The Wizards of Winter
Time Travel Back To A 70s and 80s Prog Rock Holiday

By Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong

Going to The Wizards of Winter concert is like stepping into a time machine to travel back to a 1970s or 1980s Prog Rock holiday concert. Cofounder and music director Scott Kelly has assembled a team that is perfectly fit to take audiences on that journey. The show is part Transiberian Orchestra, part Meatloaf, and part Pat Benatar with laser lights, snow falling on stage and too many duelling and harmonizing lead guitar solos to count.

“You can feel it in the audiences that come to our shows. They range from eight to 80. We try to create music that has the pageantry of the late-70s, early-’80s rock shows and present ourselves accordingly,” cofounder and music director Scott Kelly posted on their website.

Lead guitarist Fred Gorhau often employs a Brian May style while coiffed and dressed like a hatless Slash.

The Narrator, Tony Gaynor, shares a version of the gospel / nativity story between songs accompanied by flutes, violins, four keyboards, two guitars, a bass guitar, drums, four female vocalists, two male lead vocalists, and a saxophone.

Songs ranged from standards such as “O Holy Night” to a song that sounded strangely like Brian Setzer’s Stray “Cat Strut.”

The Wizards of Winter call their holiday rock opera “Tales Beneath a Northern Star” which takes the audience on a “musical journey inside a snow globe in search of the true meaning of Christmas.” That’s the clearest description I can give you.

According to their website, “Tales Beneath a Northern Star” is based around the music of their self titled CD and their albums ” The Magic of WInter” and ” A Christmas Dream.”

We were invited to see the “Tales Beneath a Northern Star” concert at The King Center for Performing Arts.

The Wizards of Winter are not The Transiberian Orchestra, but they never meant to be.

Old Florida Vacation Rental Homes – Short Term Vacation Rentals Near Sebastian

Short Term Vacation Rentals Near Sebastian

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

Married couple Glenn Powell and Scott Kimberly were vacationing in Florida when a friend drove them to the small, historic town of Roseland just outside of Sebastian. They saw a property that was once owned by the Goodrich family – an iconic name in the rubber industry. Glenn and Scott fell in love with the riverfront compound and were soon making plans to leave their Georgia home to embrace the old Florida way of life…but with modern amenities!

“We had a vision in our minds of what Florida should be like. We had visited the big cities where everything was built up in every available space and that just wasn’t Florida to us. When we found this property on the riverfront, with a view of the railroad bridge, ancient oak trees covered in Spanish moss, fruit trees and the 1920s era architecture, we felt like we were in the Florida we had always envisioned,” Glenn told us.

We asked Scott what atmosphere or vibe they want their guests to experience.

“This place is so relaxing, so different from other Florida experiences, that we just hope our guests come and embrace the peace and tranquility here. Just embrace it and enjoy it,” he said.

Roseland is a charming town where many streets are still unpaved. You will even find baskets of mangoes in residents’ yards beside signs reading “free mangoes.”

Henry Flagler’s railroad brought a depot and water tower to Roseland in the 1890s. Some of the structures date back to the early 1900s including the Roseland Community Center which is a short stroll from Glenn and Scott’s rentals along a sandy road.

Somehow, Glenn and Scott have taken a historic structure and property and maintained the historic charisma but equipped it with all the modern conveniences.

We stayed in Glenn and Scott’s Poolside Cabana. It was once a carriage house. Now, it is the ultimate in air conditioned, beautifully and tastefully decorated comfort. The huge 1928 era swimming pool rests irresistibly just out the door inviting guests in for a refreshing clothing optional dip.

If you are looking for a short term vacation rental with an old Florida feel where you can embrace peace and tranquility, this is the place.

The Big Coconut Guesthouse – Our Interview With Owner David Medici

Author: , July 28th, 2017

The Big Coconut Guesthouse

Our Interview With Owner David Medici

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

The Big Coconut Guesthouse in Fort Lauderdale is now high on our list of favorite places to stay. The accommodations are excellent, the grounds are beautifully tropical and the whole atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. From the courtyard seating to the complimentary Happy Hour to the crystal clear swimming pool to the complimentary Continental Breakfast, everything is designed to encourage guests to get to know each other and become family.

