Club Lasta - Gay Belgrade

“Sweet dreams are made of this…Everybody is looking for something.”

It’s Saturday night in Belgrade and we’re drinking cocktails to 80’s beats at Mikser Garden. It’s a mix crowd of young and old. But one thing is for sure, the fashionable crowd is here. Some of the women look like models for Vogue. The men are stylish and confident. And Marija, the female DJ spinning the best of the 80’s, is drop-dead gorgeous.

It’s our second night in Mikser Garden, a summer al fresco bar that just opened this summer. It’s located right in the middle of Savamala, the cultural and creative center of the city. The “garden” is almost like an oasis in the urban jungle of Belgrade.

“The music is pretty loud here. Aren’t people complaining about the noise?”, I wondered.

Ever since I wrote about the top 13 Party Cities in Europe last year, a lot of people who read the piece have commented, messaged and tweeted telling me to check out Belgrade.

“They have epic parties in Belgrade!” “No Belgrade? Dude this list is rubbish,” they said.

This got me curious of course. And so when me and my friends, MM and Zan, planned our 3-week Balkans trip this summer we decided to fly to Belgrade as our first stop.

Our itinerary? Party all weekend.

Belgrade Celebrates First Gay Pride in Four Years

Author: , September 28th, 2014

Serbia Gay pride - TwitterSerbia is finally allowing a gay pride event to go forward in Belgrade.

Pink News reports:

Hundreds of people are taking part in the first Belgrade Pride parade permitted to go ahead in four years. The last time police allowed Belgrade Pride to go ahead was 2010, when it was marred by violent stand-offs with far-right extremists. Around 100 people were injured at the event, as extremists threw petrol bombs at the police and gay rights activists. The event has been cancelled every year since, with the 2011, 2012 and 2013 parades all being banned by authorities over fears of violence.

It’s great to see Pride finally conquer Fear in this European country.

Serbia Bans Belgrade Pride

Author: , September 28th, 2013

Belgrade Pride BannedFor the third year in a row, yesterday the Serbian government banned Belgrade Pride, citing security concerns over threats of violence by neo-Nazi groups who battled hundreds of riot police at Belgrade Pride 2010. After Prime Minister Ivica Dacic announced the ban on state television, activists marched on his office.

“After a long discussion on whether the march would pass without severe consequences, the security assessments indicated severe threats to public safety,” Dacic said after a three-hour meeting with security chiefs. “This is not a capitulation to the hooligans,” he said.

Gay Pride Flag San FranciscoOnce again, the Serbian Interior Ministry has announced plans to ban Belgrade’s Gay pride celebration, citing issues with violence. Passport Magazine reports:

Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman and London MEP Sarah Ludford has condemned the banning of Belgrade Pride for the second year running. Serbia’s Interior Ministry announced today that they would ban this year’s Pride, claiming concerns over public safety following threats of violence and intimidation from some groups.

Once again, the LGBT community is being punished for the violent acts of anti-gay groups in Serbia. Belgrade’s gay pride was also banned last year.
