Woodstock: The Start of a Cultural Revolution
From Henri Tischler, Twin Gables, Woodstock, New York

Nestled in New York’s Catskill Mountains and Hudson River Valley, Woodstock has long served as a symbol of the Cultural Revolution that took root in the late 1960s. As such, it has also earned a reputation for diversity and tolerance, drawing legions of lesbian and gay visitors, as well as a formidable number of full- and part-time homeowners.
A visit to the town’s Village Green, a central meeting point for visitors and locals alike, is a case in point. On any given day it’s not unusual to hear drum circles exploring detailed patterns of rhythm, or war protestors raising “Families Against War” and “Woodstock Vietnam Veterans Against the War” signs above their heads.
The town’s reputation for diversity and tolerance, however, dates back further than the iconic 1969 rock festival bearing its name. In reality, that reputation stems back to an earlier time, when, in 1902, Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and Hervey White chose Woodstock as the site for the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, their Utopian artists’ community.
