Macau Tower - Apple Maps

From Apple Maps

Looking for high adventure, unique architecture and dramatic views? EDGE Contributor Richard Frisbie traveled to four countries on three continents to find enough death-defying stunts to satisfy the most jaded thrill-seekers. For everyone else, the breath-taking views and award-winning architecture he discovers are worth the price of admission.

Macau Tower: Macau is a former Portuguese colony on the South China Sea that is now a special administrative region (SAR) of China, similar to Hong Kong. As one of the most visited gambling destinations in the world, some say Macau trumps Vegas! But money is not the only currency when gambling in Macau. You can also take a leap at the highest freefall in the world.

When it was built more than a decade ago, Macau Tower was one of the ten tallest freestanding buildings in the world. Rising from its needle base to the flying saucer-style, glass-enclosed observation deck at the top, the tower offers spectacular day and nighttime views of the surrounding city. On a clear day you can see all the way to Hong Kong — 50 miles away.

Alberta: Thousands Fill Central Edmonton for Gay Pride

Author: , June 13th, 2011

Edmonton Gay PrideThousands of people descended on downtown Edmonton Saturday afternoon for the annual Pride Parade, sending our city’s Pride Week into high-gear.

Among those who lined the parade route, and watched shirtless men dance atop some of the colourful floats that passed by, were parents and their young children.

“I think it’s amazing. They’re getting taught tolerance which is really important,” said parade-goer, Christina Kruszewski. “I know a lot of my friends’ parents who wouldn’t let them come this year because they aren’t comfortable with this, but these kids are being taught it’s ok.”

Alberta’s 13th Annual Fairy Tales Queer Film Fest Begins May 26th

Author: , May 5th, 2011

La BoyitaThe programming of this year’s Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival reflects the fact it has hit its teen years.

No, it hasn’t suddenly become sullen and uncommunicative. But, at 13, Alberta’s largest gay and lesbian film festival is showing signs that it has entered that hormone-laden, coming-of-age stage of adolescence, says festival director Jessica Dollard.

“It’s full of drama, it’s full of sexual angst, it’s full of attitude,” says Dollard. “It’s full of a vibrance, yet a vulnerability and tenderness. It’s not a bad teenager, though. It still has a healthy reverence for the wisdom that comes with aging and a reverence for those who have paved the way before us and got us to where we are now and have been integral in us gaining the rights we have today.”

Calgary: Q Festival Tonight at 8 PM

Author: , March 5th, 2011

Q Festival, CalgaryThe diversity and inclusiveness that puts Calgary firmly on the path to greatness as a city gets added richness on Saturday with the city’s first Queer Arts & Culture Festival — or Q the Arts, for short. The festival, spearheaded by the Fairy Tales Presentation Society in conjunction with Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre, features 11 artists presenting work in visual art, theatre, music, dance and spoken word.

“The (Fairy Tales) board has always been very interested in moving into other art forms to become a full cultural festival,” says Jessica Dollard, who took over as the society’s programming and producing director two years ago. “It took 13 years to build the (Fairy Tales) film festival to where it is — and now we’re at a point where not only do I feel the city is ready, but I also feel the organization is ready for more forms of expression and voices, more artists.”

Not all those taking part in the festival are members of the LGBTTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and questioning) community, says one of four Q the Arts programming curators, Kris Kelly.