We spoke with owner David Medici and asked him to tell us more.

How would you describe The Big Coconut Guesthouse in one sentence?

One of the most welcoming guesthouses in Fort Lauderdale where all guests are treated like they are part of a family.

What is the history of The Big Coconut Guesthouse?

I owned another men’s guesthouse called Coconut Cove. There was a void created after the closing of the Coconut Cove that has been filled with the opening of The Big Coconut. Many of the guests that had stayed at the Coconut Cove have already visited and many more are making plans to stay at the Big Coconut.

What is special about The Big Coconut Guesthouse?

The Staff goes out of the way to create a friendly comfortable atmosphere where all guests are made to feel welcome. Whether you are staying a single night or an extended stay you are treated with the same hospitality.

The staff is extremely knowledgeable about local restaurants, nightlife and shopping experiences and will point you in the right direction.

I designed our courtyard to encourage socializing. We have big tables under umbrellas where guys can sit, talk, enjoy a drink and get to know each other. Our guests quickly become friends even though they

are from different backgrounds and different parts of the country or the world.

During the morning breakfast or the weekend happy hour many guests get to know one another and become life long friends. You can’t make a trip without running into someone you met before or making new friends that make your stay more enjoyable.

We also have a complimentary Happy Hour where we set up a poolside bar. Our guests can have a drink or two or three and spend an hour getting to know each other.

Guys spend a lot of time in the clothing optional pool talking to each other too.

What accommodations are available at The Big Coconut Guesthouse?

There are rooms that have a King size bed with full kitchens or just a wet bar. Additional rooms have two Queen beds with a wet bar.

There is also a Penthouse apartment which is a one bedroom apartment with central air that has a private balcony overlooking the pool.

Who stays at The Big Coconut Guesthouse?

The guests tend to be more from the bear community but still has a nice mix of an older and younger crowd where all guests intermingle instead of the breaking off into cliques that tends to happen at other resorts.

Our Thoughts

The Big Coconut Guesthouse in Fort Lauderdale is now one of our favorite places to stay. Everything about this resort is done with care. Owner David Medici obviously loves doing what he does and it shows. He has created a beautiful guesthouse where gay men can be as nude as they want to be and accepted as family by all. Bravo, David!

The Big Coconut Guesthouse is located at 1021 N. E. 13th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304.

SAILORdudes Gay Sailing Adventures – Nude and Clothing Optional Gay Cruises

Author: , March 24th, 2017

SAILORdudes Gay Sailing Adventures – Nude and Clothing Optional Gay Cruises

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

People love to sail and cruise. People love nudist and naturist vacations. SAILORdudes Gay Sailing Adventures combines it all offering nude and clothing optional gay cruises.

We asked René, owner and skipper at SAILORdudes, to tell us more.

How would you describe SailorDudes in one sentence?

SAILORdudes Gay Sailing Adventures organizes fun group sailing cruises (nude and clothing optional) for the gay community as well as tailor-made sailing charters for private parties.

Why is nudism / naturism an important and healthy choice?

Being nude gives a sense of freedom that is experienced even more in nature. A sailing yacht offers privacy, as well the option to explore beautiful and different nature every day of the sailing cruise.

Be it a secluded beach or a clear water bay: gently sailing along beautiful spots and be yourself without being bothered by clothes is, for many, an excellent way of spending an active gay naked holiday.

The guys can sun-bathe nude on deck, swim nude and actually be nude 24/7 unless we go ashore to do some shopping.

What is special about SailorDudes nudist / naturist cruises?

On our SAILORdudes (or SAILORnudes maybe ) sailing cruises that are specifically advertised as nude cruises (as opposed to clothing optional), we expect the guys to share the joy of being naked round the clock (where and when appropriate of course.)

Also, we try to find nice secluded bays to stay overnight as much as possible to enjoy the privacy of our yacht.

Total freedom in beautiful sailing areas with like minded gay naturist guys is the idea behind our nude cruises.

