Queer Provincetown Paradise – Stuff.Co.NZ

Cape Cod is a tiny peninsula that stretches out, claw-like, from Massachusetts’ capital Boston. It’s about a three-hour drive, making it a popular summer escape for Bostonians and New Yorkers.

At the tip is the popular party town of Provincetown, the town that gave Anthony Bourdain his start in the kitchen as a dishwasher and a line cook. He referred to it as “paradise”, and once you’re there, you understand why. Long since known as a tolerant, free-spirited artist enclave, it’s also the hottest gay and lesbian destination in the north-east US.

You can still visit two places he name-checks in Parts Unknown’s Massachussetts episode. The first is the Lobster Pot, a two-storey whitewashed corner building on the beach with neon signage and splendid views. Bourdain missed its Portuguese kale soup, a local dish introduced by fishermen from the Azores, islands that lie between Provincetown and Portugal.

Out of Office Boys: Provincetown, Mass.

Author: , September 20th, 2017

When you travel, you know instantly if you want to go back. When my partner and I arrived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, we knew for sure we’d be back.

Provincetown is located at the end of Cape Cod in Mass.

More affectionately called P-town, the coastal city sits on the north end of Cape Cod and is easily accessed by what I hear is a beautiful drive through the Cape, by air, or as we did take the 90-minute ferry ride from Boston to P-Town. I can recommend the ferry option. It’s nice and relaxing, and adult beverages are available on board.

Since moving to Washington, D.C., I have always heard stories of P-town. Everyone talked highly of the fishermen’s village-turned-gay destination, but it’s hard to describe until you arrive.

When you set foot off the ferry, you know you are somewhere different. People are welcoming. The main street following the bay is busy. And you’ll even see people in their speedos and have to take a double take.

A few tips:

  • Bring shorts and flip-flops for summer. Outside of summer, review the forecast to plan out your fashion options.Check out the calendar of events and see what’s happening in town. Each weekend during the summer months has a theme. So dress and pack accordingly.
  • Go to Tea Dance at the Boatslip Beach Club. It’s where people congregate in the afternoons before heading to dinner or out for round two of libations.
  • Rent a bike and explore Cape Code National Sea Shore. It’s also the surest way to get to the beach. More on that coming!
  • Run in the morning along Commercial Street and enjoy the sites and sounds of P-town. Hit it early though. The streets get busy by 11 a.m.
  • Take an excursion. Kind of cloudy? Go whale watching!
  • Check out all of the wonderful LGBT accommodations recommended on Purple Roofs. We stayed at the Tucker Inn and loved it. The homemade breakfast pastries are a must.

A few things to avoid:

  • Do not come to P-town and be in a hurry. You are on vacation so get in the mood. In fact, stop by one of the many street side bars and drink your cosmo.
  • Do not just stay at the pool. Trek out to the Herring Cove Beach in the Cape Code National Seashore. Yes, it is a hike, a hike through the marshes on low tide and water in high tide but it will be worth it. Think of it as a gay pilgrimage. Bring your food and drinks with you because there is no cabana man here.
  • Do not miss all of the wonderful local shops and restaurant along Commercial Street. I like to leave a place thinking I helped stimulate the economy during my visit.

Whether you are looking for a laid-back beach vacation or one with some excitement, P-town has something for everyone. I am already planning an out of office return to P-town!

Christopher’s by the Bay – Provincetown Gay Bed and Breakfast

Christopher's by the Bay - Provincetown gay bed and breakfast

Periodically we’ll feature one of our properties here to let our readers know about some great gay friendly places to stay:

Perched at the northern edge of Cape Cod, between the sea and the sand of Provincetown’s Harbor, you’ll find a vibrant, gay friendly New England village called Provincetown. Our Provincetown gay bed and breakfast, Christopher’s by the Bay, is nestled in the heart of this historic Atlantic harbor town, on a quiet street in a beautiful mid-nineteenth century home.

We’re an easy walk from the east end art galleries, and just a short bicycle ride away from Herring Cove beach. Or maybe you’d rather stay put and relax in our quiet, beautiful garden. Provincetown is a unique and lovely place, from the warm sands of Race Point to the glimmering reflection of an autumn sunset over the bay.

Our home has a long and storied history – as a home to school teachers, artists, fishermen and sea captains. Many of Provincetown’s city records were destroyed in a fire in the 1920’s, so a lot of the history of the building has been lost. But more recent records show that it has been an inn since the 1970’s – originally called the Swanberry Inn, then Carpe Diem. The Inn has carried the current name, Christopher’s by the Bay, since 1999.

The namesake for the inn, Christopher Covelli, is an accomplished chef. He travels the world, teaching at a culinary school in Tuscany, practices his craft in Sarasota, Florida, and even competes in Iron Chef competitions.

Provincetown is the oldest ongoing art colony in the USA, and so we’ve named each of our guestrooms after one of the great artists: Michelangelo, Dali, O’Keefe, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, etc.

Your current hosts, Dave and Jim began visiting Provincetown on vacation a number of years ago, and loved the peace and tranquility in this little seaside village offers. After a number of visits, they decided to leave Washington DC in 2006 to fulfill their dream of owning a B&B.

Both Dave and Jim keep one foot in their former professional lives – Dave teaches Provincetown High School, and Jim continues to do leadership training and development for non-profits with Leadership Outfitters, Inc. But they also now enjoy baking, hosting guests and playing with the dogs on the beach each day in Provincetown!

Welcome to Provincetown and Christopher’s By The Bay it’s like nowhere else!
