Gay Providence – Instinct Magazine

Gay Providence

Maybe I’m a bit biased, because I went to college there, Providence is quite the fun city if you allow it to be. Located in the smallest state of Rhode Island, Providence is proof that size really doesn’t matter when it comes to having fun and enjoying yourself. It’s a great gay alternative for people living in Boston and New York City, for it only takes about 3 hours from NYC and just one from Bean Town to get to, experience some fabulous gay nightlife along with some great shopping, eating, and so much more.

Let’s start with the nightlife. Because downtown Providence is such a college town, it not only has a younger quality and feel to it, but the city also balances itself out with some sophisticated clubs and bars where any crowd can truly fit in.

There are so many bars in Providence that it’s hard to choose just one to enjoy for its own merits.  If dancing the night away is your thing, then Mirabar, Alley Cat, and EGO Providenceare three fantastic choices that play some amazing music throughout the night with super hot go-go boys who are there for the delicious eye candy and whatnot.  For my fellow bear aficionados, you can’t go wrong with a classic like The Eagle.  And for those who enjoy a lovely cocktail bar after work, then The Stable will work for you (rated #1 in Providence for gay bars).

Gay Medellin, Colombia – Nomadic Boys

Gay Medellin

Medellin used to be considered the crime capital of Colombia. However, over the past 10 years it has undergone a huge transition to become one of the safest and most advanced places in the entire country.

Medellin is also a very gay friendly city. The paisas (people of Medellin) are very welcoming and there’s also a large gay scene here. What impressed us the most was a public sign we spotted, which sets out the various police fines you can get: one of them was for homophobic abuse, which carries a fine of 657,000 Colombian pesos ($224). Whether this is actually enforced is another matter entirely, but the very fact that this is even in place speaks volumes!

We spent 4 months in Medellin, using it as a home base during our big trip in Latin America and loved it. This is our gay guide to Medellin featuring our favourite gay bars, clubs, gay friendly hotels to stay things to do.

Gay Bars in Medellin

Poblado is the main touristy heart of the city, with all the best restaurants, bars and hotels. In the evening, around Parque Lleras, it’s an extremely fun place to be, full of life, atmosphere and a few gay bars.

Bar Chiquito: this was our favourite gay bar in Medellin. It has yellow twin flamingo statues outside to welcome you. The staff are gorgeous and extremely friendly here. They also make delicious cocktails and have a large outdoor terrace. We loved coming here for evening cocktails before heading to one of the gay clubs in Medellin. Bar Chiquita is open on Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm till 2am and is located at Carrera 37 # 10-37 Local 205.

Gay Charleston, South Carolina – Instinct

Gay Charleston - pixabay

When it comes to southern comfort, culture, history, and hospitality, we did not need to look any further than Charleston, South Carolina. There were already many arrows, reviews, and people directing us to visit and enjoy Chucktown.

Charleston has been given the nod by readers of many travel magazines as their favorite domestic travel destination. With honors such as being named the No. 1 City in the World and the No. 1 City in the U.S. and Canada (for 5 years straight, 2013 to 2017) by the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards and the No. 1 U.S. City by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards (for 6 years straight, 2013 to 2016).

In the heart of the city, one will find Belmond Charleston Place, which we were excited to call home for the next three nights. Ranked as one of the World Best Hotels by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine consecutively for the last 10 years, Belmond Charleston Place had a reputation to uphold and it did with flying colors.

We opted for the Club Level experience at Belmond. Available by private access only, the Club Level occupies the top two floors of the hotel where we thoroughly enjoyed the two-story Club Lounge. With all-day complimentary food and beverage service, including continental breakfast, afternoon tea, evening hors d’oeuvres and desserts, it would have been a pleasure to spend the whole vacation on those two floors. The staff knew our names from the first hello and were there until we sadly dragged our bags away to check out.

Apanemo Hotel – Santorini Gay Friendly Hotel

Apanemo Hotel - Santorini Gay Friendly Hotel

If you ever imagined yourself basking inside an infinity pool under the Mediterranean sun, with a glass of wine in your hand from the vineyards of Greece and the view of a volcanic island stretching into the endless blue of the sea… we can tell you the name of the place: welcome to the Apanemo hotel in the island of Santorini.

The Apanemo hotel is located atop a hill in the area of Akrotiri -an ancient settlement of the Minoan Age that was overflowed by lava when the volcano of Thera erupted in 1627 BC. The mystery surrounding the catastrophe is believed to have inspired Plato in his conception of Atlantis -the utopian and forever-lost mystical island of the Mediterranean.

It was millenia after the dust had settled when the Apanemo hotel sprung into view with its elegant venetian architecture, crisp-white walls and pools of vibrant, blue waters. There, the modern came in touch with the timeless, channeling a sense of awe every time the amber colours of the sunset fall over the caldera.

