NYC Gay Pride: Seven Things You Can’t Miss

Author: , May 21st, 2016

NYC Gay Pride

We’re already super stoked about this year’s NYC Gay Pride. The world’s biggest LGBTI festival takes place next month, from 19-26 June, with this year’s theme being ‘Equality Needs You.’ Managing Director Chris Frederick says the theme ‘serves as a reminder of the continuing fight for full equality and the effect a single individual can have on their world.’

Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company, adds: ‘Whether it’s in the West Village – the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement – Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, the East Village, Williamsburg or Jackson Heights, we encourage visitors and residents to participate in the iconic and vibrant Pride events taking place throughout New York City this June and July.’

Here, we look at seven parties, events and activities not to be missed from this year’s jam-packed lineup…

1 NYC Gay Pride March

The March on 26 June begins in Murray Hill at 36th Street and Fifth Avenue and culminates at Christopher Street and Greenwich Street in the West Village. Led by grand marshals Jazz Jennings (the youngest grand marshal in NYC Gay Pride history), Subhi Nahas (co-founder of the first LGBTI magazine in Syria), and Cecilia Chung (an internationally-recognized LGBTI advocate), the NYC March is the largest pride march in the country and is expected to have more than 2 million people lining the route.

Tel Aviv Gay PrideISRAEL: Gay Tel Aviv Pride 2014
by Tami Bibring
One of the major events in Gay Tel Aviv’s life is the annual pride parade, taking place every year at mid- June, right in the middle of the hot Israeli summer. Over the last couples of years, Tel Aviv parade has become on of the most popular parades in the world, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the globe for an entire weekend of pride, parties, sun, sea and fun. Gay Tel Aviv pride parade has changed over the years: from a small, scared, underground procession to a huge event, with more than 100000 participants from the entire sexual spectrum: lesbians, gays, bisexuals, queers, trans and even straights! This sharp increase of numbers has also changed the parade’s character, with many disputes between some groups of the LGBT community, who think the parade is now too commercial, and misses out on the real important points it stands for.

Nubble Lighthouse - Ogunquit, MaineUSA, MAINE: Ogunquit, Maine: A Beautiful Place by the Sea
by Linda Zietz
I’ve traveled to many places, but had never been to Provincetown, Massachusetts. So when my partner Ellen and I planned our first vacation together in October 2009, that’s where she suggested we go. She said, “You’ll love P-town. It’s a happy place.” Ogunquit BeachEllen was right. We found a rental online and went to Provincetown for a week. It’s a wonderful, joyous town. I loved everything about it — the view of the dunes as you
approach the town; the beautiful beaches; interesting shops; great restaurants; the liveliness of Commercial Street.

It’s safe to say we were not let down. After a five hour drive from the capitol we made our first pit-stop and pitched our tent by the sea in the bottom of a picturesque fjord where we watched the sun not quite go down before rising again. The following days were spent exploring the lenght and breadth of the Westfjords. We visited the Rau\0xF0isandur red sand beach, Europe’s largest birdcliff, Latrabjarg, home of millions of birds, we ate beautiful, locally sourced food took numerous dips in natural geothermal pools and ventured all the way to the outdoor swimming pool affectionately referred to as The Pool at the End of the World where we spent hours watching the sea from the pool, spotting seals and seabirds.

Reykjavik, IcelandICELAND: Planning a Same-sex Wedding In Iceland
by Birna Hronn Bjornsdottir
Gay weddings have been legalised in Iceland since June 2010, but unlike some countries that have legalised same-sex marriage only to ban it just a couple of months later, Iceland wholeheartedly embraces the concept. In fact, Iceland’s serving Prime Minister at the time, Johanna Sigur\0xF0ardottir and her partner, Jonina Leosdottir were the first couple to turn their civil union into a marriage. You cannot get much more committed to a policy than that. There are some specific requirements for getting married here, including a certificate of marital status, if your country does them, which needs to be produced eight weeks before the Big Day.

If you’re into food, restaurants, new tastes and exciting adventures, Tel Aviv should definitely come across your culinary travel plans. The best way to get to know the genuine roots of the Israeli kitchen (assuming you don’t have relatives in here, who can cook you traditional food) is to wander around gay Tel Aviv streets and markets, and to taste everything you can.

