New Year’s in Berlin – Globetrotter Girls

Berlin - Dani

My first Polaroid of 2017 is coming to you from Germany’s capital where I escaped to after spending the Holidays with my family. While I came to Berlin mainly to get some work done and catch up with friends, I managed to fit in quite a few fun activities – like visiting several of the city’s amazing Christmas markets, which I hadn’t done in over ten years.

I have to admit that it felt a bit awkward at first in light of the recent terror attack, but I decided to adapt the ‘We won’t let terrorists ruin this joyful time of year for us’ attitude that the Berliners showed, who kept flocking to the Christmas markets.

Other than Christmas markets, I went on a bar crawl in Kreuzberg and took a friend who passed through town to the observation deck of the Park Inn hotel for a panoramic view of Berlin, climbed the 285 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the Victory Column and revisited the East Side Gallery, the longest still standing piece of the Berlin Wall which has been painted with murals by international artists. Note to self: Leave open air viewing platforms for summer visits to Berlin – the biting cold winter air up on top of both structures was brutal.

GymWe all know the life cycle of a New Year’s resolution: a dream in December, a fresh start in January…and a broken promise by February. But travel isn’t exercise, or dieting. It’s transformative and fun and interesting and educational. Whether it’s the trip of a lifetime or just a long weekend away, travel gets you out of the daily routine and offers a new perspective. Even better, you can combine your trip with another resolution.

Want to get in better shape? A health spa can help jumpstart a new exercise regimen. Learn a new skill? There’s no shortage of learning vacations. Volunteer more of your time? You can find do-good opportunities all over the globe. Or, if you just want to unplug, off-the-grid places do still exist (for now, anyway). So make 2013 the year that you resolve to go globetrotting…and stick to it.

MuseumUniversities, Art Museums as well as the Smithsonian in Washington D. C. offers a wild variety of trips all over the world. Just go to their websites to see their listings. You can get in on the ground floor when traveling this way as they offer group tours and everything is taken care of ahead of time. Usually you get to see things that other travelers don’t get to see.

Do you really want to do something completely different than what you are normally into when traveling ? What about Alaska? or Wyoming? or Montana? Large cities and gay resort cities are always fun but sometimes it is a great idea to just get away from it all and try something really new and different.

beach_dayFor those who have a very stressful life or career sometimes it is best to slow down and just relax when traveling. Go to the beach or a cabin in the mountains in Colorado far away from anybody.

If you really want to start exercising then by all means go somewhere that has gym facilities and go for it. Beef up that body and then stick to your regimen for the rest of the year. Most gay resort cities have health spas and gyms that can be used for a nominal fee.

Eiffel Tower, ParisWhat about learning a new language? Nothing like going directly to the country that you want to learn their language. Most of us don’t need an excuse to visit Paris, but the chance to hone your French might just provide that extra justification. The famous Sorbonne offers short-term immersion courses, as does Alliance Francaise, the organization dedicated to spreading Francophone culture around the world.

Italy, Spain and Germany are also great places to visit as well. Even England has a completely different spoken as we do here in the United States. We have many friends who have traveled to England for 6 months and came back with one of the most beautiful London accents ever!

So many of us has a tendency to get into a rut when traveling. We go back to the same place all the time. We all really need to broaden our horizons and go to next places sometimes. It is so comforting to return to a place year after year after year, but we all do need to change our ideas on traveling and what we are traveling for.

Donald and RayThere is no better place to look for accommodations when traveling than They are simply THE place to check out before you take off.

Always remember to have fun when traveling, meet new people and talk to everyone!
