TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Meeting Interesting People

Douglas Alexander and Erik Alexander Douglas Alexander and Erik Alexander with their precious baby girl[/caption]

It is so hard to wrap my head around at what this past year has been like. This time last year Douglas and I continued our dialogue about adopting a baby. Although we had talked about it many times in the past, this is when the conversations really became much more in depth.
October of 2015 started the serious discussions about whether or not we were ready and when we realized we were… just how the heck we were going to make it happen.
I’ll first of all say this… EVERY SINGLE PERSON you know in life, you have met for a purpose.
There is a reason for everything, you just may not know it now. And in time, the reasons reveal themselves. We reached out to everyone that we knew of that have adopted, which was not a lot of people. And most of them did not get back to us. So we were left full of unanswered questions and a path we wanted to go down, but absolutely no idea how to go down it.
Douglas & ErikSo I suppose we started like any other couple would that wanted to adopt. GOOGLE. We found 2 agencies that were located on the west coast that seemed like our type of route. We would have to fly there and begin orientation. The wait time for gay couples usually ranges between 3 to 5 years. But we were ready and eager to wait. We made the call and requested our starter packet. And we waited…
The very next day we received an email from one of the original parents we had reached out to months prior. This person was actually co workers with our neighbor at the time. She had given us his email and we reached out to him. As life would have it, a few months later, he responded. He knew of an adoption attorney that was in need of a family, particularly a gay family that was ready to adopt. So he gave us the attorney ‘s contact and we immediately reached out to her.
It was the first week of November and I remember exactly where we were, what we were doing and how we felt. When she said that she had a birth mother in our city… Our hearts jumped. But when she said that the birth mother was particularly looking for a same sex couple… our hearts nearly jumped out of our chests. We both looked at each other in our kitchen with our eyes as big as saucers and with cautious optimism asked what we needed to do. We frantically composed a bio with a few pictures to send the birth parents to hopefully, maybe match. We sent it over and all we could do was wait.
That night we left a restaurant and were in the neighborhood of where the hospital where the baby we were hoping to match with was. As soon as we passed it a huge shooting star shot across the sky. In New Orleans you really don’t see shooting stars.
We were amazed and just hoped that could just be a devinely planned sign.
We found out the next day that she wanted to meet us in person. As much as we wanted to shout from the rooftops and tell everyone we knew… we knew it needed to be kept secret. We heard so many heart breaking stories about how some adoptions fall through, and we didn’t want to jinx anything. As hard as it was to keep quiet, that is what we did.
Douglas & ErikWe met with the birth parents multiple times, and each time got to know them and their families a little bit better.
We soon found out that we indeed matched. They picked us! As soon as that became clear, we scrambled to get the nursery in order! It was quickly transformed into a peaceful wonderland. It was exactly how I envisioned it.
We knew that ad potion has high points and low points. We also knew that the baby was born at 32 weeks. That is a little premature. She needed to stay in the NICU until she was healthy enough to be discharged. We had a few close calls on finalizing. We knew the birth mother started to get attached to the baby as she was in the hospital. It even was told to us that she had changed her mind in the 11th hour. It was being labled as a “failed adoption”.
All I could do was cry. It felt like there was a death in the family. Everything had been done on our end. We did everything we needed to do. We even had a brand new nursery. I just prayed that I could get my heart in a place to accept it and be happy for the mother. To just allow myself to know how difficult it must have been for her. To put myself in her place. As hard as it was, I did.
And then, the phone rang.
It was about the birth mother. She again, changed her mind and said the papers would be signed on Friday. Of everything that we went through… this was the hardest to wrap my mind around. I was just in 2 days of mourning and then all of a sudden I am to be completely over joyed? How could I be? I was more scared than anything, just because I was terrified It could fall through again. However, Friday came… and we adopted our baby. Our beautiful
Roberta Allison Mae Alexander… “Alli Mae.”
We were told at first we would wait between 3-5 years. We ended up waiting 3 and half weeks.
No one we have talked to, the agency, social worker, attorney, no one has heard of an adoption that fast. But it happened. As hard as some of the days were to get through… we made it. And we wouldn’t have changed anything that happened. It all made us stronger in the end. We are so grateful for both the birth mother and birth father. They both have such supporting and special families. We are honored that they chose us and this wonderful life brought us all together at this very important time. We will always be eternally grateful to all of them.If you and your partner are searching in hopes to find a baby just know… it will come in its right time. You will know in your heart. Talk to each other. Lean on each other. And if you need to, cry with each other. Sometimes, adoptions do fail. And when they do, have faith that you will pick up the pieces and march forward. Stay strong. Think positive. What will be, will be. You are here for a purpose. You meet everyone in your life for a reason. And everything that happens in your life is destined. Always remember that.

TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: New Orleans, Where the Good Times Roll On and On

New Orleans gay

New Orleans is simply too much to write about in just one column so we are going to make this a 3 part column for the next two weeks. We have been to New Orleans several times over the years and like San Francisco, it is a city that you keep wanting to go back to. It never changes but yet it does change. Partying is the number one thing to do in New Orleans however they do have fabulous restaurants, bars, museums and art galleries which we will talk about in the next columns.
New Orleans is always busy and crowded so be sure and reserve  early.
Blue60We have found a new Guest House which is within walking distance to the French Quarters but far enough away not to be affected by the loud noises. The Blue60 Guest House was formerly a Bed and Breakfast and the new owner, Joshua Smith purchased it a couple of years ago and has refurbished it wonderfully. He has sunk a great deal of time and money in restoring and updating it. Will is the manager and they both are on top of everything.
blue60 - New OrleansThey make your stay so enjoyable. That is why they have so many repeat guests that return again and again. The house was built in 1842. Each of their 5 guest rooms offers the convenience of a private outdoor entrance, private bathrooms and full amenities including a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, the use of a charcoal BBQ on the back patio , free WIFI and use of the Hot Tub.
blue60 - New OrleansThe rooms are very large and spacious. The Guest House is located in the Fauborg Marigny district just to the east of the French Quarter. Within just a couple of blocks you will find a variety of restaurants and bars. There is also a large Walgreens just a block away. And if you are real lucky you will be there when his Mother is there from out of state. She is FUN, FUN, FUN!
Their address is 1008 Elysian Fields Avenue. You can email them at info@blue60guesthouse.com and their website is www.blue60guesthouse.com Their phone is: 504.324.4311 We have stayed in New Orleans several times and this is our very favorite place to stay. Joshua and Will care about their guests and will do most anything to make your stay in New Orleans perfect for you.
There are hundreds of restaurants in New Orleans and we highly suggest these:
For fine dining we enjoy:
VACHERIE, 827 Toulouse Street, http://vacherierestaurant.com/
EAT, 900 Dumaine Street, http://eatnola.com/
Jarred is the owner of both of these fine restaurants and each has a great atmosphere and extremely professional and friendly staff.
For wonderful Italian we enjoy:
MONA LISA’s, 1212 Royal Street, https://www.facebook.com/Mona-Lisa-NOLA-318143785407 We enjoy this restaurant because it is FUN place to dine. Even thou you don’t know any of the other guests, everyone talks to one another. The owners, Tom and Farrow are extremely FUN and on top of everything.
For true Cajun cuisine we enjoy:
THE CHEEZY CAJUN, 3325 St. Claude, http://www.thecheezycajun.com/

TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Cleveland Rocks

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Stone Gables B&BWe recently visited Cleveland and it was our first time there. We were very pleasantly surprised by the city. We stayed at the STONE GABLES Bed and Breakfast at 3806 Franklin Blvd. Richard and Jim are great hosts.
They have owned the B and B for several years and really know what their guests want and how to treat their guests. The house is a stone mansion that has been completely restored and each guest room has it’s own distinct decor. They have a very nice breakfast each morning in the dining room.
Stone Gables B&BThey have fenced off-street parking for their guests. Wi-Fi is located throughout the entire house. Each guest room has it’s own private bath. They are conveniently located just a few blocks from Lake Erie and transportation to everywhere in the city. They are located in the old Ohio City historic center in west Cleveland.
Cleveland’s famous Market Center is within walking distance plus many restaurants and shops They are about a mile from downtown Cleveland. We highly suggest this Bed and Breakfast. Their toll free number is 877.215.4326 and their website is www.stonegables.net and email them at stonegablesbnb@yahoo.com
Cleveland’s downtown is a very dynamic place. They really have it together downtown. We were quite impressed with it. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is right downtown and it truly is amazing. Even if you are not into Rock and Roll, this is a MUST SEE museum, www.rockhall.com
cleveland christmas houseAnother museum we took in was the house for the movie, A CHRISTMAS STORY movie, www.achristmasstoryhouse.com It brought back a lot of memories the movie of course is a classic. For a smaller museum they have done it extremely professional. Their staff is very friendly.
Before going to Cleveland be sure and check out the Visitors and Convention’s website to get a complete listing of museums, galleries, shopping and other things to do.http://www.thisiscleveland.com/ .
Also check out http://cleveland.gaycities.com/ for what Gay activities are going on. In our travels from coast to coast we find that bars come and go and they have an updated list of bars. The LGBT Community Service Center has been serving the community since 1975 and they have lots of information for travelers. http://lgbtcleveland.org/index.html

TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Kansas City Rally/Protest

Kansas City Protest Kansas City ProtestOver a thousand people in greater Kansas City, MO attended a special Anti Prez Trump Inauguration Day protest today. The Rally began at the World War I Museum which is across the street from the Union Station. Several speakers spoke and then the parade went through the streets of Kansas City began and everyone walked about a mile to City Hall. A VERY heavy Police presence was on high alert on horseback, on foot and patrol cars. They even had a couple of drones to check things out. Fortunately the rally and parade were a peaceful one and without any problems at all. Kansas City ProtestThere was a very large variety of people at the rally… Mothers and Fathers with their babies, Gays and Lesbians, Jews, Blacks, Muslims and hundreds of United States citizens who are simply fed up with the new direction that the country is going. They ranged in ages from toddlers to people in their 80’s. At City Hall more speakers addressed the audience. Kansas City ProtestIt was an event that everyone was thrilled with and very glad that they attended. They had pallbearers that carried a casket in the parade representing the death of America. At some point in life, being quiet is simply NOT an option. Each of us needs to stand up and be counted. There needs to be a place at the table for EVERYONE ! Be safe and sane, but we all have to stand up for our rights. As we go through life we meet literally hundreds and hundreds of people in our travels from coast to coast. Many, we stay in touch with and meet again and again in our travels. One such person is Sir Ivan. Actually Sir Ivan has 3 names. Born Ivan Wilzig, He changed his name to Sir Ivan many years ago. He is also known as THE PEACEMAN. Check out this website on Sir Ivan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Wilzig and http://sirivan.com/ We first met Sir Ivan thru his Mother, Naomi Wilzig who was one of the finest people that we have ever met in our travels. She owned the World Erotic Art Museum in South Beach, Florida. She gave away millions to different charities including many for the LGBT community. Sadly, she past in April last year. She will be sadly missed by thousands of people. Last year, she was our most memorable person of the year. She passed on her spirit and kindness to her son Sir Ivan when he was just a young man and he has been sharing his wealth and life with many charities and organizations to make a better world for all. He created The Peaceman Foundation which is a non-profit organization that battles hatred, violence and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a large array of different organizations. One particular area of interest is in helping LGBT youth who have been affected by bullying and violence, to prevent suicides and other long-lasting negative effects, such as P.T.S.D. TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD – Melvyn's Restaurant, Palm Springs