And for private parties that do not wish to join a group, we can also organize tailor-made nude cruises – including a gay, naturist skipper,of course, if needed.

We have a special page about nude sailing cruises on our website: http://www.sailordudes.com/gay-nude-sailing-cruises/

Some general reasons why guys choose to sail with us:
1) We sail out of passion and not because we have to make a living out of it
2) Our prices are the lowest and what you see on the site is what you pay. There are no hidden (booking) fees.
3) We have over fifteen years sailing experience as a skipper
4) Comfort. Unlike others, we do not use the saloon to sleep additional guys on board and use the cabins only
5) We offer both organized group sailing cruises with open registration for singles and couples, as well as tailor-made sailing cruises for private charters with and without skipper
6) Sailing experience is not required
7) Last but not least: our sailing cruises are fun!
Picture

Who attends SailorDudes cruises? Is it all ages and body shapes?

SAILORdudes tends to attract sporty guys in the age range of end twenties to forties. We do not exclude other ages, but for each trip we make an effort to bring like-minded guys together to have a good time on board.

This is also and mostly because people share cabins without too much space and privacy as well as the fact that older guys may look for a more relaxing experience whereas younger guys look for more party time. So if a group tends to be younger by average, we will advise other interested guys where the age difference is too high, to join a group closer to their age.

And we do the same, the other way around. In practice, it always works out nicely and the age ranges are not too strict and usually lead to a nice mix of people on board.

What plans do you have for the future?

Keep sailing! Keep sharing my sailing passion with others. Keep meeting interesting people from all over the world.

I have no plans to grow my business significantly. I sometimes hear comments that the more commercial operators go on routine.

For me, organizing just a few trips each year, keeps is interesting and that apparently shows, looking at the satisfaction scores in my guest book that I ask the guys at the end of a trip.

Conclusion

If you are gay and a nudist, naturist or skinny dipping vacation sounds perfect for you, then SAILORdudes Gay Sailing Adventures is the place to look.

Nude At The Bottom of the Grand Canyon – Nude Raft Trips

Nude At The Bottom of the Grand Canyon – Nude Raft Trips

By Beverly B. Price for GayTravelersMagazine

Grand – and magnificent, splendid, glorious, superb, impressive, awe-inspiring, majestic.   It is impossible to be in the depths of the Grand Canyon and believe that the word “grand” says it all.

I have traveled with other nude passengers all 280 miles of Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry to Lake Mead.  I have been in the majority of the stunning (and all different) side canyons.  I have also made shorter trips to be hauled out by chopper at Whitmore Wash.  Each trip is unique.

The rafts splash through numerous rapids.  The water is cold and deep and swift.  Or they float along in serenely where only the descending call of the canyon wren can be heard.  Or they pull up to a campsite for the night next to the warm water of a side stream.

The canyon bighorn sheep are unafraid of the rafts. The stars are endless.  It is a spiritual experience and one that should not be adulterated.

Teddy Roosevelt perhaps said it best on January 11, 1908, when he stated, “Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”

If you would like to experience the great wonder of nature – and do so naturally – there are nude raft trips planned.  Simply send a message to bbprice@aol.com  and ask for information.  Please put “Grand Canyon Raft Trip” in the subject line.

More information:

We have visited multiple AANR member locations including Cypress Cove Nudist Resort, and Lake Como Family Nudist Resort and Community and we have enjoyed Florida’s Haulover Beach for years. As a gay, married couple, we have always felt accepted. There truly is something liberating, tranquil and very social about nudism and naturism.

Naked Boys Singing Tour – Six guys. Sixteen songs. No clothes!

Author: , November 27th, 2016

naked-boys-singingNaked Boys Singing Tour
Six guys. Sixteen songs. No clothes!

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

Since 1998, people everywhere have been laughing and cheering their way through every moment of the off-Broadway hit Naked Boys Singing. Orlando, Florida producer Tim Evanicki is overseeing a national tour of the international hit musical revue.

We asked Tim Evanicki, Producer of Naked Boys Singing, about the show.

