Women's Week In Provincetown

Women's Week In Provincetown Summer may be officially ending but the fun is just beginning in Provincetown. The historically gay and lesbian mecca on the tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, has enjoyed a beautiful and rainbow-festooned summer, including appearances from legendary LGBT performers, and even a visit by Hillary Clinton and Cher. And now it’s gearing up for even more femme-forward festivities! Aside from the general pleasure of strolling Commercial Street hand-in-hand with your love, there are some big events to put in your calendar. The 32nd Annual Women’s Week In Provincetown is now the longest-running women’s cultural festival in the country. This year the Festival runs from October 7 through October 16. Mary Lambert and Our Lady J round up the lineup of superstars who will perform in a benefit concert for Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund, which aims to alleviate LGBT youth homelessness. The closing night concert will be followed by an exclusive Rainbow Party and is one of several events produced by the Women Innkeepers of Provincetown. The entire Women’s Week will be a star-studded celebration of culture and community with Kate Clinton, Lily Tomlin, Karen Williams, Vickie Shaw, Julie Goldman, Suzanne Westenhoefer, Poppy Champlin, Jennie McNulty, Cameron Esposito, Rhea Butcher, Cris Williamson, Susan Werner, Suede, Zoe Lewis, Laura Zucker, and more performing. Sporty dykes are not left out, with events that include pickup basketball, an annual golf tournament, and Kate Clinton’s always-riotous Touch Football Classic.

Gregos Street Art in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – Globetrotter Girls

Williamsburg art My last week in New York (for now) rolled around, and so I decided to take some time off and not hide behind my laptop the whole time, which is what I had done pretty much all month. Instead, I made time to hang out with friends and enjoyed a few more of my favorite summer activities in New York – cycling, sunset picnics, food markets and al fresco dinners (on a rooftop no less!). This year, I also got to kayak on the East River, something I’d been wanting to do for the past two summers. It was just as awesome as I expected it to be, and was a good reminder that I need to get into a kayak more often (the last time I was in a kayak was in May in Austin). And I went on a street art walk in Williamsburg, hunting down some new graffiti pieces and murals, which I love doing, no matter if I’m in New York or in Bangkok or Buenos Aires. A highlight of that day was stumbling upon a Gregos face – exactly a month after stumbling upon one in Berlin.

Chalk it Up – Sacramento

Chalk it Up - Giraffe Fremont Park in Sacramento is playing host this weekend to a cool art event – Chalk it Up brings together a bunch of chalk artists to create their masterpieces, and runs for the full three day weekend. Chalk it UpWe stopped by yesterday to check it out. About half the art pieces were finished, and it was fascinating to see the artists working on the others, some from mental pictures, some from props, and some from photos laid out on a grid. This is a cool little community park in an up and coming part of Sactown, with not one but two local coffee chains on the park – Naked Coffee has a cool little retro cafe on the southwestern corner, while Insidght just opened on the ground floor of the gorgeous new eco friendly 16 Powerhouse Apartments on the East Side. You can also stop into Magpie or Hot Italian for lunch. The park is filled with vendors too – our fave? Driftwoods Clothing, which does shirts for many of Sacramento’s diverse little neighborhoods. If you are in the Sacramento area and have time today, stop by and see this festival before it ends. Some of our favorite art is below.

Gulf Country, Florida – Globetrotter Girls

Gulf Country, Florida Everybody talks about the nightlife in Miami, Disneyworld in Orlando, the natural beauty of the Keys. What about Florida’s gulf coast though? That’s a side of the sunshine state that falls mainly under the radar, despite offering just as many exciting adventures as Florida’s Atlantic coastline has. And Gulf County isn’t just a summer destination: the prime season here is September through March. So if you’re thinking about taking a trip to Florida, why not consider the Gulf Coast? 244 miles of coastline I bet you didn’t know that Gulf County has 244 miles of glorious coastline along the Florida panhandle. What’s different from other parts of Florida’s coast? Gulf County has remained its nature – there, you don’t find an aggressive invasion of nature like in Miami for example, where barely any nature is left. Instead of man-made, artificial beaches, you can still experience true nature, tranquility and the unspoiled ocean. The stunningly beautiful Cape San Blas is home to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, which was named the best beach in America a few years ago. Water of all kinds One thing that makes Gulf County special is that it has access to several bodies of water: the Gulf of Mexico of course, the saltwater of St Joseph Bay, the Gulf County Canal, Apalachicola Bay and river basin, Indian Pass Lagoon, and the freshwater of Chipola River and the Dead Lakes. These waters are all connected and give nature lovers access to untouched nature and wildlife – bird watching, fishing, hiking the nature trails and ecotouring is possible in all of those places.