USA, VERMONT: Newport News
by MK Bateman
Newport, Vermont is going through quite a renaissance. What was once a sleepy town on the Quebec border is quickly becoming a boomtown, thanks to nearby Jay Peak Resort and an unprecedented investment of money from both the public and private sectors. Newport is situated in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom on Lake Memphremagog, a scenic glacial lake roughly 30 miles in length; with one end in Vermont the other in Quebec. Local folklore even mentions that it has its own lake monster, called Memphre. During the winter the lake is a frozen giant, perfect for ice fishing and skating. While in the summer, it has a wonderful assortment of outdoor activities (which I’ll be writing about in the coming months!). The fact that Newport is just 30 minutes from Jay Peak makes it the perfect spot to mix up your ski trip with a little shopping getaway.

Diversity RulesUSA, VERMONT: Traveling to Stowe
by Robert Saldarini
Even those with a passion for travel may pause to plan a regional trip in winter. The northeast winters can offer hideous airport and highway conditions. A weekend may be spent sleeping on a dirty carpet at LaGuardia or stuck for hours burning gas on the Thruway. Still, before you pull a movie from your DVD collection as a weekend experience, why not get away by train? With all due respect to the absolutely wonderful resorts in New York State, think about taking a trip to Vermont. If a winter outdoor activity is a short-list item, within the beauty of Stowe, activities ranging from snowboarding to dog-sledding makes a day spectacular. Nonetheless, if you are more ‘cozy by the fire’ by day, Stowe, VT generates many exciting gatherings to keep you well entertained at night.

Bed & BreakfastTRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Owning Your Own B&B
by Donald & Ray
In our travels from coast to coast, staying in Bed and Breakfasts, we are always hearing other guests who remark how much fun it must be to own their own Bed and Breakfast. We have babysat a few Bed and Breakfasts, and it is kind of like having your niece or nephew over to your house for a day or two and then wanting them to get out quickly. Bed & BreakfastOr like having out-of-town or out-of-state family or friends staying with you for a few days, and then wanting them to get out quickly. It is NOT all fun and games, owning and operating a Bed and Breakfast. It IS a business, you know! Sure, you get to meet a lot of very nice people, and many of them you will remember forever, and many will remember you forever too. Then there are the guests from HELL that you wish that you had never given a room to.

Diversity RulesSpring Ahead!
by Robert Saldarini
Okay, enough snow, enough ice, and enough cold: New York, we are over it! So let’s have warm thoughts and start designing a perfect summer vacation. March is a great time to plan a trip. Most of us have already picked vacation dates at work; so, let’s find a place to go. Of course, the first step is a balance of desire and budget. Okay, are you traveling alone or with someone else? Many people love to travel on their own. Actually, vacation planning doesn’t go much beyond place and transportation because the lone-traveler is a free-agent during the time away. Nonetheless, when traveling alone there are no splitting costs. If you’re a person who loves to share the travel experience with a friend or companion, you can save some money, but dialog expectations and goals before making any final arrangements. Be careful of ‘gay travel sites’ as my experience identifies great itineraries accompanied by premium pricing.

amtrak 1TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Springtime for Traveling
by Donald & Ray, Gay Travelers
Every season is a great time for traveling but one of our favorite seasons is Spring, when most families children are busy with school and having to work their daily jobs. Most of them have to take off traveling in the summer. However we can take off anytime we want. Jet off April in Paris, or that is too far, then April in the Rockies (as Colorado), or anywhere between the coasts of the country. Many accommodations have reduced prices right now as well as auto rentals. Even cruise ships are having special prices going on now, it is indeed the time to travel. Whether traveling a few miles or out of the country, now is the time to travel. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to travel during each season and take advantage of the sights and sounds and the temperatures of different regions in the country.