melvyn's to use outside When we travel from coast to coast we usually do not know where to dine to have a memorable dining experience. Once we find a fabulous place, we go back again and again and again. We have been traveling to Palm Springs, California for 15 years and from the first time we went there we found one of our favorite restaurants in the entire country. Melvyn’s Restaurant which is located in the Ingleside Inn in downtown Palm Springs. We first heard about the restaurant on the television program, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”. melvyns to use interiorWe knew that we had to try it out which we did 15 years ago and since then we have been back dozens of times. Mel Haber, the owner is a tremendously good looking gentleman and has owned the restaurant for 41 years. The decor and menu has not changed in all those years. If something is perfect, then why change it? It is like stepping back in 1950 and 1960’s Hollywood ! Large photos of Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and all of the glorious Movie stars from the past are on the walls. Usually while we are dining there, we always see a celebrity or two. Brian Ellis, the Maitre d’ has been there since day one. He has won numerous awards as being one of the finest Maitre d’s in the country. He knows how to do things right and to make every guest have a most memorable dining experience. He has made friends with many of his thousands of diners including us. TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Hotel Pattee, Perry, Iowa – A Destination Unto Itself

hotel-pattee- good front shot Sometimes we want to go to a resort and spend some time whether it is in the mountains or seaside or desert and other times we want to go to a destination just to enjoy that particular destination. Earlier this year we stayed at the HOTEL PATTEE in Perry, Iowa which is more or less in the middle of Iowa. Perry is actually located about 35 miles northwest of Des Moines and has a population of about 7,000. The very historical HOTEL PATTEE was built in 1913 and the interior is from the Arts and Crafts movement of that era and it is still the same. The lobby and all the rest of the interior of the hotel brings you back when grandeur was what it was all about. pattee hotel jaySince the beginning of the HOTEL PATTEE the hotel has gone thru a few owners. Jay and Denise Hartz from St. Louis purchased the hotel in 2013 and have done a truly remarkable job. They really enjoy the hotel business and are extremely professional. It was named for David Jackson Pattee, the gentleman in whose honor the hotel was built, and for the Milwaukee Railroad which for over 100 years was the the main employer in Perry. The Diner takes you back to the era when the train was King! The Arrow Room, named for a Milwaukee passenger train is a recreation of an early 20th century railroad dining car, complete with coffered ceiling, wood paneling, and murals showing the countryside near Perry. The Challenger and Hiawatha Rooms, also named for Milwaukee trains are designed in the Arts and Crafts style frequently found in depot hotel restaurants and railroad hotel dining rooms. Their Inter-Urban Lounge, named for the electric trains that shuttled travelers back and forth between Perry and Des Moines through the early part of the 20th Century. The lounge is decorated in the style of the Midwest’s best known Arts and Crafts designer, Frank Lloyd Wright. Known as Prairie Style, Wright’s designs dot the Midwest. Photos of the Inter-Urban, Perry’s railroad history and the people who made the town line the walls. Relax and enjoy drinks while enjoying the nostalgia. They have live music on weekends. In addition they have a wonderful outdoor patio that is within the hotel grounds. They offer a large variety of places for weddings, anniversaries and all types of private parties. This is one of the most LGBT friendly hotels in the country. They offer many amenities including over 130 pieces of original art by more than 30 artists which are on display honoring noteworthy native sons and daughters of Iowa. It has two full-functioning lanes with automated scoring. EVERY member of their staff is extremely professional and friendly. The owners certainly have taught them well. Our favorite staff member, for his ultra professionalism was Josh Riviera, Front Desk Manager. But all of the staff was perfect both in the hotel as well as in the restaurant. Thank you to the owners, Jay and Denise Hartz for returning the historical HOTEL PATTEE to its original grandeur. You and your staff are to be commended for a wonderful job on making the hotel a 5 star stay for your guests. Whether staying just for a couple of days or a week or more, we guarantee that you will be in for a very special experience. In all of our travels from coast to coast, this is the most unusual and interesting hotel we have visited. TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Iowa City, Iowa, Part One

