When we travel from coast to coast we usually do not know where to dine to have a memorable dining experience. Once we find a fabulous place, we go back again and again and again. We have been traveling to Palm Springs, California for 15 years and from the first time we went there we found one of our favorite restaurants in the entire country. Melvyn’s Restaurant which is located in the Ingleside Inn in downtown Palm Springs. We first heard about the restaurant on the television program, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”.

melvyns to use interiorWe knew that we had to try it out which we did 15 years ago and since then we have been back dozens of times. Mel Haber, the owner is a tremendously good looking gentleman and has owned the restaurant for 41 years. The decor and menu has not changed in all those years. If something is perfect, then why change it? It is like stepping back in 1950 and 1960’s Hollywood ! Large photos of Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and all of the glorious Movie stars from the past are on the walls. Usually while we are dining there, we always see a celebrity or two.

Brian Ellis, the Maitre d’ has been there since day one. He has won numerous awards as being one of the finest Maitre d’s in the country. He knows how to do things right and to make every guest have a most memorable dining experience. He has made friends with many of his thousands of diners including us. Travelers to Palm Springs always return again and again to Melvyn’s.

Owner Mel Haber is one of the nicest gentleman that we have ever met. He has contributed back to the community in so many ways. He has written two books on his personal experiences in operating his Inn and restaurant. He is a celebrity in his own right and has a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

mel haberMelvyn’s Restaurant is located in the Ingleside Inn which Mel has also owned for 41 years. Over the years, the Inn has become a magnet for Hollywood’s elite, U.S. Presidents, royalty, aristocrats, captains of industry and celebrities visiting Palm Springs. According to Wikipedia, his guests have included Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Marlon Brando, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Marie Shriver, Sylvester Stallone, Liza Minnelli, Liberace, Jerry Lewis, Barry Manilow, Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Rita Hayworth, Pat Boone, Debbie Reynolds, Larry King, John Travolta, Sidney Sheldon, David Hasselhoff, President Gerald Ford, George Hamilton and celebrity travel columnists, Donald Pile and Ray Williams and dozens and dozens of other celebrities.

For those readers who have never been to Palm Springs or are not going to be there in the immediate future, Mel Haber has given us one of his favorite recipes to share with our readers that he has on the menu.

VEAL INGLESIDE
– for Two people-

3 ounces of veal cutlet pounded until thin. Put in pan 2 ounces of peanut oil until hot. Flip both sides of veal into flour until lightly dusted. Whip one egg in a bowl, dip veal into egg batter, saute veal on each side 20 seconds until light brown.

Remove veal from pan and throw oil out. Put veal back into the same pan. Use 2 ounces of sherry wine. Reduce for 1 minute. Add 2 ounces of demi-glaze.

Cut 1/4 of an avocado fanned and put on top of veal. Cover with 2 ounces of mousseline sauce. Mousseline sauce is made with 8 ounces of heavy whipped cream combined with 4 ounces of hollandaise sauce (all whipped together). Preparation time: 6 minutes.

Palm Springs Not As Popular With Lesbian Travelers?

What’s abundantly obvious is Palm Springs is a popular destination for gay male tourists. What’s maybe less well known is the region is not so sought out by lesbians. In fact, Palm Springs tied with New Orleans and Miami for the No. 15 spot for top gay male travel destinations in the United States and Canada, ranking ahead of Denver, Portland, Oregon and Toronto, according to a November 2015 survey conducted by Community Marketing & Insights, a gay and lesbian marketing research firm.

The survey polled 3,772 self-identified members of the LGBT community and 412 respondents said they had come to Palm Springs for leisure travel.

While among lesbians, Palm Springs barely ranked in the top 20 with only 7 percent of gay women reported having visited Palm Springs for an overnight trip in the last 12 months. “Women are more likely to be traveling in rural America and national park America,” David Paisley, senior research director at CMI, told the Desert Business Association recently. “They tend to not be so urban focused.”

Gay Palm Springs

With cold weather approaching in Chicago now is the time to take a trip to the desert paradise of gay Palm Springs, California. The name is said to come from Spanish explorers who described it as being the palm of God’s hand. As a tourist there is a lot to grab onto.

American Airlines has direct flights to this balmy destination from Chicago. Just walking through the open ceiling airport warms the soul as the dry heat and palm trees are in stark contrast to the Windy City.

