Cape Town’s Gay Beach – Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town's Gay Beach - Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town has so much to offer including some absolutely stunning beaches. In fact, some of the beaches in Cape Town have been ranked among the best in the world!

With so many beaches to choose from, and with Cape Town being a very popular gay travel destination (check out our complete gay guide to Cape Town here), it’s no surprise that there are now a couple of unofficial ‘gay beaches’ in Cape Town!

We say unofficial, because unlike the gay beach in Miami, you won’t find huge pride flags lining the beach. There is nothing too obvious to let you know you have found one of the gay beaches. Here you need to know in advance where the gay beaches are in Cape Town else you would never spot them!

A lot of people ask why have a ‘gay beach’, what’s the point? But for us we view it the same as a gay bar. Because it is labelled as a ‘gay beach’ it’s a place where you can feel reassured and comfortable to be affectionate with your partner, wear those tiny speedos that you might feel self-conscious in elsewhere and just be a little more at ease.

There are two gay beaches in Cape Town, Clifton 3 and Sandy Bay. Here is everything you need to know including how to find these gay beaches!

Cape Town Gay Bars – The Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town Gay Bars - The Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town may be a lot smaller than other cities in South Africa, like Johannesburg, but when it comes to gay bars Cape Town is a winner!

You might immediately Google ‘Cape Town Gay Bars’ when you arrive, but what you should also know is that Cape Town as a whole is very gay friendly – something which we found very true during Cape Town Pride.

This means that a lot of bars that aren’t ‘officially gay bars’ in Cape Town will still have a very mixed and diverse crowd. This is especially true if you head to the touristy bars on Long Street.

That being said, when it comes to gay bars in Cape Town, you will be pleased to know that there is a good selection of options! Take a look at our up to date list below and let us know where you end up!

Crew Bar Cape Town

If you want to see the hottest bar staff in Cape Town, Crew Bar will leave you with your mouth wide open. This is one of the best-known gay bars in Cape Town and has recently been refurbished.

Crew Bar has two dance floors, weekly themed nights and is open every night of the week.

Queer Cape Town – Travel Pulse

It goes without saying that Cape Town is probably the queerest city in Africa, but I’d argue that it’s one of the top cities for LGBTQ travelers anywhere on the planet. This thriving metropolis is blessed with an almost embarrassing array of natural beauty, and the city’s progressive attitude is positively refreshing.

Enver Duminy, CEO, Cape Town Tourism, attributes the city’s special nature to several factors:

“LGBTQIA people in South Africa have the same rights as non-LGBTQIA people,” he said. “This is enshrined in our Constitution, which was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the fifth country in the world, but first in Africa, to legalize same-sex marriage, child adoption and surrogacy treatments.”

“Plus, there’s so much for everyone in queer Cape Town, from adventure travel to enjoying the best restaurants and wines. We have won numerous accolades, including breaking a record by being voted ‘Greatest City in the World’ for the sixth consecutive time in the annual Telegraph Travel Awards. We have also been voted ‘The World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination’ for 2018 in the World Travel Awards, reflecting the city’s capacity to delight our visitors.”

Duminy is quick to list the many attractions that make his city such a bucket list destination.

Gay Friendly Seychelles – The Gay UK

Gay Friendly Seychelles - pixabay

When you think of dream beach getaways and idyllic honeymoon destinations there are a few locations that spring to mind. You might consider the Caribbean, plan to bounce over to Bermuda, or maybe even the Maldives. Unfortunately, the sad truth is all those countries still class being gay as a criminal act. So there’s one clear winner when it comes to the best place to go for a gay beach vacation, the Seychelles aka the GAYchelles!

In May 2016, the Seychelles Parliament voted to amend Section 151 of their Penal Code that named sodomy a felony that was punishable with up to 14 years in prison. While the news wasn’t especially well-received by religious leaders, it was a landmark decision that gives gay travel enthusiasts added confidence in visiting the stunning 115-island country off the East African coast, making it one of the few African countries to decriminalize the gays.

With male-male intercourse now legal (lesbian sex was always fine apparently), the gay friendly Seychelles have even legalised same-sex marriage, and gay residents are able to legally adopt children as a couple. That being said, the predominantly Catholic country is still fairly conservative, operating a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy to all visitors, but with any hostility directed more towards locals than tourists.

