Nova Scotia: Halifax Rallies to Support Gay Pride Celebration

Author: , July 30th, 2012

“It is not ‘us’ and ‘them’ anymore,” said Krista Snow, the volunteer chair of Halifax Pride and former Halifax City Council member. “We have gone from a completely ‘gay event’ to a celebration for the entire Halifax community.”

An estimated 100,000 people attended yesterday’s Pride parade. With record participation by community organizations as well as national sponsors such as TD Bank, it took nearly three hours for the dozens of floats and contingents to weave their way through the streets of the historic maritime city.

The parade was just one of the activities that were part of this year’s 25th anniversary celebration, which kicked off last Friday, July 20.

Honeymooning in Vegas

Author: , July 30th, 2012

Gay Travel: Honeymooning in Vegas“I love Vegas,” he said, emphasis on the verb, his voice a mixture of awe, enthusiasm – and relief at finding himself (again) in the world’s most spectacular adult playground.

We were high above the city, on the 64th floor of THEHotel at miX Lounge where the kaleidoscopic view of the Strip appears as an amalgam of Peter Pan’s Neverland and Pinocchio’s Pleasure Island as designed by Busby Berkeley on acid. The Luxor’s pyramid beams blue into the night sky while the Sphinx smiles cryptically; in the near distance, there’s the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State and the MGM lion.

Las Vegas is nothing less than a set designer’s fantasy unleashed without budgetary restrictions or logical constraints. Who wouldn’t succumb to the illusion that everything is within reach if only you want it?

Adventure Travel is Good for Your Health

Author: , July 30th, 2012

Adventure TravelThe Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and work-life balance trainer Joe Robinson[i], author of “Don’t Miss You’re Life,” say vacations are good for you, especially ones that emphasize fitness, nature and social stimulation. Three ATTA members- Country Walkers, Fit For Trips and Sol Fitness Adventures-attest to Robinson’s claims that a fitness-focused trip can reduce stress, increase focus in the workplace, and help weight-loss efforts as well as overall fitness.

Every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to two minutes, according to the Framington heart study[ii]. Country Walkers, which began 33 years ago with the simple idea of exploring the world actively, introduced safari walking tours in 2012. The company says that walking an extra 20 minutes each day can burn off seven pounds of body fat per year; addition health benefits include relieving symptoms of depression and stress to preventing diabetes and heart disease.

“Adventure travel options give travelers the ability to set their own pace while immersing themselves in the local culture and natural beauty of the region,” said AnneCecile Blanchot, spokesperson for Country Walkers.

Riding on the Orient Express

Author: , July 30th, 2012

Gay Travel: Riding on the Orient ExpressBeads of sweat trickle down my forehead on a muggy night in Bangkok when I realize I’m late for the Eastern & Oriental Express train. I’ve missed the shuttle from my hotel and my baggage bounces over the unevenly paved streets as I run to the station in a panic.

As I fly down the platform, my dress billows behind me. I feel like a character in an old movie as I sprint for the train, but it’s not Paris in the 1920s and I’m not chasing the love of my life. Instead, I plan to be chasing back martinis as I journey through northeast Thailand’s picturesque landscapes of rice paddy fields and lush hilltops, en route to Laos on this modern luxury train.

Flustered, I hop on seconds before the green and cream train toot-toots out of the station, and just as I imagined, it’s as though I’ve landed in a bygone era. Cherry-wood-walled corridors inlaid with deep-set maroon carpets pave the way to elm-burr paneled cabins, outfitted with floral-patterned furniture and adorned with veneers of rosewood marquetry and intricate inlays.