There are peak times to visit Palm Springs throughout the year to center around events. For example there is an International Film Festival in January that grows bigger every year. The White Party for gays and the Dinah Shore Weekend for lesbians are both held in April with huge numbers of people. Although Pride is practically every day in this town it officially arrives the first weekend in November with a festival paired with it to celebrate.

While over a dozen new hotels have opened in the past two years, the private resorts are the place to be and be seen. Choosing the right resort can make or break a trip to gay Palm Springs. There is a variety to suit almost every taste like one specifically for the Bear community or couples who travel together.

City Sundays: Palm Springs

Hey all,

Welcome to our weekly series on the blog and our Facebook travel groups – City Sundays. Each week we’ll select a different LGBT friendly city to talk about, and we’ll invite our innkeeper and travel agent/tour operator friends to come talk with us about it as well.

Palm Springs is truly a year-round destination – though it gets a bit hot in the summer days, it’s gorgeous at night; and it stays relatively warm in the winter. It’s also one of the gayest cities per capita in the US, with thousands of LGBT folks who have moved there from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Palm Springs is filled with LGBT accommodations, as well as clubs, restaurants and bars. But there’s lots to do outdoors here too, including desert jeep tours, hiking, and the famous tram.

Have you ever been? What did you do while you were there?

Do you wanna go?

Third Day in Palm Springs

Author: , May 2nd, 2015

Palm Springs - Image by Ken WilliamsThere’s more to Palm Springs than sunbathing in the nude at a Warm Sands gay men’s resort or dining out in downtown. If you like the great outdoors, the mountains and desert nearby offer hiking, off-roading and much more.

Tuesday proved to be our day for being outdoors. What a cardio workout I got, collecting my targeted 10,000 daily steps with no problem!

Our party of four visited the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which attracts half-a-million visitors per year. The two tram cars hold up to 80 visitors each, whisking them up Chino Canyon from an elevation of 2,643 feet to 8,516 feet above sea level … in a breathtaking 10 minutes while the gently rotating cars provide a panoramic view of the Coachella Valley all the way down to the Salton Sea. Be prepared for the temperature and wind shock: It was about 90 degrees in the city, but about 54 degrees and windy at the top of San Jacinto Mountain. I was ready with a fleece vest, but our friend from Madrid, Spain was freezing in a tank top. Our guide from the Palm Springs Visitors Bureau kindly bought him a sweatshirt.

Make sure to wear proper shoes, too. Gym shoes or hiking boots are recommended. One mother slipped on the slippery sand and rocks, and I grabbed her by the arms and prevented her from taking a nasty fall. Her family showed their gratitude by asking me to take their family portrait from atop the mountain. LOL!

Second Day in Palm Springs

Palm Springs - photo by Ken WilliamsPalm Springs, California has been a popular getaway for movies stars since the golden era of Hollywood. And what better way to learn about the desert playground’s glamorous past than by taking a “Gay Icons Tour” led by gay guide Bob Gross in an open red Jeep as part of the Desert Adventures Eco-Tours & Events.

Bob is affable and attentive as he shifts gears and chats on his mike with our party of four. If you want to take a photograph or a brief video, he will let you. Just ask. We were especially fascinated by the former homes of Liberace and Marilyn Monroe, and he pulled over and let us do our thing.

The Liberace house was a mid-century modern classic with a mailbox shaped like a grand piano and white marble statues of humans and lions. Then there was another home which Liberace owned, on the corner of Alejo and Belardo, where the flamboyant entertainer once hosted lavish party for his European boys and where he died.

First Day in Palm Springs

Author: , April 15th, 2015

Trio in Palm Springs - Photo by Ken WilliamsPalm Springs, California is a world unto itself, a famous getaway for Hollywood celebrities and world leaders, and now the home to a thriving LGBT community.

Often hailed as California’s ultimate desert playground, Palm Springs is famous around the globe for its annual White Party and The Dinah, two destination events in April that caters to the gay and lesbian communities. All year around, there is something fabulous to do in the desert, though tourism slows down during the dog days of summer when the heat hits three digits.

I’ve lived in San Diego since 2005, and yet I’ve only been to Palm Springs twice on business-related activities. So when the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) proposed to the change to get an introductory look at all that Palm Springs has to offer the LGBT traveler, I leaped at the opportunity.
