Oakland Pride Turns Away Leather Groups

Author: , September 1st, 2014

Leather FlagOakland’s first Pride parade is today, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, the leather community is not invited.

One thing you probably won’t find at Oakland’s first LGBT Pride Parade on Sunday: partially clad men in leather chaps. What you will find is the Jolly Trolly from Children’s Fairyland, pony rides, antique fire engines and singer/drummer Sheila E. Instead of kicking off with Dykes on Bikes, as is the tradition in San Francisco, Oakland’s parade starts with Tykes on Trikes. “We had some leather groups from San Francisco who wanted to come, and we politely declined. We want to keep this G-rated,” said Carlos Uribe, one of the organizers. “We don’t want to compete with San Francisco Pride, we just want to offer a more family-friendly, diverse celebration. Sort of an end-of-summer bookend to SF Pride.”

The city has hosted a Pride fest on and off since the 1990s, but the current incarnation started five years ago with the goal of eventually opening an LGBT community center. Last year, organizers polled the festival’s 30,000 attendees about what they’d like to see at future fests, and 80 percent said they wanted a parade. “We’re going to be the most family-friendly Pride parade anywhere, ever,” said Amber Todd, chair of Oakland Pride. “We’ll have something for everyone – gay, straight, pansexual, kids. My 75-year-old mother’s coming, and she’s as straight as the day is long.”

Serbia Bans Belgrade Pride

Author: , September 28th, 2013

Belgrade Pride BannedFor the third year in a row, yesterday the Serbian government banned Belgrade Pride, citing security concerns over threats of violence by neo-Nazi groups who battled hundreds of riot police at Belgrade Pride 2010. After Prime Minister Ivica Dacic announced the ban on state television, activists marched on his office.

“After a long discussion on whether the march would pass without severe consequences, the security assessments indicated severe threats to public safety,” Dacic said after a three-hour meeting with security chiefs. “This is not a capitulation to the hooligans,” he said.

Olympics Pride House Banned in Russia for 2014 Olympics

Author: , March 18th, 2012

Russia Olympics 2014 and the Pride HouseA judge in Russia has this week upheld the Ministry of Justice’s ban on organizing a Pride House for LGBT athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. In her decision, Svetlana Mordovina reiterated several of the claims that have motivated recent legislation to ban the distribution of gay “propaganda,” including that homosexuality threatens children and families and undermines national security:

MORDOVINA: The aims of the organization contradict the basics of public morality and the policy of the state in the area of family motherhood and childhood protection. The activities of the [Pride House] movement leads to propaganda of non-traditional sexual orientation which can undermine the security of the Russian society and the state, provoke social-religious hatred, which is the feature of the extremist character of the activity. Moreover it can undermine the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation due to the decrease of Russia’s population.

Such aims as creating an understanding of the necessity to fight against homophobia and the creation of positive attitudes towards LGBT sportsmen contradicts with the basics of public morality because they are directed towards the increase of the number of citizens of sexual minorities which breaches the understanding of good and evil, good and bad, vice and virtue.
