Travel BudgetTRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: What Some Guests Say About B&B’s
by Don & Ray
Our last travel column dealt with some of the complaints that owners of Bed and Breakfasts had with a very small percentage of the guests staying with them. They all said that 95% of their guests were very wonderful people who they would love to have them stay with them again. It is just the 5% that are the problem. We have stayed at over 65 Bed and Breakfasts from coast to coast and we often ask other guests what they like and or dislike about the Bed and Breakfast. 95% of the time the guests give glowing reviews of their stay at the Inn. The most often things that we hear are how friendly and nice the owners are. The personality of the owners after all is one of the most important things that a Bed and Breakfast is known for. Of course the Inn has to be very clean, great breakfast, lovely location and a very nice ambiance. A few years ago it seems as though almost all Inns were filled with antiques however in today’s world, they are decorated in all types of decor and themes. We have stayed in Inns with western decor, leather decor, retro and Art Deco decor as well as rustic and chrome and mirrors.

Le 404 Restaurant - Paris - Carlos MeliaFRANCE: Paris’ Le 404 Restaurant
by Carlos Melia
One of my favorite activities when I travel, is to discover new restaurants, regardless the destination and type of cuisine. During my last trip to Paris, invited by La Compagnie Boutique Airline, I spent four days trying all new options I have never tried before. Some where over the top like L’Oiseau Blanc at the new Peninsula Hotel Paris, and some where very casual but yet AMAZING. Le 404 Restaurant, located in the neighborhood of Le Marais, was without a doubt one of them. Le 404 offers a great selection of dishes and delights from Morocco, in a very intimate atmosphere.

Piazza Popolo, Rome - Dolly GoolsbyITALY: Wonderful Days in Rome
by Dolly Goolsby
Rome certainly has taken hold of me. This is a beautiful city, and huge. I think what has impressed me the most on this visit is how large, magnificent and really, really old the structures, the streets, the city walls are. Of course, I KNEW that, but to FEEL it is very different. I have been to Rome several times in the past years. The first time I came here, I found the city to be so overwhelming…..scooters and cars zooming past relics of the old Roman Empire, as if these were everyday things….the first time I wrote about Rome, back in 1996 or 1997, I described the city as ” Los Angeles with ruins.”

Vatican - Dolly GoollsbyITALY: The Churches of Rome
by Dolly Goolsby
What a day we had! It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and we wanted to start our Sunday in the right way, so we went to Mass at a church just 2 blocks away from our apartment. We made it in time for the 9:30 Mass. This church is called Sant’Andrea della Fratte. We chose it because it was the closest one, but OMG! What a magnificent church. Mass was held in a chapel near the front of the church, but we could see that the church was huge. We were in just a small little area. After the Mass was over, we wandered through the rest of the church. To my amazement, there were two Bernini sculptures near the main altar. Bernini is my most favorite sculpture of all the Italian sculptors. Of course, his works are in many churches in Italy, but this was such a surprise. Bernini had a way of making the marble seem to be alive. Up close, these angels were so lifelike.

Italy MapITALY: From Rome to the Ligurian Sea Coast
by Dolly Goolsby
Wow! Time flies when you are having fun! I realize it has been several days since I wrote a post for this blog. Sorry, as I do want you sharing these experiences with me. However, we had sporadic Internet access, and we were busy, visiting with our good friends, Massimo and Magda Carli, in Viareggio. Susan and I spent our last day in Rome, walking and walking some more. We managed to visit a few more churches, but the weather was very humid, so we were exhausted by the time we got back to our apartment Wednesday night. Susan had looked up, on the Internet, how many churches there are in Rome. Within the city itself are over 900 churches! We decided we could never possibly see them all! We did find one, right near Piazza Venezia, that looked interesting, so we went in.

Dolly in the Cinque TerreITALY: The Day of 900 Stairs
by Dolly Goolsby
As you know, our first day on the Cinque Terre (yesterday) was not so fun. We had rain, off and on, all day. The trails were closed. We had enough good weather to allow us to explore both the old and the new towns of Monterosso. Then the rain came back, so we had to settle in our rooms, read, catch up on emails, and of course, study more Italian. Today, however, the sun came out, and we were ready to explore. Unfortunately for me, I had told Susan that, although I have been to the Cinque Terre many times, done some of the hikes at different times, I had never been up to the village of Corniglia. If you look at a map of the Cinque Terre, you will see that the southern most villages, Riomaggiore then Manarolo, are the least strenuous villages to visit.

UruguayURUGUAY: Fray Bentos Summer Vacations on the Banks of the Rio Uruguay
by Roy Heale
This small, sleepy town is one of Uruguay’s lesser known vacation spots. From green parks, dramatic cliffs along the river, historic architecture to splendid beaches, there exists a wide variety of outdoor activities for summer fun in and around Fray Bentos, Uruguay. Recognised for “the romance of the sun, the cliffs and the river”, the town was conceived as a river port that still preserves its natural features with waters deep enough to allow large ocean going ships. This pleasant Uruguayan city is connected with the resort town of Gualeguaychu in Argentina through the Libertador General San Martín international bridge. Here the climate is temperate and humid, ranging between 17° and 20° C in the summertime and dropping considerably during the winter.

