Enjoy dinner, music and comedy on an 1880’s style paddle-wheeler

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

In the 1800’s, paddle-wheelers were described as floating palaces. Today, in Branson, Missouri, you can experience the joy of exploring the beautiful Table Rock Lake on a majestic paddle-wheeler named The Showboat Branson Belle while enjoying a multi-course dinner and a show!

After our dinner cruise aboard The Showboat Branson Belle, we spoke with Showboat Branson Belle host and comedian Christopher James.

Can you describe The Showboat Branson Belle in one sentence?

The showboat is the ultimate vacation experience, a cruise, a meal and a show all in one!

What is your role at The Showboat Branson Belle?

I am similar to a cruise director acting to welcome guest, make their experience as worry free as possible, introduce our amazing performers, and of course entertain.

What acts perform on The Showboat Branson Belle?

Cassandre is our featured female vocalist, the five member Showmen, dance group Rhythm, the Rockin’ Dockers band and of course me as host and comedian.

What do you love most about performing on The Showboat Branson Belle?

Every show is a new experience for me because I interact with the audience so much. No two cruises are ever the same.

In your opinion, why are Branson and its attractions so popular?

Variety! Branson truly does offer something for everyone. It has changed so much on the past few years and continues to evolve.

Our thoughts:

We enjoyed our dinner cruise aboard the $8 million Showboat Branson Belle. Whether we were enjoying the food, comedy, magic, music and dancing or roaming the decks for the 360 views of Table Rock Lake, our dinner cruise experience was unique, relaxing and entertaining.
Christopher James is the perfect host / emcee for the show, He seems to enjoy every second of his time on stage and interacting with the audience.

“This is how we do salad. Take that Olive Garden!” he boasted humorously as salads were served to dinner guests.

His “Yes No” audience participation game – somewhat like the Simon Says game of your childhood – had the audience both laughing and cheering.

Featured female vocalist Cassandré Faimon-Haygood is comfortable belting out tunes from “Downtown” and “Feelin’ Groovy” while wearing white, knee high go-go boots to joining with The Showmen for a selection of twenty-seven songs in nine minutes and even some Disney tunes.

The Rhythm clogging and dance group is known as The Fastest Feet West of the Mississippi.

Our meal included salad, dinner rolls, choice of beverage, choice of entrée and dessert.

We enjoyed our dinner cruise aboard The Showboat Branson Belle. If you are a fan of dinner theater entertainment or historic ship replicas, make sure you visit this Branson, Missouri tourist and local favorite.

Branson is located between Kansas City, St. Louis, Little Rock, Tulsa and Memphis. Unless you are driving you will need to fly directly into Branson or Springfield, Missouri.

FISK LIMOUSINES, has been serving the Branson and Springfield area for over 30 years and they are the best of the best. They will take care of all of your traveling needs in the area. There are literally dozens and dozens of motels and hotels in Branson and like any other tourist destination, it is always best to go during the week.

The surrounding area of Branson has a lot of lakes to enjoy however most people go to Branson for the LIVE SHOWS! and there are dozens of them ranging from cornball comedy acts to sensational Broadway types of production and individual headline stars. A few that we particularly enjoyed were:

RedRED: Tom Mullica’s Red Skelton Tribute. This show was one of the FUNNIEST comedy routines that we have seen in years! It is truly a laugh riot! Tom is so quick with his wit and plays to the audience fabulously. Each show is completely different since there are new audience members all the time.

He is one hell of an entertainer. His partner Stephen is absolutely hilarious with his dead pan humor. Even their precious puppy, Dolly is in the show. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!!! It is for sure, the funniest show in Branson! His website is

Elvis and UsJOSEPH HALL’S ELVIS “Rock ‘N’ Remember Tribute” It is an incredible full production show, featuring the greatest hits of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. You will think that the real Elvis is back!

Joseph does an incredible job! He was in the Top Ten of NBC’s American’s Got Talent. He has Elvis’s look and motions down perfectly! His website is: He does travel from coast to coast doing tours so if he is in your area, BE SURE and catch this very talented entertainer.

Christina and Shoji TabuchiTHE SHOJI TABUCHI SHOW. What is there NOT to like about this EXTREMELY TALLENTED entertainer? If you are lucky you will be there one of the nights that his wife Dorothy or daughter Christina are also performing. It is all ENTERTAINMENT! He has almost as many sequined outfits as Liberace had! He is on top of everything and his theatre is beautiful.

One HAS TO visit the restrooms in his theatre. They are always on the top ten restrooms list in the country. You can see photos of them on line. The men’s restroom even has a pool table in it and the lady’s restroom has crystal chandeliers. No trip to Branson is not completed until you see this show. It has everything, glitz, glamour, great music with a wonderful back up band. His daughter, Christina has a great CD out , “THE ORIGINALS” His website is:

DOLLY PARTON’S DIXIE STAMPEDE is a dinner show. They serve a complete dinner consisting of a whole Rotisserie chicken, hickory smoked barbeque pork loin, corn on the cob, baked potato, creamy vegetable soup, home made biscuit and an apple tart for dessert. If you want to eat with flatware you will need to bring your own, otherwise everybody eats with their hands. And we are not kidding! Knowing this in advance, we brought our own Grande Baroque Sterling Silver flatware and our own white linen napkins. You dine while you are watching the show where cowboys, Indians and all sorts of rodeo clowns, Ostriches, pigs and everybody has a good time. Dolly does this right! The pre-show outside is truly outstanding. Their website is:

Hooray for HollywoodThere are two fabulous shows that we saw at the King’s Castle Theatre, First we saw HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD which was a Hollywood spectacular featuring songs from Hollywood’s greatest films. It REALLY had all the glitz and glamour that one would ever want. The entire cast did a tremendous job. Do not miss this show.

New Jersey NightsAlso at the King’s Castle Theatre was the NEW JERSEY NIGHTS, the smash hit tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Season. The audience really appreciated this show and sometime even sang along with the singers. The cast did a remarkable job and everyone left wanting MORE!

Branson HAS changed in the past couple of years and for the good! They just HAD to re-invent themselves as Las Vegas has had to do. It is now not just all about God and Country however can you actually believe they still have a theatre called God and Country there? Younger travelers are now coming to Branson.

Our very favorite restaurant in Branson was FLORENTINA’S Ristorante Italiano. Their website is: They had some of the finest Italian food around. It is located at 2690 Green Mountain Drive just off the “strip” in Branson. Be SURE and dine there when visiting Branson.

Donald and Ray

Like Las Vegas, Branson in high tourist season can get very crowded with cars. Fortunately someone in the city devised a couple of alternative routes to avoid the main strip and by using these Yellow and Red routes you can get around very quickly. We want to thank the Branson Convention & Visitor’s Bureau for their assistance in writing our column and we also want to give a big thanks to Patrick McCoy at the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre and to “Mark S”.

Always remember to have fun when traveling, meet new people and talk to everyone!
