Queer Cape Town – Travel Pulse

Cape Town - Pixabay

It goes without saying that Cape Town is probably the queerest city in Africa, but I’d argue that it’s one of the top cities for LGBTQ travelers anywhere on the planet. This thriving metropolis is blessed with an almost embarrassing array of natural beauty, and the city’s progressive attitude is positively refreshing.

Enver Duminy, CEO, Cape Town Tourism, attributes the city’s special nature to several factors:

“LGBTQIA people in South Africa have the same rights as non-LGBTQIA people,” he said. “This is enshrined in our Constitution, which was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the fifth country in the world, but first in Africa, to legalize same-sex marriage, child adoption and surrogacy treatments.”

“Plus, there’s so much for everyone in queer Cape Town, from adventure travel to enjoying the best restaurants and wines. We have won numerous accolades, including breaking a record by being voted ‘Greatest City in the World’ for the sixth consecutive time in the annual Telegraph Travel Awards. We have also been voted ‘The World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination’ for 2018 in the World Travel Awards, reflecting the city’s capacity to delight our visitors.”

Duminy is quick to list the many attractions that make his city such a bucket list destination.

Cape Town Gay Pride – The Globetrotter Guys

Cape Town Gay Pride - The Globetrotter Guys

Gay Pride in Cape Town was not what we expected at all! It really is quite unique compared to many of the other gay pride events we have been to and we highly recommend you add it to your pride bucket-list.

We found Cape Town Pride to be so unique because of the people. We have never seen such a diverse and inclusive crowd of people at a pride festival! Most pride festivals we have been to have been 95% men (which of course is nice for us!), however this is not the case for Cape Town gay pride at all.

There is an even spread across all genders, age, sexuality and race – everyone is well represented which of course is what pride is about. We spoke with the Festival Director of Pride, Matthew Van As and he explained that there is a common misconception that Cape Town Pride is going to be just a festival full of the stereotypical white male crowd – the reality is completely different and as a result Cape Town Pride had a very diverse and local feel to it!

Lets take a look at all you need to know about Cape Town Gay Pride and let us convince you to get yourself booked for next year!

Gay Johannesburg – Breakaway Backpacker

Gay Johannesburg

If you’re an experienced traveler, then you understand the thrill of visiting new countries and experiencing different cultures. When that wanderlust strikes, you get the irresistible urge pack your bags and wander wherever the wind takes you. One destination that might pique your interest is Johannesburg, South Africa, where there is no shortage of culture and scenery.

Colloquially referred to by South Africans as “Jo’burg” or “Jozi,” this is a city with a rich history, and anthropologists have even discovered prehistoric sites here. Today, this South African city has many modern suburbs and business districts, with many areas completely revamped with improved public transportation and infrastructure after South Africa was selected to host the 2010 World Cup. Ranked the third largest city in Africa, this bustling city derives much of its prosperity from gold and diamond mining. Although English is most widely spoken, the country has 11 national languages, including Afrikaans, Zulu, and Xhosa.

Johannesburg has good weather all year long, averaging about 78 degrees, because of its high elevation. However, it’s better to go in winter, May through August, then summer, October through March. Winter has an abundance of sunshine in winter, with mild weather during the day, although it does get cold at nights. Summer is less favorable because it’s the rainy season. Frequent afternoon rainstorms will limit your chances of enjoying a safari or roaming around the streets sightseeing.

Johannesburg’s Attractions

Here is a short list of things to do and places to see:

There are many recreational things to do, from restaurants to theaters, and from museums to safaris. When it comes to shopping for traditional crafts, you may want to visit Market on Main on Sunday, which is only open from 10 am to 3 pm. It’s a creative space for local makers to trade with visitors over the weekend.

Safari South Africa – Lesbian Travel

Safari South Africa If experiencing a safari game drive in South Africa is on your travel ‘bucket list,’ there’s never been a better time to do it. From the elephants to rhinos and lions to the monkeys and warthogs, observing the wildlife in their natural habitat from such a short distance can be an incredibly surreal and once-in-a lifetime experience, one that any avid traveler would likely rate as unforgettable. South Africa is also a destination becoming increasing popular with the LGBTIQ community. Post-apartheid, it’s a country that was among the first to outlaw sexual discrimination as the fifth country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage. And while the country has much to offer with cities such as Cape Town, Sun City, Durban and Johannesburg, the main attraction of the country by far is visiting safari game lodges. In partnership with South African Tourism, I was fortunate enough to join a variety of international media representatives for a Safari South Africa experience at Shamwari Game Reserve (Sarili Lodge) in Port Elizabeth. It’s a ‘must-do’ experience and most safari lodges are easily accessible via short flights from most major cities. Located just over an hour drive from Port Elizabeth airport; our lodge is set within more than 25,000 hectors of land with 6 separate (and equally stunning) 5-star lodges, animal education and rehabilitation facilities and an explorer camp. And while it’s an indulgent experience for solo or couples traveling together, it’s also family-friendly so everyone can relax and explore. The lodge is also a safe and friendly environment for all individuals and at no point in my stay did I feel anything other than completely welcomed.
