Transgender Crosswalk Hits the Streets of Calgary

Transgender Crosswalk - Calgary

Two new crosswalks have appeared in Calgary in time for pride, one rainbow and one with the transgender pride colors.

It is the first time that the city has painted a trans pride crosswalk, and becomes the third Canadian city to do so, after after Whitehorse and Lethbridge. The one in Lethbridge is the first permanent transgender crosswalk.

The crosswalks in Calgary can be found at 4 St. and 17 Ave. S.W.

“It’s quite a positive and supportive statement for our city to have that done,” Jason Kingsley, president and executive producer of Calgary Pride, said.

Hilights From Canada Pride – Nomadic Boys

Canada Pride - Nomadic Boys

Justin Trudeau – as if the charming, dreamy, Disney-Prince-Eric-Aladdin Canadian Prime Minister couldn’t get any more perfect, he turns up at a gay pride event, gives an inspiring speech about the importance of inclusivity and diversity in society, then leads the parade through the streets of Montreal, waving a transgender flag and shouting:

“Happy Pride! Bonne Fierté!”

In August 2017, Montreal hosted the first ever Fierte Canada Pride, an 11 days festival of parties, performances by artists like Nelly Furtado and Ru Paul drag race superstars, then culminating with a large parade on the final day, led by Justin.

We were so proud to be a part of it and like the Puerto Vallarta Pride in Mexico, it ranks as one of our favourite gay pride events. Here’s our 5 favourite moments from the very first Fierte Canada Pride in Montreal.

Justin! Justin! Justin!

Maybe we’re more Justin obsessed than we should be – his perfect bubble butt broke the internet, after all – but we can’t think of any other country in the world where its leader turns up, speaks about how important the LGBTQ community is, then leads the entire parade through the busy streets. In fact, Canada is the only country in the world that we know of, which has its own national gay pride event.

And if it couldn’t get anymore awesome, Justin was joined by another world leader: Leo Varadkar, the gay Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), who marched by his side, with his husband to hand.

After travelling in countries where being gay is illegal and can even lead to a death sentence, it is so inspiring and significant for us to be in a country where the government not only gives such strong visibility to the LGBTQ community, but openly embraces and celebrates us – just like Justin did.

Abalonia Inn – Ogunquit Gay Bed & Breakfast

Abalonia Inn - Ogunquit Gay Bed & Breakfast

Periodically we’ll feature one of our properties here to let our readers know about some great gay friendly places to stay:

Located in the heart of Ogunquit, Maine, the Abalonia Inn is a completely renovated 1840 Ogunquit farmhouse converted to a 17 room inn.

The rooms have great period detail with exposed post and beams, wide pine floors, and period detailed furniture.

Our location in Ogunquit is ideal. We are a short walk to the beach, clubs, and entertainment that only Ogunquit has to offer.

Enjoy a walk on Marginal Way, a cliff walk that goes from the center of the village to beautiful Perkins Cove, a working fishing village. You can also enjoy 3 miles of pristine beach, which Yankee Magazine just named the best in New England.

At night, you can go enjoy one of the many restaurants, or have a cocktail at the Front Porch or Maine Street dance clubs. For those of you who love the arts, visit one of Ogunquit’s many Museums, the fabulous shows at the Ogunquit Playhouse, or entertainment at both Maine Street and Admiral’s Inn lounge.

The Abalonia is rich in history beginning with its first owners, Barak Maxwell, the richest and most influential shipbuilder in Ogunquit. In 1940 it was converted to an inn.

It eventually fell in disrepair, and was brought back to life with its current owners in 2012.

Every room at the Abalonia Inn was completely gutted, taking particular care to preserve the historic nature of the inn.

Amenities include a beautiful new saline pool, firepit, wireless internet, and great common areas. Each room has a refrigerator, either a king or queen sized bed, and a large 32″ LCD/LED television. But by far, our biggest amenity is our in-town location.

If you’re looking for an historic inn with a modern flair, come stay with us at the Abalonia Inn in Ogunquit, Maine!

TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Edith “Edie Windsor

Edith Windsor
June 20, 1929 – Sept. 12, 2017

President Barack Obama said it best:  “Former President Barack Obama offered his condolences Tuesday following the death of Edith Windsor, 88, an LGBT rights activist whose lawsuit against the federal government led to the federal recognition of same-sex couples.

