Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – The Globetrotter Guys

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve - The Globetrotter Guys

If you are travelling to South Africa you can’t leave until you have been on a safari! It is one of the most incredible, exciting and unique experiences you can have, and South Africa has some of the best safaris in the world!

When we made our plans to return to South Africa, we knew we couldn’t be here for 3 months and not revisit a safari.

We first visited 4 years ago and had an incredible experience in Kruger National Park, but this time around our plans meant we were sticking near Cape Town and the Garden Route.

This meant that we needed to find the best safari near Cape Town. It was also incredibly important to us that we went on an authentic safari that had its ethos in the right place when it comes to conservation. After our experience at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve we are certain that we may have found the best safari near Cape Town!

Gay Oudtshoorn – The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Oudtshoorn - The Globetrotter Guys

Oudtshoorn is one of our favourite stops along the garden route of South Africa. It is a little bit out of the way, but 100% worth the drive to get there!

Oudtshoorn is a small town one-hour north of George (the nearest airport) or 4.5 hours by car from Cape Town.

The scenery here is incredible and you are constantly surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife – Oudtshoorn is home to the world’s largest ostrich population after all.

On top of that, the weather is excellent all year round, and there are many fun and adventurous things to do in gay Oudtshoorn.

We have visited Oudtshoorn twice now and would happily go back a third time. It’s also a place where local South Africans take their holidays which is a good indicator!

We recommend spending 2-3 nights in Oudtshoorn depending on how much time you have. In 2 nights, you will be able to do 4 out of our 5 top things to do in Oudtshoorn and with 3 you can tick them all off as well as taking some down time.

Gay Knysna, South Africa – The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Knysna - The Globetrotter Guys

We had no plans to go to Knysna, no idea what to do in Knysna and no idea what to expect. A week later, following many adventures, we were completely sold!

Knysna is a picturesque coastal town and a key destination on the famed Garden Route of South Africa. Think dramatic coastlines, mountains, forests, cliffs and sunsets to die for!

Not only that, there are so many things to do in Knysna. Our days were jam packed, yet after a week there were still more activities we could have done.

Knysna Hike and Bike

We spent a total of 8 nights in and around Knysna but if you are short on time this is the perfect activity.

We went on the walking food and drink tour and loved it. We always find that if you only have one or two nights somewhere, deciding on places to eat can be tricky – with this tour we went to seven places in a few hours!

South Africa Gay Life – The Globetrotter Guys

South Africa Gay Life - The Globetrotter Guys

South Africa is one of the most incredible places we have ever visited. We are always looking to travel to gay friendly destinations that offer both luxury and adventure and South Africa ticks all these boxes.

Some of you reading may find it surprising that South Africa is considered to be a gay friendly destination. Speaking from our own experience, we had no idea until we travelled here back in 2015. The same view seems to be true for many of you that have taken part in polls we have run on social media.

Whilst our experience here as tourists has been great, we know that this is not always the case for the local LGBT community. And so during our three months in South Africa, we made it our mission to find out what South Africa Gay Life is really like as a local LGBT person.

And who better to speak to than Mr Gay South Africa 2019 himself, Chris Emmanuel! We were lucky enough to meet with Chris during our stay in Knysna. Here is what he has to say about gay South Africa:

Hi Chris! Please introduce yourself to our readers, and of course tell us all about the Mr Gay World Competition, how you came to be Mr Gay South Africa, and what you hope to achieve for the country.

Hi everyone! I’m Chris Emmanuel, the recently crowned Mr Gay South Africa 2019.

I’m a ripe 42 years old and it was with total surprise that I won by public participation voting and became the new Mr Gay South Africa. Following being crowned Mr Gay South Africa, I am setting a goal of raising over R1 million ($70,000) for issues and charities.

Here in South Africa, we are very lucky to have an incredible constitution that strongly protects gay rights and marriage.

South Africa Gay Tours – The Globetrotter Guys

South Africa Gay Tours - The Globetrotter Guys

South Africa has to be one of our all-time favorite destinations. In fact if you ask Sion, he will probably say it is his favorite place in the world. Why? Quite simply, we have yet to find another place that offers everything South Africa does.

You have modern cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg. There is a multitude of stunning beaches stretching all the way along the coast (Fact: Cape Towns beaches have been named some of the best in the world, AND Cape Town has 2 gay beaches). The scenery is just incredible, with forests, oceans and mountains stretching for miles. Of course, there is the wildlife, with the opportunity of spotting the Big 5, either in a private reserve or a National Park. And to top it all off, the food and wine is some of the best we have ever eaten and drank, at some of the lowest prices too.

With so much to see and do, one of the best ways to make the most of this incredible destination is to join a fully escorted, organised tour, especially if you are short on time. And being in a gay-friendly destination, why not join a gay tour of South Africa, ensuring that you will end up travelling with like minded people.

LGBTQ Vacation: South Africa Gay Tours

During our time in Cape Town, we were fortunate to connect with Jakes Conradie, founder and CEO of Amatungulu Tours. Amatungulu Tours has a specific gay division, LGBTQ Vacation. We partnered with Jakes and were able to experience part of his product and find out more about this gay-owned tour operator.

