Visiting Napa / Sonoma in the Off Season

Author: , February 9th, 2015

Wine GrapesMy favorite time of year to visit Napa and Sonoma are the months of January, February and March. It’s not uncommon to be the only one in the tasting room (hello, library and reserve pours!) or be invited to the cellar or winemaking facility to meet the winemaker. Why? Though the weather — between the 50s and 70s during the day, down to the 40s at night — is considered quite warm for much of the country, Bay Area residents consider it too chilly to visit tasting rooms. Within this window, the golden hue of mustard cover crops in the vineyards from late January through March, and greener grass in March as rainy season begins, makes for fantastically picturesque drives. And it’s all in all cheaper, too. Airfares are lower than in summer months — from JFK to SFO, the major airports serving Napa and Sonoma aside from Oakland, round-trip fares can run as low as $365 over a long weekend; from LAX, it’s just $44 round-trip.

The same goes for wine regions in other parts of the U.S. Out in the Finger Lakes or Long Island, for example, January and February especially offer some of the best hotel rates of the year — while lower flight demand always means cheaper airfare. It’s a no-brainer as far as we’re concerned, but here are a few extra tips for maximizing the experience:

1. Keep an eye out for seasonal hotel deals.

Like we said, during the winter months, you can score a steep discounts at hotels. Using Napa and Sonoma again as an example, the quaint English Tea Garden Inn in Cloverdale is offering 50 percent off the second night through March 30, with first night starting rates from $225. Similarly, Fern Grove Cottages in Guerneville gives you the third night free, with rates between $99 and $289, through February 28. At the luxe Harborfront Inn on Long Island’s North Fork, there are plenty of weekday rates starting from $209 and weekend rates for just $10 more in February — again roughly half of what you can expect to pay in summer.

Sonoma Valley: Going Gay Among the Vines

Author: , September 18th, 2014

Grapes, WineryIt’s harvest time among the vines of Sonoma County, just outside San Francisco. And ripening alongside the grapes is a new concept that embraces the LGBTI loves of fine living, travel and, to be honest, drinking – Out in the Vineyard.

Gary Saperstein and Mark Vogler are drawing tourists and locals out of gay mecca and over the Golden Gate Bridge to spend some time in the birthplace of the Californian wine industry.

It takes a while to clear the city’s sprawling suburbs but soon enough field after field of pristinely-kept vines line the road. They twinkle like diamonds and rubies, thanks to the tinselly ribbons tied to them to keep small birds off the grapes. But that’s not enough to scare flocks of turkey vultures who wheel around in a great blue sky, seeking out the small critters who are the vintners’ other enemy.

Sonoma Wine Country - Don and Ray

When we are traveling around the country we always try to take full advantage of everything and on our last trip to San Francisco we drove on up to the Sonoma wine country and took a “wine tour” with “Out in the Vineyard” which is a company that is owned by Gary Saperstein and Mark Vogler. They offer luxury travels and exclusive adventures for the LGBT community in regards to wine.

Iron Horse WineryOur day tour with them began at the Iron Horse Ranch and Vineyards. Our tour guide, David has been there a number of years and is extremely passionate about the making of wine. He gave us an excellent history lesson about grape growing, wines, bottles and even the corks.

In our travels from coast to coast, he was the most interesting and knowledgeable tour guide that we have ever encountered. Brent Burch, the Accounts Manager at the Winery was extremely helpful and professional as well. They are located in Sebastopol. Check them out at

La CremaOur next stop was La Crema Winery and we went first to their tasting room where we were hosted and entertained by two VERY passionate people, Brandii and April. They LOVE wine and being around people and they are truly remarkable and FUN !!!!! It is located in downtown Healdsburg at 235 Healdsburg Ave. You can check them out at:

After tasting several wines, we went a few doors down the street and had a fabulously delicious lunch at their restaurant, Partake by K J., which is Kendall-Jackson’s tasting lounge and restaurant. We indulged in their “Chef’s Tasting” which included food and different wine pairings.

