One day in Salamanca may not be enough to explore this medieval town. Up to this day, the community is still known as a university town. The town’s premier university – University of Salamanca – is Spain’s oldest university and the world’s 3rd oldest that’s still operating until today.

Salamanca is definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in Spain. Because of its place in the historical culture and art of Spain, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

This city is loaded with attractions and seeing all of them in a day can be too overwhelming, but the following popular attractions can be visited in a day.

The Old and the New Cathedral are built side by side, one in the 4th and the other one in the 15th century, respectively. The former shows a Romanesque architecture and the latter has touches of Renaissance, but they collectively make a spectacle to be amazed at.

The Towers of La Clerecia in Salamanca is locally known as Scala Coeli. You can’t, of course, climb the tower without getting into the Clerecia Church. And yes, you’ve got to pay, too. This church used to be known as the Royal College of the Company of Jesus. It was both a school and a home to the Jesuit priests who taught the students.

This Baroque-style building has two towers – and each gives you a different perspective of the city. Climbing the stairs at La Clerecia might be an arduous task for some but you’ll be rewarded with stunning views. When you’re up there, you’re entirely looking at the past from above, sans the glass skyscrapers of the modern world.

The towering spires from all corners of the city compete with the classical Baroque domes. The red-roofed houses you see everywhere are in contrast with the earth-coloured steeples above churches and edifices. It’s truly wonderful up there!

Spain’s Salamanca Cathedral – Keep Calm and Wander

Salamanca Cathedral refers to two cathedrals combined into one. One is called the Old Cathedral and other as the New Cathedral. The former was built in 12-13th century and the latter was in 16th century. So, the earlier Cathedral is really ancient (Middle Ages) and the new one isn’t really that new. 😀

Salamanca is a university town, famous for the world’s 4th oldest university, the University of Salamanca. And if you walk around, you’ll notice that many of the structures here are really ancient and they all stood the test of time.

From Madrid to Salamanca

You can take a train from Madrid to Salamanca in the morning (8:55) and be back at 6:20 in the evening. Round trip would cost you around 30 euros. You can buy your train ticket here. And also, some tourists visit Salamanca with a combined trip to Avila, where you can find Spain’s most impressive city wall. The two historical cities are just an hour away from each other by car / tour bus. You can find these trips at TripAdvisor.