“America’s long journey towards equality has been guided by countless small acts of persistence, and fueled by the stubborn willingness of quiet heroes to speak out for what’s right. Few were as small in stature as Edie Windsor  and few made as big a difference to America,” Obama said in a statement. Windsor sued the government when she received a bill for an estate tax after the passing of her first wife, which led the Supreme Court to  issue a decision in 2013 overturning part of the Defense of Marriage Act.

“In my second inaugural address, I said that if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,” Obama said Tuesday.  “The day that the Supreme Court issued its 2013 ruling in United States v. Windsor was a great day for Edie, and a great day for America — a victory for human decency, equality, freedom, and justice. And I called Edie that day to congratulate her.”

Edith is survived by her second wife Judith Kasen-Windsor, whom she married in 2016 after the Obergefell v. Hodges decision guaranteeing the right of same-sex couples to marry.

“I thought about Edie that day,” Obama said of Windsor’s landmark case, “I thought about all the millions of quiet heroes across the decades whose countless small acts of courage slowly made an entire country realize that love is love — and who, in the process, made us all more free.”

THANK YOU EDIE WINDSOR AND THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA !  You both have made us proud to be Americans!  and YOU have made America GREAT again in the true sense ! Edie’s website is http://www.ediewindsor.com/

Always remember to have fun when traveling, meet new people and talk to everyone!

Montanita Beach in Ecuador – Globetrotter Girls

Montanita Beach, Ecuador - Globetrotter Girls

After spending a week in Guayaquil, which was hot and sticky despite frequent rain showers, I was ready for some beach time. A cool ocean breeze sounded just about perfect.

When I looked into Ecuador’s beaches and tried to decide which one(s) to visit, two names came up over and over again: Canoa and Montañita. Both sounded equally as nice but what made me eventually go for Montañita was the fact that it was quite difficult to get to Canoa.

The bus from Quito takes nearly nine hours (with a change in between), and from Guyaquil around six hours. Montañita was only three hours from Guayaquil by bus. And so Montañita it was.

This little beach town is not only the number one surf spot in all of Ecuador, but it’s also known as one of South America’s prime party destinations. People come from as far as Argentina to celebrate there at massive open air parties in which DJ’s play their sets right on the beach, and the music blasts loudly out of giant speakers, resounding throughout the entire bay.

Mexico’s Ik Kil Cenote – Keep Calm and Wander

Ik Kil Cenote - Keep Calm and Wander

The wonderful cenote Ik Kil in Mexico will never fail to stun you. We arrived around 10:30 in the morning and the parking lot was still almost empty. Yes, we were one of the few who arrived before tour buses came in droves. No, we didn’t join one of those tours because we’re too fabulous to be in crowded buses. 😀 😀 😀 (Scroll down below if you wanna know how we got there.)

What is a cenote?

Cenotes are unique to Mexico, especially in the Yucatan State. They are natural wells surrounded by rocks. Most often they serve as the mouth of an underground river or a cave. They’re also good for snorkeling and diving.

Travel Tips:

Most bus tours to Chichen Itza do not include this in their itinerary. Only few do this. Even the tour agents in our hotel don’t combine this with Chichen Itza Pyramid Tour. However, most Cenote Ik Kil Tour is combined with some other unknown Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula.

If you’re renting a car or on your own, be sure to get here between 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning. This should be your first itinerary of the day if you want to avoid the crowd. The famed Chichen Itza Pyramid is just 5 minutes drive from here.

Colombian Coco Loco – Nomadic Boys

Colombian coco loco

We absolutely loved Cartagena in Colombia. We came here to celebrate Seb’s birthday with a boat trip around the islands. One of the things we discovered was the famous Coco Loco cocktail.

Coco Loco literally means crazy coconut in Spanish. It’s a fresh coconut with vodka/tequila/rum/whiskey mixed in with the coconut water inside to produce an awesome beach cocktail. It is sold by vendors around the Caribbean beaches in Colombia who make it in front of you using fresh coconuts.

However, on a rainy grey day in London, fresh coconuts aren’t as easy to come by, so we put together this recipe to try to recreate this tropical Colombian memory when back home. Our recipe for Colombian coco loco serves 4 people.