PartakeAmong some of the exciting things we had were, Oysters, Estate Fava Beans and strawberries, a fine selection of cheeses, whole vine Tempura Maitake mushrooms, Smoked loin of lamb, heirloom beans, spring vegetables, beef and Pomegranate relish. All with wine pairings of course! Our server was exceptional and so professional ! They are located at 241 Healdsburg Avenue and you can check them out at

Mercury WineryOur next stop was in Geyserville visiting the Mercury Wine tasting room at 21015 Geyserville Avenue. You can visit them for a complimentary tasting of small-lot Pinot Noirs, Bordeaux-style blends and esoteric white varietals. The owner, Brad and his brother Grady are two great guys. They love what they are doing and have “the passion”. You can check them out at

If one were to try to take in the wineries at their own schedule it would be a nightmare. Gary and Mark do it the right way and take care of everything. Their itineraries are designed to provide intimate and exclusive wine country experiences and are strictly limited to small groups. They are offering a special South Africa Wine Safari in October which will be an intimate wine journey thru South Africa. If we were not going to be attending parties in the Hampton’s at that time, we know that we would want to go with them.

That trip is limited to only 12 guests, so book now ! Out In The Vineyard has lots of activities year round so be sure and check their website: to see their upcoming events. Thanks Gary and Mark for having such a great tour company ! We highly suggest that if anyone is going to the Wine Country north of San Francisco to be sure and take one of their tours.

We seldom get to use the word “passion” when it involves our travels but the people that we met in the wine country all have PASSION and that is a good thing! It is extremely enjoyable being around people with passion who are so enthusiastic about what they are doing.

When in that area, be SURE and stay at the Village Inn Guesthouse in Monte Rio. It is THE best. Owner Mark and his staff also have “the passion” and that is why guests keep returning year after year after year. Their website is:

Always remember to have fun when traveling, meet new people and talk to everyone!

Manhattan Bar SingaporeSINGAPORE: The Fabulous Manhattan Bar in Singapore
by Carlos Melia
Following my posts on Singapore and my favorites from my recent trip there, here I present the recently inaugurated Manhattan Bar at the Regent Hotel Singapore. Manhattan is a grand hotel bar inspired by the 19th century’s Golden Age of cocktails and fine drinking. Delivering on its name with a glamorous yet modern space reminiscent of old New York, craft bartending meets artisanal spirits to pay homage to classic and forgotten cocktails that leap from the pages of history. Savor classic and forgotten cocktails crafted from the world’s first in-hotel rickhouse and a remarkable collection of house-made ingredients.

Singapore Gardens by the Bay - Super treesSINGAPORE: Gardens by the Bay
by Carlos Melia
Gardens by the Bay, has to be one of my favorite attractions in Singapore. Last time I visited this city, it was still under construction, and I was only able to get a panoramic glimpse from the Singapore Flier and the KU DE TA, but this time I made sure to come and visit. The first feeling it came through me was, being inside of a space ship, a Noah’s Arc. The Gardens captures the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live and work – making Singapore a leading global city of the 21st century. The park consists on there areas, the Outdoor Gardens including the Supertree Groove, Flower Dome and my favorite the Cloud Forest. Located just behind the Marina Bay Sands complex. It is like experiencing the way we will live in the future, under perfect controlled conditions, sustainability and perpetual Spring. Access to all attractions, for foreigners, 28 Singapore Dollars.

Visiting Northern California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys

Author: , May 1st, 2013

Sonoma VineyardWine lovers have surely heard of the Napa Valley, one of the pre-eminent wine regions in the US. Jimmy Im takes you there for Passport Magazine:

Napa Valley receives millions of visitors a year, and over 20% of them identify as business travelers. While peak season occurs in the summer and fall months, winter and spring sees an average high of 62 degrees and, according to locals, is a favorable time to visit as there are less crowds, more personal attention at vineyards, and lower room rates. Despite all the hedonistic temptations of Michelin-star chefs, indulgent spas, well-appointed accommodations, and one-of-a-kind vineyards, business can be conducted in Napa, thanks to a number of impressive meeting facilities. While gay tourism grows every year in steady numbers, the LGBT community has been visible for decades.

Napa’s a great place to spend a romantic weekend – stay at a local B&B and drive around to some of the best wineries in the country, or head next door for the Gay Wine Weekend in Sonoma in June. Gay Travel Information reports:

Out in The Vineyard is proud to announce GAY WINE WEEKEND 2013 in California Wine Country -Featuring TWILIGHT T Dance, a weekend of wine & celebration, benefiting Face to Face, Sonoma County AIDS Network. Three full days of LGBT events in Northern California’s magnificent Sonoma Valley -home to some of the world’s most prestigious wines and wineries. Celebrate with world class wine and culinary delights, music and dancing in a private estate vineyard, VIP receptions, wine tasting excursions, champagne brunch and wine auction in one of the most famous luxury wine destinations in the world.
