Gay Travel Marketing Comes to China

Chinese Gay Ad

A cheerful promotional cartoon from a major Chinese travel agency shows two women sharing one hotel bed and two men tucked into another. “Take your gay best friend to visit Hong Kong,” it proclaims, offering $80 off travel packages.

The promotion, showing this week on the Shanghai website of the travel agency Spring Tour, isn’t slick or high-profile. But it’s noteworthy because there are few portrayals of gays and lesbians in ads in China, though tolerance is increasing.

“There have been very few brands that have reached out in China, and the first that do are going to gain a lot of, not just kudos, but also loyalty from this community,” said Steven Paul Bielinski, who founded Shanghai LGBT Professionals to foster dialogue and cooperation with businesses on issues related to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. “And that’s going to translate to a lot of business for these brands.”

Philadelphia AdDid you know that only three US municipalities have targeted the LGBT community with destination ads?

Jaunted reports:

“Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay.” It’s a cute slogan, and believe it or not it comes from the tourism board of Philadelphia, PA. Well, this is actually only the third commercial by a US destination focused on the LGBT audience, and yet here we are in 2013.

Lets see some other cities step up to the gay travel market.

Gay Rights Groups to Orbitz: Drop Fox News Advertising

Author: , May 18th, 2011

Several prominent gay rights groups are urging travel site Orbitz to drop its advertising from Fox News because of the network’s antigay content.

Leaders from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Courage Campaign, and Equality Matters have all signed a letter to Orbitz CEO Barney Harford asking that his company stop advertising on Fox News.

The letter cites former Gov. Mike Huckabee hosting a show despite his statements in the past, comparing homosexuality with drug abuse, incest, pedophilia, and necrophilia. The letter also mentions host Bill O’Reilly warning about the dangers of allowing gay people to be near children, and others on the network “perpetuating the claim that repealing ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ would impact troop readiness and morale, despite multiple reports — including the Pentagon’s — to the contrary,” according to a statement released Monday.
