Liverpool Pride Starts Fundraising Early

Gay Pride in LiverpoolLiverpool Pride organisers have said they will begin fundraising efforts for next summer’s event in December of this year to ensure the day remains free.

This is the earliest the event organisers have had to begin collecting money in the city’s history.

Liverpool City Council has said financial constraints may mean it is forced to cut funding to festivals in the city, though organisers say they will continue to work with the authority.

Liverpool’s Homotopia 2011 Begins November 1st

Homotopia 2011Liverpool’s gay arts festival Homotopia kicks off next week with the theme of ‘Cruising For Art’. The festival will showcase an “array of the queer, the extravagant, the bold, the unexpected and the daring” with theatre, dance, film, cabaret and discussions.

Visitors will be able to admire exhibitions including ‘Savage Style’, a collection of Lily Savage’s dresses, and ‘Pin Ups’, a selection of portraits by Sadie Lee and Matthew Stradling.

Dance highlights include the premier of ‘Cruising, Clubbing, F**king’ and ‘The Male Species’, a dance trilogy.

UK: Report Urges Official Recognition of Liverpool’s Gay Quarter

A Liverpool council report says that the city’s gay quarter should be officially recognised. A 12,000 Pound consultation ended in May after the area’s residents, businesses and visitors were asked how the area could be improved.

Councillors will consider the report next week, which says the city could reap economic benefits by turning the Stanley Street area into a world-class gay destination.

Recommendations include a gay hotel, bars and shops to appeal to a wider gay market, a new public square and the creation of a community trust.

UK: Liverpool Pride Announced for August

Liverpool Gay PrideDust off those Rainbow Flags and get ready to celebrate all things LGBT once more, Liverpool Pride will take place on Saturday, 6th August.

With 2010’s festival a huge success, attracting over 21,000 people, plans are in place to ensure an even bigger celebration for 2011.

This FREE event will transform Liverpool’s gay quarter into a massive party venue. Following a march around the city centre, the Dale Street area will be closed off all day for the glittering Pride street party including stages, a wide range of live entertainment, musical acts, street performers, outrageous sideshows and a host of market and refreshment stalls.

Second Liverpool Pride Planned for August

LIVERPOOL Pride has announced a date for this year’s gay, lesbian and bisexual festival. Organisers said the city’s second colourful festival will take place on Saturday, August 6.

While Government funding is yet to be agreed they said there were “positive noises” from Liverpool city council. James Davies, Liverpool Pride trustee director, said: “We had a really successful day last year. We are planning for this year’s festival to go ahead and to be free.

“Nothing has been agreed yet in terms of funding from the council but we are working with commercial sponsors to raise money to fund it.”
Liverpool’s first Pride Festival saw 21,000 people flocking to specially themed art exhibitions, sports tournaments and a rainbow circus in the city centre.

Liverpool to Promote Gay Village to Gay/Lesbian Travelers

Liverpool is to promote and develop its gay quarter to cash in on the so-called ‘pink pound’. The council has hired a planning consultancy to look at how the city can be marketed as a worldwide tourist destination for gay travellers.

Liverpool’s gay quarter centres around Stanley Street and pubs and bars have sprung up in the last decade and urban planning consultancy Feria Urbanism has been asked to come up with a vision towards making the gay scene one of the best in the country.

Cllr Nick Small, cabinet member for employment and skills, told the Liverpool Daily Post: “The area around Stanley Street has developed over time to be the city’s gay quarter although there are many businesses there which cater for all communities. We want Liverpool to be known as an inclusive city.”