How would you describe, in one sentence, Naked Boys Singing?

A fun escape that pokes fun and celebrates the powers and insecurities that come along with being naked.

What can we expect to see in Naked Boys Singing?

Six guys, sixteen songs, and no clothes – a winning combination!

Who comes to see Naked Boys Singing?

Everyone. Some of our best audiences have been full of straight women. We even had a special performance for a 90th Birthday Celebration for the most wonderful lady in Orlando. So much fun!

What can you tell us about the Naked Boys Singing tour?

The tour is just part of several productions of Naked Boys Singing that will be produced around the country by Tim Evanicki Productions and Ronnie Larsen Presents. The tour cast is soon traveling to Atlanta and Rochester, NY, while we open a sit-down production in Orlando, FL.

Other sit-down (non-touring) productions are being planned for Chicago and Boston.

All in all, there will be 3-4 casts of Naked Boys Singing!

What surprises people the most about Naked Boys Singing?

After the first song, the nudity is no longer shocking. No one believes us when we say that until they see the show. People buy their first ticket for the nudity. They come back for the spectacular singing and dancing!

Conclusion:

We enjoyed the 2007 film of Naked Boys Singing and we are looking forward to seeing this version in person in Orlando.

The Showboat Branson Belle

Enjoy dinner, music and comedy on an 1880’s style paddle-wheeler

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

In the 1800’s, paddle-wheelers were described as floating palaces. Today, in Branson, Missouri, you can experience the joy of exploring the beautiful Table Rock Lake on a majestic paddle-wheeler named The Showboat Branson Belle while enjoying a multi-course dinner and a show!

After our dinner cruise aboard The Showboat Branson Belle, we spoke with Showboat Branson Belle host and comedian Christopher James.

Can you describe The Showboat Branson Belle in one sentence?

The showboat is the ultimate vacation experience, a cruise, a meal and a show all in one!

What is your role at The Showboat Branson Belle?

I am similar to a cruise director acting to welcome guest, make their experience as worry free as possible, introduce our amazing performers, and of course entertain.

What acts perform on The Showboat Branson Belle?

Cassandre is our featured female vocalist, the five member Showmen, dance group Rhythm, the Rockin’ Dockers band and of course me as host and comedian.

What do you love most about performing on The Showboat Branson Belle?

Every show is a new experience for me because I interact with the audience so much. No two cruises are ever the same.

In your opinion, why are Branson and its attractions so popular?

Variety! Branson truly does offer something for everyone. It has changed so much on the past few years and continues to evolve.

Our thoughts:

We enjoyed our dinner cruise aboard the $8 million Showboat Branson Belle. Whether we were enjoying the food, comedy, magic, music and dancing or roaming the decks for the 360 views of Table Rock Lake, our dinner cruise experience was unique, relaxing and entertaining.
Christopher James is the perfect host / emcee for the show, He seems to enjoy every second of his time on stage and interacting with the audience.

“This is how we do salad. Take that Olive Garden!” he boasted humorously as salads were served to dinner guests.

His “Yes No” audience participation game – somewhat like the Simon Says game of your childhood – had the audience both laughing and cheering.

Featured female vocalist Cassandré Faimon-Haygood is comfortable belting out tunes from “Downtown” and “Feelin’ Groovy” while wearing white, knee high go-go boots to joining with The Showmen for a selection of twenty-seven songs in nine minutes and even some Disney tunes.

The Rhythm clogging and dance group is known as The Fastest Feet West of the Mississippi.

Our meal included salad, dinner rolls, choice of beverage, choice of entrée and dessert.

We enjoyed our dinner cruise aboard The Showboat Branson Belle. If you are a fan of dinner theater entertainment or historic ship replicas, make sure you visit this Branson, Missouri tourist and local favorite.

Eureka SpringsArkansas – We spent six days exploring the Ozarks and what we found was amazing!

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

We had no idea what to expect when we were invited to visit Arkansas and Missouri. We spent six days exploring Eureka Springs and the Ozarks and what we found was amazing!