Celebrating winter in style and pride with the locals of Reykjavik and LGBT travellers from around the world is what Rainbow Reykjavik Winter Pride festival is all about. Going on its third year  January 30th – February 2nd 2014 Rainbow Reykjavik is such a success that guests who joined in for the first year are coming back for the third time. But what is so special about Iceland and Reykjavik? And Iceland in winter – “that must be cold?” is commonly asked question. We wouldn’t lie to you, it gets cold but not so cold that a stylish warm winter coat and a hipster cap can save you from – so get your gear on to experience all the great things the festival has to offer.

winter pride, rainbow reykjavik, iceland, gay iceland, pink iceland, gay travel, lesbian, glbt

Rainbow Reykjavik starts with a soak in the dreamy Blue Lagoon where you’ll get to know fellow guests of Rainbow Reykjavik, after the refreshing time in the lagoon dinner will be served at a restaurant over looking the Blue Lagoon. On the drive back to Reykjavik your gay guide will tell you about the days to come and once in Reykjavik we’ll throw a welcome party at the Slippbar – very trendy hotel bar of Icelandair Marina hotel.

The second day will be all about Reykjavik and Divas! Start the day with a Pink City Tour ending in a penis museum visit (no you’re eyes aren’t lying, you just read that) followed by lunch where a Glíma show will keep you entertained. What is Glíma you ask – it’s Icelandic wrestling – see picture below:

Glima, wrestling, icelandic, iceland, pink iceland, rainbow reykjavik, gay travel, lesbian travel, winter pride, lgbt

After a free afternoon in Reykjavik guests gather again for a night to remember – Dinner & Divas show specially created for the Winter Pride festival as some of the best diva voices in Iceland will entertain guests over dinner, afterwards – a Northern Lights Hunt! We will all cross our fingers for some bright lights dancing in the sky. After some light hunting we’ll head to Reykjavik’s only queer bar Kiki for some drinks and dancing.

winter pride, gay pride, rainbow reykjavik, pink iceland, lesbian travel

Hope everybody didn’t stay up too late because the Saturday of Rainbow Reykjavik is a long and exciting day as we venture out into nature to explore the famous Golden Circle with geothermal areas, wonderful waterfall Gullfoss and the historic Thingvellir national park with all its natural wonders, the site where the tectonic plates are pulling apart! Lunch will be served at Efstidalur farm and it wouldn’t be a day complete without another geothermal dip, this time in Laugarvatn Fontana Spa.

Pall Oskar, gay travel, iceland, lesbian travel, lgbt, lesbian,

Get ready for the Queerest club night in Iceland as you are about to take part in a Pink Iceland PINK PARTY – this time with Iceland’s brighest shining pop star Páll Óskar as dj and performer of the night and the theme is Masquerade!

Pride Vermont 2013

Author: , September 8th, 2013

Pride Vermont LogoJust when you thought it was safe to put your pride flags away, Vermont has different plans for you. While the Pride Festivities of New York, Boston and other Northeast cities are a distant memory, every September, Burlington holds it’s annual Pride Parade, celebrating the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

Pride Vermont 2013 will take place Sunday, September 15th from 12:30 pm – 5 pm. It begins with the Parade, which starts at the south end of Church Street and ends in Battery Park overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains.

The Parade may finish in Battery Park, but that’s where the next festivities begin. The Vermont Pride Festival, best described as one big party, embraces the whole LGBT community (including our beloved allies). True to its Vermont heritage, expect to see people of all ages and backgrounds, from drag queens to the curious. The Festival runs from 1pm – 5pm and includes musical performances, booths featuring local LGBT organizations and other vendors, a children’s activity tent, and of course a beer tent.

A first for Pride Vermont this year is “OUT on Church Street.” On Friday, September 13th, from 6pm – midnight purchase a Street medallion, sold at participating businesses or through Pride Vermont. With the medallion (which costs $10 and benefits PRIDE Vermont), get 10% off at participating restaurants, shops, and stores, including Macy’s.

If you’re a foodie and looking to get your fill of local Vermont favorites, you’re in luck. Running concurrently with Vermont Pride in Battery Park is Northern Decadence Food & Travel Expo brought to you by the Vermont Gay Tourism Association. Northern Decadence features a wide array of events, including a tent filled with Vermont-based food vendors, cooking demos, and beer and wine tastings. There will be a Silent Auction with offerings such as ski passes, retail gift certificates and stays at Vermont Inns. Northern Decadence is $5 to enter (free for children) and runs from noon – 5pm.

For a full list of events for the week leading up to Pride and the weekend itself, visit Pride Vermont.

See you there!