Rotorua Geyser - Guysers GaystayExploring Rotorua, New Zealand
by Peter, Guysers Gaystay, Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand
New Zealand – “the land of the long white cloud”. The country at the bottom of the globe that everyone thinks belongs to Australia and has more sheep than people. It is a country that is promoted as ‘clean and green’ with incredible scenery, diverse landscapes and multi-cultural cities. It’s a land of mountains and lakes, volcanoes and beaches, cities and forests. It’s a country that seems so far away, yet is a country that most people have on their top 10 list of places to visit. New Zealand is a country that is very liberated, open-minded and accepting, where Civil Unions are common and Gay Marriage legislation is soon to be passed through Government.

map2Cycling In Paris – The Essentials…
by Mark Binmore
In theory, zipping around in lovely heels – obligatory good-looking Frenchman by your side – sounds like the perfect way to explore the City of Lights by bicycle, right? In reality there’s a little more cycling savvy needed to make the most of cycling in Paris. Here’s my checklist when hiring a bike via the Vélib’ rent-a-bike system: 1. Before jumping on a Vélib’ bike, always ‘test before you ride.’ I like to give the tires a kick to check that they’re pumped up, and in good nick. Spin the chain, test the brakes, make sure the seat stays at the desired height and check the bell. Get into the habit of performing a mini MOT before you jump on a bike.

Key West harborKey West: Do You Want it Normal Hot or Super Hot?
by David Hardy
Warm your soul with thoughts of a destination that’s hot, gay and beautiful: the island of Key West, a tiny full stop off the southernmost tip of Florida. I first went to KW in 1988 (a few days after Hurricane Gilbert brushed the island, so it wasn’t looking its best) and it got me addicted from that very first date. I now visit at least once a year, sometimes 3 times, even though we live in the UK – but it’s definitely worth the travel trek and here’s 3 reasons why.

Key West Fantasy Fest
by Fran Kramer, Diversity Rules Magazine
The southernmost city in the continental US has been a destination for gay travelers for decades. But what is it that makes it a gay travel destination? Is it a “gay” place? Is it because gays go there? Is it because gays live there? These answers are unsatisfyingly vague, but they contain a grain of truth. Gays show up and fix the place up a little, and that makes gays want to go there, in a reinforcing cycle. But I believe that it’s the party that makes the gay. I want to tell you about a celebration that takes the gay and turns it up to eleven. It’s Fantasy Fest. . If you think that Key West isn’t really gay, just go down and get a load of that week long party. They do what the gays do best – throw a fabulous party, and they do it on a city wide scale.

Washington DC Gay TravelWashington, DC: Cherry Blossoms and Beyond
by Robert Saldarini, Diversity Rules Magazine
If Oz has its poppies, no one can deny Washington, D.C., its cherry blossoms. Of course, exactly when these pink blooms burst is a moving target; so, nature gives a wide window of opportunity. This year the Cherry Blossom Festival starts on March 20, and continues through April 14. A spring visit to D.C. should be on everyone’s bucket-list; yet, without good planning, you can miss some exciting adventures. Therefore, grab a D.C. map and your iPad to plot a course and make some reservations.

SOUTH AFRICA: Traveling in “The Drak” (Leave Your Daily Hell)
Initially, the only reason I wanted to visit South Africa’s Drakensberg district is because I knew it was a popular gateway to Lesotho. CO: Vail’s Up and Coming Gay Ski Week

Author: , October 29th, 2011

Colorado’s most famous gay ski weeks are held in Aspen and Telluride, in mid-January and late February respectively, but over the past few years, Vail Gay Ski Week has begun drawing serious crowds. The gathering takes place in late March and includes the usual mix of fun on the slopes and hobnobbing back around the fireplaces and hot tubs. In winter, skiing and snowboarding may be the region’s big draws, but it would be unfair to describe Vail and nearby Beaver Creek as mere ski towns. These scenic communities in the heart of the Colorado Rockies offer plenty of diversions.

Another misconception about Vail (www.vail.com) is that it’s a crowded, freeway-side ski park. True, the resort’s Front Side can get busy on weekends and does overlook Vail’s bustling villages and I-70, and this facility is one of the largest in North America, with some 5,300 skiable acres and nearly 200 runs. But there are many places on Vail Mountain to escape from the crowds, and skiers of all abilities will find challenging, varied terrain.

For more solitude, ascend to the upper slopes of Vail’s Front Side to access the fabled Back Bowls, a glorious — and vast — swath of less-trammeled runs that descend down the back of the mountain. From there, additional lifts carry those seeking truly secluded terrain into Blue Sky Basin, a stunning patch of wilderness developed by the resort in 2000. In reality, from the majority of Vail’s ski runs, you can’t see a single mile of freeway or village infrastructure. Just avoid the Front Side, which is possible as long as you’re comfortable with intermediate terrain.