* Famous natural springs, lakes and rivers – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Eureka Springs Waterways)
* Beautiful rolling hills – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Eureka Springs Visitors Guide)
* Artists and art galore – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Eureka Springs Gallery Association)
* Pioneering citizens for equal rights – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Diversity Weekend)
* Historic and picturesque downtown – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Eureka Springs Chamber)
* LGBT relocation and business hotspot – check! (www.EurekaSprings.org or Out In Eureka)
* Spooky historic hotel – check! (1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa)
* Significant architecture – check! (Thorncrown Chapel)
* Mayor with a cool nickname – check! (Butch Berry)

We spent the night in a spooky hotel complete with a ghost tour. We strolled the historic streets and spoke with award winning artists. We enjoyed delicious meals ranging from upscale to something called ArkMex.

We had dinner with Eureka Springs Mayor Robert Dale “Butch” Berry. This is what he told us about Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

In one sentence, how would you describe Eureka Springs?

Eureka Springs, clinging to limestone walls, nestled in the mountains and surrounded by water, is a vibrant, authentic and historic cultural “island” in Northwest Arkansas known for its arts, architecture and culinary uniqueness.

How is Eureka Springs unique in architecture, dining and lodging?

Eureka Springs is the only town which has been listed in its entirety by its (1969) city limits on the National Register of Historic Places with National Significance.

Area restaurants can satisfy anyone’s appetite with everything from down-home Southern classics to romantic, candlelit dinners. With over 80 restaurants in the area that has award-winning restaurants serving savory Czech-German dishes, authentic Italian cuisine and spicy East Indian fare. You’ll find Mediterranean, Chinese, Irish, Mexican, Cajun, and Thai as well. You can also enjoy lunch or dinner on a dining car at Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway.

When it comes to lodging, cozy up in a downtown B&B, historic hotels, modern motel, a romantic private suite or cottage, or a cabin in the woods. And if you want to spend the night in a treehouse or with a lion or tiger in your backyard, we have that too!

How has Eureka Springs become such a home for talented artists and a destination for art lovers?

Artists have been flocking to Eureka Springs since the early 1920’s to live in naturally creative setting free from distraction and rich with inspiration.

Louis and Elsie Freund started the ‘art colony’ phenomenon in the 40’s when they opened an art school in Eureka. As nationally known WPA muralists and artists, the Freund’s attracted folks from around the country. They also organized some of the first art fairs and artisan workshops in the area.

Quickly, galleries opened downtown, art festivals were born. The May Festival of the Arts will celebrate 30 years in 2017!

Today, we have over 48 galleries, more than 350 working artists,  the Eureka Springs School of the Arts, Opera in the Ozarks, Melonlight Dance Theater, Eureka Springs Plein Air Festival and the Eureka Springs Artist Studio Tour, to name a few.

Artists like to live where other artists live and visitors appreciate their craft – Eureka Springs is that place.

How is Eureka Springs a destination for family travel?

Deep in the Ozark Mountains, Eureka Springs is a family paradise just brimming with activities – The Great Passion Play, one of the nation’s largest large cat sanctuaries, Turpentine Creek, and a Zipline over our valleys.

The city has over 63 springs and is surrounded by two rivers and three lakes with great fishing, smooth water for canoe or kayak floats, boating, jet skiing and paddle boarding.

Plus a 1600-acre city park, one of the largest city parks in the US, twice as large as Central Park, that is crisscrossed with 25 miles of hiking and biking trails and then there are several caves in the area available for touring.

Over 1.3 million visitors a year agree!

How is Eureka Springs a destination for LGBT travel?

Eureka Springs is the only city in Arkansas with a full non-discrimination ordinance clearly stating that Eureka Springs embraces equality, diversity and welcomes EVERYBODY.

Eureka Springs celebrates the LGBT community several times a year with Diversity Weekends.

Many of the galleries, restaurants, lodging and shops are LGBT owned.

Eureka Springs understands that equality and diversity are good for business, quality of life and essential for the arts, culture and entrepreneurial growth of Eureka Springs

Conclusion:

If the word eureka means “I’ve found it,” then Eureka Springs, Arkansas may be the most perfectly named city in the USA.

