Fairytale Vienna

Vienna It’s been named the city with the world’s highest quality of life in a recent ranking and is famed for its fairytale atmosphere – but there’s more to Vienna than initially meets the eye. The Austrian capital’s rich history is rife with gay figures, setting the scene for it’s modern status as the country’s epicenter of gay life. And which better place to choose than a city of stunning beauty, bursting with palaces and well-kept parks as much as clubs and bars, known for residents who aren’t just fond of but perfected the coffeehouse culture. Gay life in Vienna is all about the districts of Mariahilf (sixth district) and Margareten (fifth district) with the Wienzeile, the twin roads running either side of the River Wien, marking the districts’ border. With its borders roughly marked by the U-Bahn stations Karlsplatz and Pilgramstrasse, the center of Vienna’s gay quarter appears in the form of the Naschmarkt – the name literally translates as snack or nibbles market (albeit more of the sweet kind), but it offers everything, from fruit to clothes and a fun flea market.

Charmed by Villa De Leyva, Colombia

Villa De Leyva, Colombia Ah, Villa de Leyva! It was love at first sight between this charming little village with its cobble-stone streets and bright white houses and me. With the exception of Minca, I’d only been to big cities in Colombia so far, and it was a refreshing change to experience a sleepy mountain village. And it’s not just a quaint little village, but also one of the oldest ones in the country, dating back to 1572, and sometimes it felt like someone transported me right back to the 16th century – most of Villa de Leyva feels just like it must have felt then (except for the addition of cars and motorbikes). About 4 hours north of Bogota, it is one of the most popular weekend getaways for the Bogotanos, and it’s easy to see why: the narrow streets are lined with artisan stores for some shopping, or you can simply enjoy a cup of coffee right on the plaza, which happens to be the largest town square in all of South America (!), and its vast size is remarkable. Rease and I spent a few days doing exactly that: wandering the narrow cobble-stone streets, marveling at the beautifully arranged flowers on the balconies of most houses and the meticulously tiled terracotta roofs, sipping beers on the plaza, indulging in ice cream to cool off (Villa de Leyva gets incredibly hot during the day!), and trying to put our cameras down (nearly impossible).

Gay Taipei & Tainan

W Taipei - gay Taipei Not so long ago, the label “Made in Taiwan” inferred mass-produced products that were made quickly, sold cheaply, and exported globally–typical fodder for our throwaway society. Then Taiwan made a seismic shift away from cheap, labor-intensive things like toys and textiles, to become the world’s biggest manufacturer of notebook computers. A report in 2013 estimated that 89% of the world’s notebooks and 46% of desktop PCs were manufactured by Taiwanese companies, with global brands like Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo utilizing Taiwan’s technological and creative talents. Taiwanese brands such as Acer, ASUS, and smartphone manufacturer HTC have also become major players. This change isn’t restricted to hi-tech industries. Taipei, the capital city, has been named World Design Capital for 2016 by the ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design), a great honor for Taiwan’s growing design scene. Amid the gleaming architecture of Taipei’s Xinyi financial district, a historic tobacco factory built in 1937 during the Japanese Imperial Era has become the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, its modernist-style warehouses now converted into exhibition spaces, cafes, and design studios. Here, you’ll find the Taiwan Design Museum, whose galleries showcase the best of Taiwanese and international design, including recipients of the Golden Pin Design Award, a mark of innovative Taiwanese design that’s been awarded to products including bikes, teapots, and computer disk drives.

City Sunday: Eureka Springs, Arkansas

city-sundays-eureka-springs Hey all, Welcome to our weekly series on the blog and our Facebook travel groups – City Sundays. Each week we’ll select a different LGBT friendly city to talk about, and we’ll invite our innkeeper and travel agent/tour operator friends to come talk with us about it as well. From “Out in Eureka“: The first city in Arkansas to officially endorse same-sex marriage and the first and only city in the state with a Domestic Partnership Registry, and now the only city in Arkansas with an LGBT specific anti-discrimination ordinance, Eureka Springs also the number one vacation destination in the Mid-South for out and proud LGBT travelers. The antithesis of the redneck stereotype, our micro mecca has been a beyond-gay-friendly getaway for decades– long before out was in. Here, one Gay Pride weekend won’t do. So, Spring, Summer and Fall we also celebrate a trifecta of Diversity Weekends that attract thousands of gay and lesbian gaycationers. A microcosm of San Francisco, we boast a disproportionately large gay population, dozens of gay-owned and gay-friendly B&Bs, hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, art galleries, shops, turn-of-the-century Victorian homes and vintage trolleys plying steep and narrow village streets. Have you ever been? What did you do while you were there? Do you wanna go? Let’s chat!
