The Dinah Celebrates 25 Years

Author: , January 23rd, 2015

The Dinah

Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend is turning twenty-five and taking the event to a new zenith.

A quarter-century ago, Mariah Hanson did more than just kick-start her Dinah. She also and most importantly launched what would become her enduring legacy to both the city of Palm Springs and the LGBT community.

From a small, one-night event at a Palm Springs museum with 1,500 participants twenty-five years ago, to booking lavish locations at deluxe hotels over five days of epic pool parties and world-class entertainment with some 15,000-plus attendees and major corporate sponsors today, Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend has evolved into one of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley’s largest tourism boosters and undisputed biggest lesbian event of its kind in the world.

The natural symbiosis shared by these two iconic LGBT Mecca has continuously been a match made in heaven. More than a tradition The Dinah Shore Weekend has over these past 25 years (and counting) become a Palm Springs institution and one of the city’s most popular spring attractions.

As one of the early pioneers, the Dinah has become one of Palm Spring staple events sharing the spotlight with the likes of the Coachella Music Festival, Stagecoach, The Palm Springs International Film Festival, the BNP Paribas Open Trophy, and the PGA and LPGA golf tournaments -all intrinsically linked to the famous desert community.

In the span of twenty five years The Dinah has cemented its status as not only an event the entertainment industry’s most elite go to but also as a trendsetting event that music industry insiders watch and jockey to book their artists’ performances.

It is the only acknowledged all-girl party that features such a phenomenal line-up of talent to ever to perform at a lesbian event. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Colbie Caillat, India Arie, The Pussycat Dolls, Kesha and more recently Iggy Azalea, are just a few examples of major recording artists that headlined the epic event while still “unknown” and then systematically went on to hit international superstardom.

While The Dinah has been spearheading music careers, it has, most importantly, also been transforming lives and making a difference in and for the LGBT community. Offering an unparalleled one-of-a-kind experience for myriads of women who come every year from all over the world to enjoy the freedom to be who they truly are without fearing the judgment of others, and gain, as well, a tremendous amount of self worth.

The event has also been serving as a platform to mobilize the LGBT community around humanitarian projects and social issues, famously partnering in previous years with a variety of activist associations and charity organizations such as GLAAD, HRC, NOH8, Love is Louder, Equality California, and The Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center among others.

The Dinah has certifiably come to represent an ever-growing movement that has crossed over to mainstream bringing more and more visibility to the lesbian community – one that had never existed before.

As the largest and biggest lesbian event in the world, The Dinah has been continuously delivering a spectacular slate of legendary headliners, rising pop stars and celebrities alike. And 2015 will be no different.

Now ready to soar to new heights, the 25th installment of The Dinah is already expected to be one of the major highlights of the 2015 Palm Springs festival season.

Already confirmed to headline the 25th Anniversary of the Dinah are international Billboard Top 40 superstars Meghan Trainor and Christina Perri; as well as pop music’s new “it” girls Bebe Rexha and Ivy Levan; and old school legends Crystal Waters and Rose Royce.

Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend is not just breaking grounds; it is making history!

And as the celebration of the milestone Silver Anniversary is already in full swing, past Dinah alumni are all proudly stepping in front of the camera to send in their best birthday wishes!

Las Vegas Dinah Shore Event Coming in Two Weeks

Author: , April 12th, 2013

Dinah Shore Las VegasDinah Shore’s not just in Palm Springs anymore – there is an offshoot event now in Las Vegas, and it starts on April 25. Edge Boston reports:

“Vegas has put a whole new fire under the Dinah,” said Dinah Vegas founder Sandy Sachs. “The energy, the food, the entertainment, gambling, hotels, nightclubs, gay clubs – it’s just incredible and super fun! For a lot of our crowd, who are a little older and more upscale, they are loving it! “For the past 22 years, Sachs had organized the annual Girl Bar Dinah Shore Weekend in Palm Springs, where the annual Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend is held. Eventually, she said, boredom set in. She began to wonder how many years they could keep going to the same place and trying to reinvent the party. She eventually decided to move her event to Las Vegas, a site she says suits her and her clients much better.

So what is there to do at the Dinah?

Sachs said that the daytime pool parties are among her favorite events, touting the fact that this year, she convinced Caesars to give them the huge Flamingo Pool, with its waterfalls and giant oasis, for the event. After splashing around in the pool all day on Saturday, guests will don their white gear for an Evening Under the Stars event, with showgirls, burlesque, world-famous DJs and dancing under the stars. The weekend will also feature a Sunday brunch, held from 2-10 p.m. at Diablo. Said Sachs, “You will not believe the size of the margaritas there! I’m actually scared for the girls!,” adding that the venue is right on the Strip, with indoor and outdoor seating, and a stage where choreographed burlesque numbers will be held. A Sunday afternoon “T-Dance” will follow at the Chateau Nightclub under the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas.

Las Vegas On the Rise for Gay Tourism

Author: , March 25th, 2013

Las Vegas Ad CampaignLas Vegas has always been a party town, but until recently, it was more of a straight party town. That’s all changing, as the Las Vegas Sun reports:

Since the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority began marketing to the LGBT community in the early 2000s, the city has stepped into the spotlight as one of that demographic’s premier travel destinations. And winning that patronage is important to Las Vegas: According to a 2009 study from Community Marketing Inc., the average household income for gay men and women is $81,500 — about 80 percent higher than that of the average U.S. household. Another recent study by the Canadian Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce found that LGBT travelers spent nearly twice as much per trip as their heterosexual counterparts and were twice as likely to go on vacation.

Things are changing rapidly. Consider:

The Dinah started a new Las Vegas event in 2012. Krave Massive, what may be the largest gay club in the world, opens in June in downtown Vegas. And the city recently ran a very gay friendly ad campaign.

Remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…

Dinah Shore BlogSan Diego Gay & Lesbian News Assistant Editor is immersing herself among thousands of women in Palm Springs this weekend at The Dinah. Check in daily to read the happenings. You might start a drinking game to coincide with all her name dropping.

PALM SPRINGS — It is Friday in this beautiful desert oasis and already it seems like there isn’t enough time in one day to take everything in. Thursday is now behind us but the memories are still thriving in my mind. We rolled into town yesterday about 4:30 pm and no matter how many times I come to this lovely desert town, I am always in awe with its beauty.

Picking up our press credentials at the Riviera Resort and Spa was an event in itself, with all the ladies checking in around us. The changes to the Riviera (made a couple years ago during a remodel) are still hard to believe. You almost have to see it to believe it. I must mention how incredibly nice the staff has been. They really look forward to us being here.
