Little Rock, Arkansas: An Improbable Oasis

Little Rock, Arkansas - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

Little Rock, Arkansas may not show up on most LGBT travelers’ domestic bucket list, but maybe it’s time that bucket got bigger. Located in the heart of a very conservative state in the deep red South-a state where, in 2004, voters approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman and employment discrimination against the LGBT community is still legal-Little Rock is a surprisingly sophisticated and seductive city.

Named in September by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as the country’s best moderately sized metropolis, the city heartily embraces gay residents and visitors. With a wealth of LGBT-friendly bars, restaurants and shops, a booming drag scene and a smorgasbord of special queer events, Little Rock, Arkansas just might be the South’s next great gay destination.

Travelers anxious to experience the best of Little Rock LGBT culture would do well to start with its transcendent drag shows. Female impersonation took center stage in the city in 1972, when resident Norman Jones won the first Miss Gay America crown in Nashville. Jones eventually bought the pageant (producing many of the contestants in Little Rock) before opting out in 2005. Today, Jones owns the nightclubs Triniti, which is open Fridays, and Discovery, which opens on Saturdays. Housed in the same massive space, they offer three bars, DJs spinning nearly all night and live entertainment including, of course, drag.

Three Great San Francisco Culinary Hot-Spots

Author: , November 27th, 2013

Presidio Social ClubSan Francisco is more than just tacos and beer; these high-profile eateries show that the City by the Bay can innovate and excite with haute cuisine. From upscale takes on old favorites to destination dining and theme nights, these restaurateurs know how to satisfy their customers!

Presidio Social Club

Tucked away in the Presidio National Park at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge en route to Sonoma, this former military barracks has been converted into a modern eatery that is an urban oasis and a destination dining spot at the same time.

Chef Roy Tang said that some diners pop in for vintage libations and finger foods when rush hour traffic is just too much to bear, while others make Presidio their destination during the special dinners, such as Sunday night’s International Pork Roast, Monday’s Dungeness crab steams, or Wednesday’s “fowl play” night, where the chef steams then fries a whole duck. Tang said that future dinners would feature Petrale sole, a delicate fish that is a local favorite.

UK Christian B&B Owners Lose Appeal to Supreme Court

The Christian guesthouse owners who banned a gay couple from sleeping in a double room has lost their Supreme Court appeal. Hazelmary and Peter Bull refused to let civil partners Steven Preddy and Martyn Hall stay at Chymorvah House in Marazion in Cornwall, England in 2008.

The British couple, who regard any sex outside marriage as a ‘sin’, have already lost their fight in the Court of Appeal.

Five Supreme Court judges unanimously ruled against the guesthouse owners, saying the Bulls had discriminated against the gay couple.

Want to Spend (An Affordable) Christmas in New Orleans?

Author: , November 26th, 2013

New Orleans - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

The one holiday you associate with New Orleans is probably Mardi Gras, for obvious reasons. But three months prior, just as winter is making the rest of the country reach for their snow shovels, another important holiday makes this balmy southern city shine: Christmas. In typical New Orleans fashion, the end-of-year holiday is turned into a month-long series of street festivals, light displays, and live concerts. Ready to take part? We’ll show you how.

Enjoy a free concert in St Louis Cathedral

With its iconic, Disney Castle-like spires, St Louis Cathedral is not only one of the French Quarter’s top attractions – it’s also America’s oldest cathedral. And what better excuse to spend time within its 300-year-old walls than this: every weeknight in December, a free one-hour concert will be held in the cathedral featuring carolers, choirs, gospel singers, and more (6pm, free).

Feast in a five-star hotel

To do a New Orleans-style Christmas properly, you’ll have no choice but to participate in a formal 4-course dinner known as Reveillon. The word actually means ‘awakening’ in French, and your senses will certainly be awakened when you sit down to the Windsor Court Hotel’s version of the traditional holiday feast, which dates back to the mid-1800s. Taking place in the hotel’s opulent Grill Room, this year’s Reveillon will be offered throughout December (except on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve) with course options like crudo of yellowfin tuna, Maple Leaf Farms duck breast, and pear tarte tatin (5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., $60 per person).

UK Supreme Court Will Rule Soon on Homophobic B&B Owners

Author: , November 26th, 2013

Chymorvah Hotel - England - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

Peter and Hazelmary Bull, the Christian B&B owners who were prosecuted for discriminating against a same-sex couple, will learn on Wednesday if their latest legal challenge at the UK Supreme Court has been successful.

Civil partners Martin Hall and Steven Preddy were turned away from the Chymorvah Hotel near Penzance in 2008 under the Bulls’ policy of not allowing unmarried couples to share rooms.

Judges have twice ruled the Bulls broke equality laws in the running of their business.
