Miami’s Gay/Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Launches Gay Tourism Initiative

Miami Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of CommerceThere is no denying that tourism is the market driver of our South Florida economy. The loyal global LGBT market has continued to prop up our tax receipts and estimates project that we will spend in excess of $1.7 billion locally this year soaking up the sun and reveling in all great things our destination has to offer. The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) in partnership with the GMCVB, MBVCA, GMBHA, and the LGBT Visitor Center (sponsored by MetLife) have created the Pink Flamingo Hospitality Certification Program to ensure we do our best for our LGBT visitors.

The Pink Flamingo Hospitality Certification Program will be conducted by MDGLCC partner, YES Institute, the industry source for knowledge on gender and orientation. YES institute will provide one-hour educational workshops for hoteliers that address fears and misinformation that lead to discrimination by using a unique discussion method designed to turn “us vs. them” into just “us,” so no one is seen as an outsider.

So as several hoteliers across the country are presenting deals to lure gay newlyweds, Miami Beach hotels who are members of the MDGLCC will be taking it one step further. Several of them will be offering love birds complete gay-friendly packages that can guarantee no questions asked when guests show up for their king-bedded suite and no raised eyebrows for holding hands poolside. Any demands to make their guest feel at home will be met.

Out in Florida: Sawmill Campground

Author: , May 24th, 2010

Dade City, Fla.Trying to put a blanket description on Sawmill Campground isn’t an easy task. Some see the LGBT Pasco County camp- ground as rural getaway to enjoy nature; some see it as a destination to explore sexual fantasies; nudists see it as a chance to swim naked in a heated pool; and others see it as a chance to see A-list entertainment in a beautiful Florida setting. In short, Sawmill Campground caters to almost every demographic in the LGBT community.

“The Sawmill is the kind of place that is what you make it,” says Derek Sutherland, general manager. “We are a completely self-inclusive destination offering all the amenities of a full scale resort with the added benefit of enjoying the outdoors in a beautiful scenic location.”

The 100-plus-acre resort is in its 12th year and is owned, surprisingly, by two straight men – Phillip Godown and Michael Bubis. The two New York City natives are gay friendly, however, and saw the Sawmill as a business opportunity with a clearly defined niche market, according to Sutherland.