Liberty Garden Suites – Interview With Owners of Gay Accommodations in Dania Beach, Florida

Author: , September 8th, 2016

Liberty Garden Suites
Dania Beach, Florida

Gay owned and operated garden suites between Fort Lauderdale and Haulover Beach

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

liberty-garden-suites-smallLiberty Suites in Dania Beach has been our favorite south Florida gay resort for years. Now rebranded as Liberty Garden Suites with a new look and focus, we know it will be a success with gay travelers looking for gay owned and operated accommodations just minutes from Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport and the world-famous clothing-optional Haulover Beach.

We chatted with owners Joe Van Eron and Jack Zimmerman.

How would you describe Liberty Garden Suites in one sentence?

We are sure you will love our unique “Piece of Tropical Paradise” with attractive, immaculately clean, turn key, self-catering accommodations, and the company of our Gentlemen Guests.

What makes Liberty Garden Suites unique?

We are centrally located in Greater Fort Lauderdale in Historic Dania Beach, just 5 minutes south of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades, and are the closest Gay Accommodation to the World Famous Nude Beach at Haulover. Everyday conveniences of markets, restaurants & shops are within blocks, and we are short 15-20 minute drive to all Gay Greater Fort Lauderdale & Wilton Manors Nightlife and Attractions, as well as 5 Casinos including the new Casino @ Dania Beach..

The entire property is lushly landscaped and offers clothing optional sundeck, outdoor living room, patio dining with BBQ, Hot Tub/Spa, complimentary laundry facility and private off street parking. Each apartment is uniquely decorated, has private adjoining outdoor patio space, all with full kitchens and perfectly set up with all the amenities for vacation or longer term “Home Away from Home” Stays.

How would you describe your guests?

There are so few properties left that still offer a safe secure and private environment for exclusively Gay Vacation Rentals….our clients remain mostly mature, retired, well educated, successful and upscale Gay Men, singles and couples….which we believe there is a continued market, mostly with the aging boomers… as you know the Gay travel world has substantially changed, especially with the younger generations…the vacation rental market has exploded with Airbnb, Home Away, and the hundreds of other sites….and they no longer have to be so protective as we did in the early years and travel to large cites with Gay populations and Gay villages, and stay in safe Gay Guesthouses, and patronize strictly gay bars and restaurants….which I think is just wonderful…especially when I remember that I got my first apartment in Manhattan in January of 1969, 6 months before the Stonewall riots… “WE’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY !!”

Do you have any upcoming specials or packages?

Currently we are offering Summer Specials with rates as low as $79/Night and $495/Week….through September 30th …and as always during the off peak season we continue to accommodate longer term relocation stays as we remain an affordable and more pleasant alternative for those relocating in or out of the area, as well as extended business stays…and as Always, Pet Welcome.

AMTRAK and the Greater Seattle Business Association have created a contest for LGBTQ couples to win a trip on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and one-night stay at the Seattle Sheraton.

Here’s what they said:

To celebrate LGBTQ PRIDE month and show its continued support of the LGBTQ community, Amtrak announced today that it has partnered with the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) to launch a contest for LGBTQ couples.

This contest offers LGBTQ couples a chance to enter to win a trip on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight complete with a complimentary one-night stay at the Seattle Sheraton.

The Honeymoon Train features roomette service for two people and travels from Seattle to the San Francisco Bay Area. To enter and view the official contest rules, couples should visit www.TravelGaySeattle.com. This contest runs from June 25, 2016– Sep. 6, 2016, with the winning couple being selected on Sep 14, 2016.

“Amtrak is excited and proud to show its support of the LGBTQ community through this unique partnership with GSBA,” said Darlene Abubakar, Senior Director, National Advertising and Marketing Programs, Amtrak. “Amtrak strives to continually demonstrate its commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the Honeymoon Train is just one example of the many consumer promotions we activate throughout the year.”

In addition to this partnership with GSBA, Amtrak is celebrating Pride Month with its support of Festivals in Washington, DC, New York City, Seattle and St. Louis.
