Keith Haring bathroom Mural New York

It’s been a big year for Keith Haring. Twenty-four years after his death from AIDS, the celebrated New York artist was feted with a major retrospective at the de Young Musuem in San Francisco, along with a barrage of laudatory press. If he wasn’t canonized already, 2014 was the year he officially joined the greats.

Next year will see the restoration of one of Haring’s “lost” masterpieces: a mural he painted in the men’s bathroom at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center in New York’s West Village. Titled Once Upon a Time, the mural was completed nine months before Haring’s death in 1990, which makes its raucous sexual panorama all the more fearless and poignant. The room–and mural–have been closed for restoration since 2013.
