Author: , March 5th, 2013

Gay Caribbean CruisesJust got word about two new gay cruises planned for the Caribbean next year. The first one is by Atlantis, as reported on the Gay Travel Information blog:

March 15th-22nd 2014 – aboard the Celebrity Summit – Ports of call: San Juan-Puerto Rico, St, Barths, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados and back to San Juan.

Also from Gay Travel Information, there’s an RSVP cruise next February:

February 15th-22nd, on the MSC Divinia — Ports of call: Miami-Florida, Philipsburg-St. Maartan, San Juan-Puerto Rico, Great Stirrup Cay-Bahamas and back to Miami.

We took a Caribbean cruise with RSVP a few years ago and it was a lot of fun – great mix of guys. 🙂

Don’t Blame Atlantis and Celebrity Cruises for Dominican Fiasco

Author: , April 16th, 2012

Cruise ShipWhat happens when you bang some dude on the balcony of your Atlantis-sponsored cruise ship for an entire town in Dominica to see? You get locked the f*ck up, that’s what.

I’ve been following this gay scandal du jour since Queerty (you know, the open-minded and objective blog that’s “Free of an Agenda. Except that Gay One.”) since buried details about the encounter surfaced on the website the day it happened. Instead of conveying the facts as they were presented by what Queerty called the bigot-indulging Dominca News Online, the GayCities-owned Internet destination chose to spin the story to make it seem like it was (“gasp” – in Queerty’s flippant terms) everyone else’s problem except the two men who were arrested for bumping uglies on the boat.

Since then it seems that everybody has an opinion on the matter, especially those in our community who look for any opportunity to cry homophobia. There was even a boycott established against Atlantis Events and its head honcho Rich Campbell threatening to ruin the largest producer of gay and lesbian cruises and resort vacations if it doesn’t remove Dominca from its ports of call.

Why Did Gay Cruise Company Choose to Visit a Homophobic Country?

Author: , March 23rd, 2012

Gay Cruise, DominicaWednesday night, March 21, KCBS News, the local CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles, lead their news-heavy broadcast with the story out of West Hollywood about how two gay men had been arrested for “buggery” (sodomy) by Dominican police on their Celebrity Summit cruise ship docked off the small Caribean country.

Travel agent Jess Kalinowsky told KCBS Channel 2: “Number one, the travel agent should have told their clients about these destinations. And number two, Atlantis should have told the clients about the destinations. And number three, the clients should have kept their windows shut.”

The real question is: why would the WeHo-based Atlantis Events cruise to anywhere near Dominica, Jamaica, the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands where they know sodomy has long been illegal?

Fox News reported an interview with President Rich Campbell, who is aboard the cruise: “Many countries and municipalities that gay men visit and live in have antiquated laws on their books,” he said. “These statutes don’t pose a concern to us in planning a tourist visit.”

Atlantis Plans Gay Cruise to Mexico

Author: , March 4th, 2012

Atlantis Gay Cruise in MexicoAs many of you know, the October Atlantis Mexican cruise has become one of the big annual events on our local party calendar, with lots of San Diego boys saving up and eagerly planning for it every year. I promised in an earlier column that I’d let you all know as soon as the 2012 cruise went on sale to the public. And so … here it is!

As you can see, there are two ports of call this year, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, same as last year. Mazatlan was eliminated from the schedule due to safety concerns; again not a surprise, as this happened last year as well.

What is interesting is that we’ll be getting two days in Cabo, with the ship sailing out of port on the evening of Day 3, then cruising offshore in a circle somewhere, then steaming back into port the morning of Day 4.

Gay Cruise - Man OverboardIt seems that a passenger has fallen overboard from an Atlantis cruise off the coast of Mexico on Friday.

ABC7 photojournalist Sean Patrick Lewis aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas said passengers were awakened Friday morning by an emergency announcement, saying a man was believed to be overboard.

The ship’s captain confirmed the incident to passengers and said all rescue attempts were being made. An emergency assembly was called so passengers could be counted.

Author: , November 29th, 2011

Atlantis Gay CruiseAtlantis Events does things in a big way. It bills itself as the world’s largest travel company specializing in the gay market and for 20 years it has been organizing cruises, tours and gay weeks at resorts. Next year it is organizing what it says is the largest gay cruise in history.

The company has chartered Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, and it hopes to put 5,400 gays and lesbians on board for a week-long tour of the Caribbean.

The cruise leaves Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Jan. 29, and returns there on Feb. 5. There are only three ports of call: Labadee in northern Haiti, and Costa Maya and Cozumel, both in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Size Does Matter – Atlantis to Charter World’s Largest Cruise Ship Again

Author: , November 8th, 2011

Gay Cruising the Caribbean

Author: , March 13th, 2010

I’ve been on a dozen cruises, including six Atlantis sailings, two on RSVP, a pair with R Family, and a couple of straight voyages. I really enjoy Atlantis trips for a variety of reasons. I love the ships they charter, including the gorgeous Solstice, the vessel I’m now on and the Royal Caribbean ships, like the Freedom of the Seas with all their innovative features (ice skating, anyone?). I also enjoy the parties, events and other programming. Though also incredibly friendly with lots of great activities, RSVP cruises are usually a little smaller than Atlantis charters and there are fewer of them per year.

R Family, a tour and cruise company catering to gay families, is perhaps best known for its topnotch entertainment, luring Broadway belters through the owners’ many entertainment-industry connections. With children running around and the presence of doting grandparents, you may forget that those triplets over there have two dads. Still, beyond the shows and straight presence, the vibe, humor and atmosphere is unmistakably, unapologetically and proudly gay.

The second you step foot on a gay cruise you are on holiday, starting with a hug by one of the many attractive, engaging Atlantis team members at the ship’s gangway. Then, a glass of champagne and endless smiles and greetings from crew, Atlantis staff, and fellow passengers.

Atlantis to Give Away Three Staterooms on Gay Cruise

Author: , February 9th, 2010

Need a break from this unseasonably wet and bone-chilling San Diego weather? Want to trade these cold raindrops and windchill for the warmth of the sun, while you bask from the deck of a luxury liner? How about giving up another mundane week at the office for a trek through the Caribbean with 2,800 other gays and lesbians?

If you said “yes” to any of those questions, Atlantis Events has a contest that would allow you to do just that (as long as you are 21 or older). With the “Sail into the Sunshine Sweepstakes,” Atlantis Events will give away three oceanview staterooms. Enter by filling out an online form no later than Feb. 15.

“We’re giving a few lucky guests the chance to beat the winter blues and ‘Sail into the Sunshine’,” said Oscar Yuan, vice president of sales and marketing at Atlantis. “And there’s no better way to do that than to sail the Caribbean with 2,800 other gay and lesbian guests while being entertained by Atlantis’ best talent, world-famous DJs, and an endless schedule of activities – all compliments of Atlantis.”