Cape Town Gay Pride – The Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town Gay Pride - The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Pride in Cape Town was not what we expected at all! It really is quite unique compared to many of the other gay pride events we have been to and we highly recommend you add it to your pride bucket-list.

We found Cape Town Pride to be so unique because of the people. We have never seen such a diverse and inclusive crowd of people at a pride festival! Most pride festivals we have been to have been 95% men (which of course is nice for us!), however this is not the case for Cape Town gay pride at all.

There is an even spread across all genders, age, sexuality and race – everyone is well represented which of course is what pride is about. We spoke with the Festival Director of Pride, Matthew Van As and he explained that there is a common misconception that Cape Town Pride is going to be just a festival full of the stereotypical white male crowd – the reality is completely different and as a result Cape Town Pride had a very diverse and local feel to it!

Lets take a look at all you need to know about Cape Town Gay Pride and let us convince you to get yourself booked for next year!

Finding the Miami Gay Beach – The Globetrotter Guys

Miami Gay Beach - The Globetrotter Guys

Miami is exactly like what you will have seen on the T.V. and in films! It’s a trendy, vibrant and very cool beach destination. Miami has been a gay hotspot for many years with gay bars, gay beaches, gay events such as the winter party and a large gay population – we can definitely see the attraction to living and visiting here.

We came to Miami looking to relax before we went on an Atlantis gay cruise (check out ‘What is a gay Atlantis cruise really like…’) and so headed straight for the gay beach in Miami. There are actually two ‘official’ gay beaches in Miami and if that’s what you are looking for, you have come to the right place!

Sometimes when you head to a destination, finding the ‘gay beach’ can be a challenge, however all the gay beaches in Miami are very easy to find. Here is how to find each of them:

12th Street Gay Beach, Miami
South Beach Miami is where the majority of the gay nightlife can be found, so it should come as no surprise that this is where you will find the most popular gay beach in Miami.

The area is very easy to navigate. Streets are numbered running east to west and start at 1st Street at the south end of South Beach and increase in number as you head north.

Gay Thailand Like a Local – The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Thailand Like a Local - The Globetrotter Guys

We have been to Thailand many times and have had nothing but great experiences. Thailand has so much to offer from the crazy capital city of Bangkok, to the jungles of Chiang Mai and the idyllic beaches you will find on the islands in the south, including the island of Koh Phangan, where the world famous Full Moon Party is held every month.

Like most countries, we know we are in a privileged position as a tourist so we wanted to interview an LGBT local to get a more in depth insight as to what it’s really like to be LGBT in Thailand. We got in contact with Bud who was willing to share his experience, read more below:

Hi Bud! Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi! My name is Bud Jungsaitakul. I am a middle aged gay professional and a world traveler from Thailand. I work as a senior operations manager at a large multinational company. I am a Thai National, MBA graduate and I live in Bangkok.

Thanks, so tell us, what is the stereotypical view of a local from Thailand towards someone who is LGBT (either local or tourist – is there a difference)?

Thailand is generally very tolerant towards the LGBT community and is probably the most gay friendly country in Asia.

The LGBT community has been visible in Thai culture for a very long time. Stereotypical views towards gay men in particular is that they are mostly feminine and camp.

Cabo With Kids – 2TravelDads

Cabo With Kids - 2TravelDads

We’ve been to Cabo with kids load of times, like, we’ve spent the equivalent of three months in Cabo as a family. You could say it’s our favorite family destination in Mexico. Since we’ve done it so much, we’ve decided it’s time we share our best tips for visiting Cabo with kids.

I’ll say this right away, Cabo with kids is mostly about relaxation and swimming vs digging into Mexican culture and nature. There are lots of opportunities for that, but Cabo San Lucas really has built itself into a luxury destination more than adventure. If you’re looking for adventure, check out our articles about Quintana Roo and touring the Yucatan Peninsula.

Locale and getting to Cabo San Lucas

For those traveling from the west coast, getting to Cabo San Lucas is pretty easy. There are direct flights from Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Diego. Denver and Dallas also offer direct flights, so know that even east coasters should be able to find a good flight. When flying into Cabo, the airport is SJD (San Jose del Cabo), Los Cabos International Airport. The airport is actually quite nice now (thanks Hurricane O’dele) and as long as you arrive early in the day or in the early evening, customs is pretty fast and smooth.

Gay Philippines: Local Gay Stories – The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Philippines

In 2018 we visited the Philippines for our honeymoon and fell in love with the country. From a tourist perspective, as a gay couple in the Philippines we had no problems at all. However, we are always interested to learn about what it is like to be LGBT in a country from a local perspective and not through a rose tinted tourist lens.

This is why we got in contact with Brix, a Filipino local to learn more about what it is like to be gay in the Philippines. Check out his interview below!

Hi Brix, please introduce yourself to our readers.

Thank for the opportunity to share a bit of my life experience and insights on LGBTQ travel in the Philippines and my hometown. My name is Ruel Perez, my friends call me Brix. I may look young but I am 30 years old. I used to work in tourism & hospitality and trading in different parts of the world. After traveling around 30 countries I came back to my town, built a farmhouse and became a gardener. I am currently running for town Mayor to fight against corruption and raise awareness for LGBTQ rights in the Philippines.
