NC: Raleigh’s First Out Festival Today Focuses On Unity

With music, speeches and plenty of food, Raleigh’s gay community hopes to promote a message of unity Saturday at an inaugural downtown street festival.

Gay and lesbian activists have talked for years about starting a local festival, said Bobby Hilburn, director of the LGBT Center of Raleigh. The vision will come to life with OutRaleigh, an all-day celebration at City Plaza on Fayetteville Street.

“We hope we can all grow together and reach out across any lines that may be there,” Hilburn said. “We live and work in the same city. We want the same visibility and rights as everybody else.”
