First Day in Palm Springs

Trio in Palm Springs - Photo by Ken WilliamsPalm Springs, California is a world unto itself, a famous getaway for Hollywood celebrities and world leaders, and now the home to a thriving LGBT community.

Often hailed as California’s ultimate desert playground, Palm Springs is famous around the globe for its annual White Party and The Dinah, two destination events in April that caters to the gay and lesbian communities. All year around, there is something fabulous to do in the desert, though tourism slows down during the dog days of summer when the heat hits three digits.

I’ve lived in San Diego since 2005, and yet I’ve only been to Palm Springs twice on business-related activities. So when the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) proposed to the change to get an introductory look at all that Palm Springs has to offer the LGBT traveler, I leaped at the opportunity.

Five Must-Sees in Palm Springs

Author: , April 9th, 2015

Palm SpringsPalm Springs’ heyday may have begun with the early movie and TV stars, but the town’s gay renaissance began in the ‘80s, when gay Angelenos started buying the mid-century modern homes in a then seedy downtown. Today, Palm Springs is a stylish and popular weekend getaway from September through May, and never more glorious than it is right now. When LA is a “chilly” 68-70° in the winter and spring, Angelenos head to sunny Palm Springs for warm swimming pool weather. It’s a popular gay destination, but it’s a relatively small city, with a population of under 50,000 residents. The few gay bars and clubs it has are often deserted midweek, even in season, and when the temperature soars in the summer, the town really slows down.

PSP Inset http—www.flickr.com-photos-25063318@N00-But that slow pace is at the heart of Palm Springs’ appeal. This is a place to go when you want to do little more than relax by the pool, under a stunning vista of mountains and desert. There’s also tennis, golf, and just enough other active, cultural, outdoors and shopping distractions for those who can’t sit still, and a large concentration of mid-century modern design, making it a world capital for those who share that fetish.

If you want to see the town packed to its Modernist gills with gays, then head there during its top homo event: the White Party, April 24-27, a long-running annual party that bills itself as the world’s largest gay music festival, and whose Sunday afternoon T dance is just fabulous. Before you head to the desert, be sure to review our top picks below and DOWNLOAD a PDF of our recently updated Palm Springs Travel Guide, for recently updated recommendations on where to stay, eat, play/meet for FREE. Oh, and pack plenty of sunblock!

The Dinah Celebrates 25 Years

Author: , January 23rd, 2015

The Dinah

Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend is turning twenty-five and taking the event to a new zenith.

A quarter-century ago, Mariah Hanson did more than just kick-start her Dinah. She also and most importantly launched what would become her enduring legacy to both the city of Palm Springs and the LGBT community.

From a small, one-night event at a Palm Springs museum with 1,500 participants twenty-five years ago, to booking lavish locations at deluxe hotels over five days of epic pool parties and world-class entertainment with some 15,000-plus attendees and major corporate sponsors today, Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend has evolved into one of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley’s largest tourism boosters and undisputed biggest lesbian event of its kind in the world.

The natural symbiosis shared by these two iconic LGBT Mecca has continuously been a match made in heaven. More than a tradition The Dinah Shore Weekend has over these past 25 years (and counting) become a Palm Springs institution and one of the city’s most popular spring attractions.

As one of the early pioneers, the Dinah has become one of Palm Spring staple events sharing the spotlight with the likes of the Coachella Music Festival, Stagecoach, The Palm Springs International Film Festival, the BNP Paribas Open Trophy, and the PGA and LPGA golf tournaments -all intrinsically linked to the famous desert community.

In the span of twenty five years The Dinah has cemented its status as not only an event the entertainment industry’s most elite go to but also as a trendsetting event that music industry insiders watch and jockey to book their artists’ performances.

It is the only acknowledged all-girl party that features such a phenomenal line-up of talent to ever to perform at a lesbian event. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Colbie Caillat, India Arie, The Pussycat Dolls, Kesha and more recently Iggy Azalea, are just a few examples of major recording artists that headlined the epic event while still “unknown” and then systematically went on to hit international superstardom.

While The Dinah has been spearheading music careers, it has, most importantly, also been transforming lives and making a difference in and for the LGBT community. Offering an unparalleled one-of-a-kind experience for myriads of women who come every year from all over the world to enjoy the freedom to be who they truly are without fearing the judgment of others, and gain, as well, a tremendous amount of self worth.

The event has also been serving as a platform to mobilize the LGBT community around humanitarian projects and social issues, famously partnering in previous years with a variety of activist associations and charity organizations such as GLAAD, HRC, NOH8, Love is Louder, Equality California, and The Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center among others.

The Dinah has certifiably come to represent an ever-growing movement that has crossed over to mainstream bringing more and more visibility to the lesbian community – one that had never existed before.

As the largest and biggest lesbian event in the world, The Dinah has been continuously delivering a spectacular slate of legendary headliners, rising pop stars and celebrities alike. And 2015 will be no different.

Now ready to soar to new heights, the 25th installment of The Dinah is already expected to be one of the major highlights of the 2015 Palm Springs festival season.

Already confirmed to headline the 25th Anniversary of the Dinah are international Billboard Top 40 superstars Meghan Trainor and Christina Perri; as well as pop music’s new “it” girls Bebe Rexha and Ivy Levan; and old school legends Crystal Waters and Rose Royce.

Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend is not just breaking grounds; it is making history!

And as the celebration of the milestone Silver Anniversary is already in full swing, past Dinah alumni are all proudly stepping in front of the camera to send in their best birthday wishes!

Visit the Dinah site here – it starts on April 1st!

Relax in Gay Palm Springs

Author: , January 12th, 2015

Palm Springs

If you’ve never been to Palm Springs, you can be forgiven for thinking it’s a sleepy, geriatric town. But scratch the surface and you’ll find a desert oasis with cool midcentury architecture, temperatures that encourage minimal attire, and a higher concentration of queer accommodations than almost any place on earth.

Just a two-hour drive from LAX, Palm Springs was practically built as a gay celebrity retreat. Rock Hudson and his supposed lover George Nader decamped there for alone time, as did Liberace, Tab Hunter, and Hunter’s sometime boyfriend Anthony Perkins. Along with some hip heteros, Tinseltown’s gay talent created a slick image for the desert town: Few places so close to Hollywood offered much-needed privacy, far from the madding crowd, yet remained a stone’s throw from glitzy amenities–and lots of sparkling swimming pools.

When long-distance courting the man who would become my husband, I lured him to Palm Springs on several occasions, usually to the Ace Hotel (AceHotel.com), a gay-owned and gay-popular (but not gay-exclusive) resort with sleepaway-camp-themed designs. He loved the heat, the margaritas, and the private outdoor patios, and those trips may have been a tiny factor in his decision to relocate to Los Angeles. It was in Palm Springs, in a lovely rented house shaped around a courtyard pool, that our family and friends gathered for a week before our autumn nuptials.

In keeping with his tradition of presenting the hottest new breakout talent and artists poised for super stardom, White Party Palm Springs founder and producer Jeffrey Sanker unveiled initial names for this year’s 25th anniversary celebration. White Party Palm Springs is the largest gay dance music festival in the world, happening April 25-28, 2014.

2013 American Music Award winner for “Best New Artist,” Ariana Grande will perform live at the Saturday night main event at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Fresh off a Presidential appearance at the White House, singer and actress Ariana Grande gained international notoriety as a pop vocalist when her single, “The Way” from her debut studio album, Yours Truly (2013) became a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA.

Sanker commented, “As we commemorate White Party’s 25th Anniversary we look ahead to the future, Ariana Grande is one of today’s fastest rising superstars and is destined for pop icon status.”
