand at the bottom of it, this masterpiece will sweep off your feet away. Boy, it did to me! Can you imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower? I can’t.

Pont des Amours – Keep Calm and Wander

Pont des Amours - Alain

Pont des Amours or Lover’s Bridge is an iron bridge at the threshold of Lac de Annecy. From the look of it, this is just an ordinary bridge in a charming town in France, called Annecy.

The first bridge was made of wood and it was built to give people a good view of the wonderful Annecy Lake. It was later rebuilt with iron by Charles Galletto. And what a view it is! Boats moored on the banks and arched trees on the side add a romantic setting for whoever passes by. The bridge connects the European Gardens and Paquier Esplanade.

This bridge, however, has a dark past – it used to be a rendezvous for prostitutes. But today, the bridge is a rendezvous for lovers. Legend has it that whoever you kiss in the middle of this bridge, you will stay together for life! Yes, forever!

Charming Annecy, France – Keep Calm and Wander

Annecy, France

Here are 15 photos of Annecy, a charming little town in France, near the border with Switzerland. These photos only show the side of the town along the canal. Don’t call it the “Little Venice of France” because it’s farther from the truth – few tourists.

I think, one of the things to do here is to walk along the canals to see the town’s delightful beauty. The colourful houses’ reflections on the water on a sunny day is splendid! Take a leisurely walk at the Old Town and be amazed at the historical value of some medieval buildings around. Don’t also forget to take your lunch at one of the restaurants there. If you can’t afford, get an ice cream! LOL…

Annecy is a two-hour ride by train and can be explored by a day trip from Lyon. I arrived there at 9:30 in the morning and took a train back to Lyon at 3 in the afternoon. I think there’ 1 or 2 trains every hour.

A Gay Ski Week in the French Alps

skier - pixabay I’ve always been a bit dubious about my friend Mario’s vacation choices – he’s a big fan of gay cruises – so when he suggested a ski trip I was at first a little hesitant. After having learnt to ski on a few family holidays in Australia, since moving to London I hadn’t really got into the swing of regular winter mini-breaks to the ski resorts of Europe. By the time you add on ski hire, lift passes and new thermals, that amazing ‘cheap deal’ always seems to end up as quite an expensive vacation. Mario assured me that this was different – a totally all-inclusive package to one of the top ski resorts in France. He had rounded up a group of nine gays, all of fairly limited skiing ability. Our flight out of Gatwick airport was early. Really early. Mario marshalled us together at the check in desk – all present in body, even if the coffee had yet to kick-start our personalities. After a short flight to Grenoble and a (relatively) painless coach transfer, we arrived at our hotel in Les Deaux Alpes. I am always slightly taken aback by the overwhelming beauty of the French Alps – endless soaring peaks, their snow-covered slopes so dazzling white that it almost hurts to look at them. The organisation of our operator was impressive – hire gear and lessons were quickly sorted and we were soon settling into the bar to work our way through the cocktail menu. This was my first all-inclusive package trip and I hadn’t quite appreciated what that meant, but at dinner on our first night it became clear – all the food and all the alcohol was included – as much as you want! I’m not known for my self-restraint at the best of times, but this was a recipe for disaster.