Summer in New York City – Globetrotter Girls

New York City - Dani This past week was all about Central Park! I was staying a couple of blocks away from New York’s largest (and most famous) park, and so I ended up there for one reason or another every single day. There were runs in the park (it was Central Park, by the way, where I became a serious runner and finished my first race in 2010), several writing sessions on a blanket in the sun (those are the times when I love being a freelancer), a picnic and tour of the park which I shared on Snapchat (my ID is mariposa2711) and, pictured above, an epic sunset session with cheese and wine, a game of boule and a catch-up with my fellow travel bloggers Caroline and Kristin. As much as I love Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s answer to Central Park, close to which I’m usually staying, the majestic feel of Central Park is just unrivaled.

Homestead at 3218 – Gay Retreat in Crawford, Texas

Homestead at 3218 Periodically we’ll feature one of our properties here to let our readers know about some great gay friendly places to stay: The Homestead at 3218 is a clothing-optional members-only retreat exclusively for gay & bi men located on a private cattle ranch in rural Crawford, Texas, near Waco. Mark Mattlage and Rob Snowden, a gay couple for 36 years and married since February 2014, opened this venue on May 20, 2016. The first phase of the retreat covers about two acres and features a two-story Pool House containing five fully-furnished rooms with private baths and full kitchens; an 18′ x 36′ heated swimming pool; free onsite parking; and a Rec Center. The latter is where all new and returning members check-in at the Reception Desk each time they visit. The building provides members with a video and game lounge; drink vending machine; clothes lockers; personal items lockers; a steam room; large, open shower room and restroom facilities; a bunk room with six roll away beds and lockers; seven hostel-style sleeping cubicles; and an outdoor patio surrounded by a high-fence. Other retreat amenities include free WiFi and select DIRECTV channels in the suites. The first floor Pool House suites are wheelchair-accessible and accept small dogs 25 lbs. and under. The retreat’s second phase, scheduled for completion later this year, will encompass an additional three acres accommodating about fifteen RV/travel trailer pad sites with utility connections and a central waste dump station and approximately ten primitive camp sites. It also includes transforming an existing farm tool shed into a bar & grill serving three meals daily. Mattlage and Snowden started planning their retreat after studying gay get-away venues – both clothing-optional and not – across North America. They decided since nothing quite like their envisioned venue existed in Texas that they’d create it on a portion of the 187-acre ranch they own in the Central Texas area near Waco. This married couple plans to add more member amenities beyond those offered in the first two phases of The Homestead at 3218’s development.

Fort Lauderdale is for Gay Beach Lovers

Gay Beach Lovers If Florida’s a family of blockbuster travel destinations – with Miami and Orlando as the energetic kids – Fort Lauderdale’s like the cool older brother. The one who doesn’t need to raise his voice to command your attention. Located on the state’s east coast a 38-minute drive from Miami, and three hours from Orlando, this city of 172,000 is the perfect foil to both. It’s less intense and touristy than its neighbors, while sharing their year-round temperate weather. It’s almost perpetually sunny, and the sea is warm in summer and refreshing through winter. But Fort Lauderdale’s best quality sets it apart from the pack: it’s found in Broward County, the most progressive (read: gayest) of all Floridian counties. It’s firmly Democratic in a region where Republicans reign supreme and, according to the US census, has the second highest proportion of LGBTI residents in America. Furthermore, Greater Fort Lauderdale has long been recognized for its efforts to attract gay and lesbian tourists, and in recent years, trans travelers specifically. Perfect for gay beach lovers.
