Key West Lesbian Resort Opening Doors to Everyone

Author: , November 27th, 2010

Heather Carruthers, Pearl's RainbowGuests lounge around the pool at Pearl’s Rainbow, soaking up the sunshine and tropical vibes typical of a Southernmost guesthouse. Not a man is in sight – and that’s the way these vacationers like it. But over this Thanksgiving weekend, Key West’s only lesbian-exclusive resort is going “all welcome.”

The decision was made public about the same time Pearl’s Rainbow was honored in October by Curve, the best-selling lesbian magazine, as the guesthouse that had the greatest impact on lesbian culture over the past 20 years.

Pearl’s Rainbow’s lesbian owner, Heather Carruthers, said it was a business decision based on tough economic realities, the request of some lesbian guests who would like to bring male family members or friends — and on some good news. Lesbians are being more accepted and feel more comfortable in the mainstream these days.

Key Biscane, Florida: Like a Different World

Author: , November 10th, 2010

Gay Biscayne Key, FloridaOn a beautiful, yet chilly Sunday afternoon, I decided to jump in my car and drive to Key Biscayne. Many people have told me about its splendor, but since I relocated to South Florida, I had yet to experience it. The journey took about 45 minutes, but as you cross over the Rickenbacker Causeway, you to feel like you are entering a tropical paradise, far removed from the hustle and bustle of South Beach.

As the skyscrapers of Downtown Miami fade into the background, you begin to realize how beautiful and lush Key Biscayne is. Hurricane Andrew virtually destroyed the island, but years of hard work and dedication have restored it.

The seven mile long barrier island, just across Biscayne Bay from Coral Gables, is home to Crandon Park and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Key Biscayne offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities including bicycling, tennis, golf, fishing, kite boarding, windsurfing, boating, sailing and water bikes. Visitors can play golf on one of the top municipal courses in the United States – the Links at Key Biscayne.

Gay Friendly Tampa/St. Petersburg Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, and Vacation Rentals

Mansion House B&B - St. Petersburg, FloridaThe historic Mansion House I and MHII are mirror-image arts and crafts houses built in 1901-1904 – we’re celebrating our centennial in 2001! We’re a traditional B&B inn in the heart of beautiful St. Petersburg’s Old Northeast and the arts and entertainment district, The QuARTer. Just two blocks from one of the loveliest natural harbors, the Vinoy Basin and the Renaissance Vinoy Resort, Straub, and Vinoy Parks – the perfect place to see the sunrise, take a run, rollerblade, bike or walk.

Mansion House was the home of the first mayor of St. Peter, David Moffett. It was built by one of the movers and shakers of this area, A.F. Thomasson and his wife, Phoebe Mackie. MHII was built by Julia Kemp and her husband, a noted physician in town. Each room is furnished differently – mostly antiques and rich woods.

A few of our local attractions:

Straub and Vinoy Parks: A 5 minute stroll where open air concerts and festivals are held regularly.
Museum of Fine Arts: Providing outstanding examples of world art in an inviting, elegant setting.
St Petersburg Holocaust Museum: The fourth largest Holocaust museum in the country.
Fort Desoto Park: Besides the glistening 7-mile stretch of beach, the park offers outstanding opportunities to view wildlife.
