Eating Out: South Florida

Author: , December 26th, 2014

Miami BeachSouth Florida continues to establish itself as an exciting food destination with an ever-expanding selection of styles and cuisines. The annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival (www.sobefest.com) is certainly an indication of the passion people have for fine food here, but a visit to some of the newer establishments in the region will motivate you to return regularly.

For years, when anyone talked about food and Miami they generally meant South Beach. The resurgence of that neighborhood has been endlessly chronicled and it remains a fun, desirable destination. Recently, however, downtown Miami is quite rightfully getting a lot of attention. Culturally alive, with revamped hotels and new restaurants, downtown Miami is a hip, urban destination for the savvy traveler who wants more than just a typical beach vacation.

Smack in the center of it all is the comparatively new b2 Miami Downtown hotel. (Tel: 305-358-4555. www.bhotelsandresorts.com). Smartly appointed with a chic contemporary flair, the hotel is centrally located and the perfect jumping-off place for exploring some of the new restaurants in the downtown area.

Grand Resort, FloridaAnytime is a great time to visit Florida but when the temperatures are falling all over the rest of the country, it is THE time to head south for the wonderful life that South Florida offers. We have been driving to South Florida in January for 13 years now.

We always stay in Ft. Lauderdale at the Grand Resort and Spa, www.grandresort.net and it is always perfect. We meet a lot of the same guys that comes down at the same that we do. Quite a few of the guys this time are from London, South America, Paris, Canada and all parts of the U.S.

They do everything perfectly at the Grand and that is why their guests keep returning year after year. Casey the owner and all of the staff including J. D., Bill and Paul are so professional. They have consistently been rated as one of the very top gay resorts in the country.

Taboo RestaurantThere are two special restaurants in the area which are always on our list of places to dine. One is the Ta-boo Restaurant in Palm Beach. It is located right in the middle of Worth Avenue and just a block from Neiman-Marcus. Their address is 221 Worth Avenue and their website is: www.taboorestaurant.com.

Besides being the perfect place to see and be seen it is also THE place to dine. We have been dining there for the past 13 years and always have a perfect dining experience. The ambiance, food, food presentation and the service are always impeccable!

They just happen to have the finest server in all of South Florida. Luiz has been on their staff for many years and does everything possible to make sure that you have a perfect dining experience. He really needs to start a school to train servers. Be sure and always ask for one of his tables when dining there. THANKS Luiz for being so professional! Ta-boo has been in business since 1941 and under the current ownership, Franklyn DeMarco and partner Nancy Simmons since 1990. They certainly know how to operate a restaurant perfectly. The photo shows Ray with server, Luiz.

Versailles RestaurantThe other restaurant is in Miami called Versailles which is the most famous Cuban restaurant in the world! Check out their website at www.versaillesrestaurant.com. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant itself is beautiful and extremely unique. The service is great and the food is to simply die for!

If you have never tried Cuban coffee before, this is the place to try some. They have a huge menu and you always want to try things that you have never tried before. Their desserts are homemade daily. In an adjoining room they have a bakery shop filled with some of the finest desserts that we have had and you can get these to go. A huge chocolate mousse is only $2.50. Their address is 3555 S.W. 8th St. in Miami.

Auntie MameWhen traveling, it is always great seeing old friends again and making new ones. We always enjoy seeing our dear friend, Auntie Mame who is one of the finest female impersonators in Florida. She has performed on sea cruises as well as New England, New York, Ptown, Palm Springs, California and all over Florida.

Pedro IrigonegaryWe dined with the noted and SUPER Lawyer, Pedro Irigonegaray from Kansas. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.

He is VERY involved with the Kansas Equality Coalition and is a VERY strong supporter for the Gay and Lesbian rights. We have been friends of his for over 25 years. Besides being a very professional attorney, he is also one of the most considerate and entertaining gentlemen that we know. He and Janet are a terrific couple to be around. Every state needs a Lawyer like him for the Gay and Lesbian Community.

Naomi at the World Erotic Art MuseumAnother dear friend that we always enjoying seeing is Naomi Wilzig who owns the World Erotic Art Museum in South Beach: www.weam.com She has devoted her time, energy and money to the Gay and Lesbian community for years. In addition, she owns one of the finest and most interesting museums in the country. Be sure and visit her museum whenever you are in South Florida.

The dozens of bars and restaurants in South Florida are overwhelming. There is always something going on and the restaurants serve a huge selection of almost anything that you might crave. Shopping in South Florida is NOT for the faint hearted. Palm Beach has Worth Avenue which is on a par with Rodeo Drive in California. You literally can find anything there from the finest selection in clothing, antiques, jewelry and anything that tickles your fancy.

Bars and nightclubs seem to come and go from coast to coast a lot. Here in South Florida, you can always check out www.hotspotsmagazine.com in advance to see what is happening in the nightlife around town. They also have listings for restaurants and events going on around the area.
January, when the weather is cold where you live, come on down and enjoy the beach, the ocean and the warm weather!
