New Site Details Cruising Areas in Canberra

CANBERRA landmarks, public toilets and even a community centre gym have been labelled gay “cruising” areas by a website aimed at homosexual and bisexual men.

The site, called Squirt.org, has identified 38 locations in the Canberra area.
General manager of the AIDS Action Council Andrew Burry said the practice was “centuries old. The use of ‘beats’ or ‘cruising areas’ was very common during Oscar Wilde’s time,” he said.

ACT Policing said there was no specific offence in the ACT for intercourse in public, but regardless of the genders involved, people who were caught could be charged with indecent exposure or offensive behaviour.

Gay CanberraWelcome to Canberra!

Our nation’s capital has plenty going on for the gay traveler who knows where to look. The smallish city of almost 350,000 has its own dedicated gay bar/nightclub, a local gay magazine and several other LGBT-owned businesses and social networks.

Locals describe Canberra’s gay scene as friendly and relaxed, ramping up annually in November for its SpringOut pride festival.

The Australian Capital Territory has progressive civil partnership laws, giving gay couples the ability to hold legally-binding ceremonies. Same-sex couples are also jointly allowed to adopt children, unlike in some other states.