Cape Town Gay Pride – The Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town Gay Pride - The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Pride in Cape Town was not what we expected at all! It really is quite unique compared to many of the other gay pride events we have been to and we highly recommend you add it to your pride bucket-list.

We found Cape Town Pride to be so unique because of the people. We have never seen such a diverse and inclusive crowd of people at a pride festival! Most pride festivals we have been to have been 95% men (which of course is nice for us!), however this is not the case for Cape Town gay pride at all.

There is an even spread across all genders, age, sexuality and race – everyone is well represented which of course is what pride is about. We spoke with the Festival Director of Pride, Matthew Van As and he explained that there is a common misconception that Cape Town Pride is going to be just a festival full of the stereotypical white male crowd – the reality is completely different and as a result Cape Town Pride had a very diverse and local feel to it!

Lets take a look at all you need to know about Cape Town Gay Pride and let us convince you to get yourself booked for next year!

Magical Morocco – Once Upon a Journey

Magical Morocco - Once Upon a Journey

Morocco might be the most photogenic country we’ve visited so far. Okay, many countries come close (such as Mongolia and Myanmar – maybe it’s countries that start with an M-kinda thing?), but Morocco is incredibly magical (another M-word!).

Sorting out a collection for this photo gallery was incredibly hard, which is why we selected more than just a few.

Most Gay Friendly Muslim Countries – Keep Calm and Wander

Most Gay Friendly Muslim Countries - The Nomadic Boys

Being openly gay in the Arab world is certainly not an easy feat! If it doesn’t land you a jail sentence or even a death penalty, the huge stigma attached to it will likely compromise your job prospects, alienate your family, or worse, make you the target of some pretty nasty homophobic violent crimes.

We have travelled extensively around the Middle East as a gay couple and overall had a positive experience. For example, we climbed the world’s tallest building in Dubai, got lost in the rich culture of Jerusalem, wondered around the souks of Tunis, visited stunning mosques in Abu Dhabi and even found a few gay clubs in Beirut. Of course we were always cautious to avoid any public displays of affection and only booked a double bed in hotels we were certain are gay friendly.

In this article, we’ve set out the 5 most gay friendly Arab countries based on our first hand experience and research. To be clear, this relates to the 22 Arab countries around the Middle East and North Africa, which are also member states of the Arab League. They are: Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the Comoro Islands, Iraq, Djibouti, and the United Arab Emirates. This does not include Israel, Turkey and Iran.

The point of this article is to show that outside of the pink comfort zone of the gay friendly countries of the world, there also exist pockets of LGBTQ friendly destinations, even in the more unlikely of places, like in the Arab world!

Ethiopia in Pictures – Once Upon a Journey

Ethiopia - Flamingoes - Once Upon a Journey

Three weeks, zero wifi connection, a lot of stunning landscapes, extreme highs (literally and figuratively) and lows and captivating cultural experiences: our Ethiopia trip was everything. From the capital, Addis Ababa, we travel south and to see thousands of flamingos in Abijatta-Shalla National Park, the Oromia Region.

After that, we fly to Gonder and travel to Debark to start our Simien Mountains trekking! The “Roof of Africa” lies in the Ethiopian Highlands. Our trekking takes us up to an altitude of 3900 meters above sea level.

We see the famous gelada baboons and sleep in tents under incredible starry night skies. We relax at Tim & Kim village at Lake Tana and we experience Ethiopian Christmas – Gena – in Gonder. Let us take you on a visual journey, this is our Ethiopia gallery!

Walk the Kasbah – Keep Calm and Wander

Walk the Kasbah - Keep Calm and Wander

I always thought that the likes of Paris or Venice were the world’s greatest destinations for avid tourists like me. But like other travelers who happen to evolve with time and finally find their nerves agreeing on visiting a relatively cheaper and distant destination, I found my solace in traveling to Tangier.

Tangier – the city where William Burroughs, Henri Matisse and the rest of the notable personalities found their unsung inspiration – turned out to be a source of rejuvenation for me also.

I was soothed by the fact that Tangier is comparable to New Orleans in terms of music playing everywhere, to Paris in terms of the rampant love and freedom on the streets, and Venice in terms of the culturally absorbed architecture. In my two-day stay here, my thirst of wandering freely on the streets in Tangier was quenched.