Iowa City Town Hall - Donald and Ray Iowa City has often been referred to as the “Athens of the Midwest” because of it’s rich cultural and educational offerings. Two of Iowa’s certified cultural and entertainment districts are positioned in the heart of Iowa City. The University of Iowa campus, intertwined with Downtown, showcases the Old Capitol Museum, the Pentacrest Museums and other cultural attractions throughout their community. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized Iowa City as the world’s third City of Literature joining Edinburgh, Scotland and Melbourne, Australia. It is THE only city of Literature in North America! That designation provides additional international luster to the community and serves to validate the area’s long history of nurturing the literary arts and those who appreciate them. Pound for pound, this area constitutes the most literate community in the world! Iowa City - Donald and RayNaturally we were very interested in visiting Iowa City and it really is a tremendous place! We were welcomed to the city by Joshua Schamberger, the President of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. In our travels from coast to coast, this gentleman was the most professional director of any Convention and Visitor’s Bureau that we have ever encountered. His assistant, Clarissa McPheron, Director of Creative Services at the CVB assisted in our scheduling and was extremely professional. Brown Street Inn Bed and Breakfast - Donald and RayOur first stop was to check into The Brown Street Inn Bed and Breakfast. It is owned by Mark Ruggeberg and Bob Brooks. These gentlemen do EVERYTHING the right way. While we were there we met other guests who had stayed there several times in the past. We can certainly understand that once you stay at their Inn that you would want to stay there again and again and again. The first morning when we were there we met two delightful guests from eastern Iowa who were celebrating their anniversary…. Linda and Henry Neuman, both attorneys from a city in Eastern Iowa. She was the first woman to serve as a member of the Iowa Supreme Court in it’s 150 year history. She and her attorney husband were extremely interesting to talk with over breakfast and both are full of stories of their past. We need more people like that! Congratulations on your Anniversary! Another couple staying at the B and B were Kirsten and Ross Smith from greater Indianapolis. Since we had just been to Indianapolis the month before we had a lot to talk about. That is just one of the many reasons why we love staying at a B and B is that you get to meet such wonderful, exciting and interesting people and many times we run in to them again in our travels. We have stayed in over 100 B and B’s and The Brown Street Inn is one of our very favorite ones. In Part Two of our travel columns on Iowa City we will tell you about the many things to do and see and the wonderful dining opportunities that the town has to offer. For a city this size it is really remarkable how much they have to offer. No wonder so many people from coast to coast love to visit Iowa City! TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Amazing Indianapolis Part Two

Indianapolis, Indiana The historical aspects of the city go way back to the early 1800’s. It is the largest city in Indiana, second largest city in the American Midwest and the 14th largest in the country The downtown’s main attraction is Monument Circle with shops and restaurants located on the streets around it and the famous Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the center which was built in the late 1890’s. We saw a live production of SKYLIGHT at the Theatre On The Square, www.tots.org starring Sarah McGee, Tyler Ostrander and Bill Simmons. We saw it on Broadway in New York City and this production was performed as perfect as on Broadway. Don and RayThe Cabaret, http://www.thecabaret.org/ at the Columbus Club, http://columbia-club.org/ is the premiere private city club in the city and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown on Monument Circle and was established in 1889. Broadway star, Joshua Henry had a one night sold out performance that we were thrilled to be a part of. His range of songs went from A to Z and the entire audience really appreciated him. The Indiana Historical Society is one of the country’s oldest and largest historical societies and describes itself as “Indiana’s Storyteller”. John A. Herbst is the President and C.E. O. and has done such a fantastic job. There is something here for everyone. They also have a Cole Porter Room with memorabilia plus a live performer who sings the music of Cole Porter. Donald and RayThey have many ‘hands on’ exhibits. This is one place that you do not want to miss! In addition they have a great Cafe located on the lower level that has the 2nd best Monte Cristo sandwiche that we have ever had coast to coast. They also have a wonderful Indiana LGBT Collective Initiative. Check out their website at: http://www.indianahistory.org/ This is a place where one could spend hours and hours and still not see everything. Thanks to John A. Herbst, this has become the ‘Crown Jewel’ in Indianapolis. For those who into sports, the city has the Indianapolis Colts national football team, the Indianapolis Pacers basketball team, They also have baseball, hockey, soccer and rugby. And of course the granddaddy of them all, NASCAR, http://www.nascar.com This year BE SURE to see one of our own be the FIRST OUT RACER!!!!! The city has numerous art galleries and museums including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, www.imamuseum.org/ and the Indianapolis of Contemporary Art, http://www.indymoca.org were two of our favorites, They have a wonderful zoo, www.indianapoliszoo.com You could spend a couple of weeks in beautiful, exciting and interesting Indianapolis and never see it all.