Today, the Apanemo is abundant in what it has to offer. You could wake up in one of the 25 bright and spacious guest-rooms which are fully equipped with air-conditioning, refrigerator, safe, TV and wireless Internet access. Ready to leave the coziness of the bed? How about breakfast? The buffet is rich with traditional Greek delicacies which you can enjoy on your private balcony with the panorama of the Aegean reaching the horizon. A messy room need not bother you since cleaning services are available daily. Now, why not take a stroll in the garden or the sun terrace? Perhaps you could spend an hour or two in the hotel’s spa tub or lounge in the common area for a cup of tea.

If you’re planning an adventurous day you’ll find the surrounding area a real thrill! The path leading to the ancient city of Akrotiri, which was unearthed from the volcanic ashes in the ’70s, is optimal for hiking, trail-running and mountain-biking. For the fans of water-sports scuba-diving services are offered nearby while the magnificent Red Beach is within walking distance. Other sites worth visiting include the infamous volcano whose crater is easily reachable, Oia, a nearby village where the extraordinary sunset is admired by dozens of people daily, as well as Pyrgos with its majestic castle dating back to the Dark Ages.

After nightfall you could return to the hotel and enjoy a bath with Apanemo’s complimentary toiletries, grab a bite at the hotel’s restaurant, or have a drink at the lounge bar. Alternatively, you could visit Fira, the island’s capital where the night-life is alive and vibrant with the colours of the rainbow! Worried about getting around? The Apanemo hotel offers shuttle services and the staff is always available for anything else you might need!

TRAVELING IN OUR FABULOUS GAY WORLD: Signs of the Times

Since 99% of the time we always drive coast to coast, besides being able to visit a lot of very interesting sights we also get to see a lot of very interesting signs along the highways and as we drive into a town. Smaller towns seems to have the best interesting signs.

We don’t know if they are really trying to attract more people or that they are really just ignorant as to their signage.

Either way, we are showing some of the signs that we have seen in our travels around the country and some are so unbelievable that we had to stop and take photos.

We are not going to tell what towns or cities that these are in but of course most are in the “Deep South”. Most all of these are in small towns but we do fine some very interesting ones on the Interstates as well.

We get a lot of emails from readers asking where our next trip is.

We leave the end of November on a driving trip to Denver and across Utah to Las Vegas and then to West Hollywood for a few days and then on to Palm Springs and then the drive back to Kansas City.

In Winslow, Arizona we will be staying at the Wigwam Motel and each unit is in the shape of a Teepee. Should be very interesting. Meanwhile enjoy some of the photos here that we have found in our travels.

Rome Skyline From the Vatican – Keep Calm and Wander

Rome Skyline - Keep Calm and Wander

If you’re like me who like to see city skylines, then we could travel together. The view of the Vatican from the top of St Peter Basilica is surreal. You won’t just be able to see the city-state itself but it goes farther beyond Rome. You won’t be able to see skyscrapers like the ones in Dubai, Chicago or New York. But you’ll see a city that’s a work of many great artists who combined their creative forces to build a beautiful place that’s classic and timeless.

From the Top. You’ll be able to see the building where the Pope lives. The gardens of the Vatican, the building where the Sistine Chapel is, bridges and other magnificent architectural work. You’ll also be in close encounter with the Michelangelo’s Dome that towers all over Rome. The statues of Christ and his disciples on the facade roof are within your reach, too. And oh, I’ve never seen a city with so many domes but Rome.

Florence Skyline from Torre de Arnolfo – Keep Calm and Wander

Florence Skyline from Torre de Arnolfo - Alain

Florence is the cradle of the Renaissance. The city, wherever you go, is full of incredible art from the middle ages. You’ll find works of Dante, Michelangelo, Giotto, Boticelli and other Italian masters in one city. Stunning frescoes? Check. Incredible sculptures? Check. Amazing architecture? Check. Great literature? Check. My dilemma was: Where do I start?

The narrow, cobblestone streets had me feeling that I was truly in ancient Italy. The city was once tagged as the “Athens of the Middle Ages.” Much of the things to do and see here are concentrated in the Historical Centre, a UNESCO-World Heritage Site. In the middle of it, you’ll find the stunning Florence Cathedral which the locals refer to as “Duomo.” From here, it’s an easy walk to the Academia where you’ll find Michelangelo’s original statue of “David.” You can also walk to Uffizi Gallery and marvel at its colossal statues outside the building. Nearby, Ponte Vecchio has been there for centuries and you might find something to splurge your money on.

Where to see the spectacular view of Florence skyline. The best view of Florence would be on the top of Torre de Arnolfo. It’s got the best view of the city’s skyline. Most of the postcards you see and buy were taken from here.

A Day in Florence. Yes, it is possible if your purpose is just to see the usual tourist attractions in the Historical Center. You can do these sights: Academia, Duomo and Baptistry, Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio. I have to warn you though that the queue at the Academia is brutal. So you better start there. Be the first in the queue in the morning. And oh, I find the gelato here in Florence better than the gelatos in any city I’ve been in Italy. Don’t be shy to get a large scoop!
