Buenos Aires – LGBTIQA Capital

Buenos Aires Next to a photography exhibition of transsexuals, Ruben Forace touches up his black eyeliner with one hand as he holds a balloon with the rainbow flag in the other. “My identity is ambiguous. I’m not trans because I didn’t get a gender-reassignment surgery and I don’t consider myself as a normal gay guy. My partners are heterosexuals and I don’t like going out with gay men,” he says. Forace, who works as a tourist guide and has identified as a female cross-dresser for the past 10 years, says his identity is fluid. “During the day, I’m a man and I wear clothes for men. At night, when I go out dancing, I am a girl.” Forace goes by Tati at night. Forace is one of hundreds of people participating in Buenos Aires’ LGBTIQ festival, a week-long series of events to celebrate sexual diversity. Organized by Argentina’s Tourism Ministry, the festival features drag queens shows, queer tango classes, sports activities, photography exhibitions, and business networking opportunities. For a week, the city’s pedestrian road signs changed to two men and two women.

Tripping through Tbilisi

Tbilisi If I had a coin for every time I explained I was traveling to Georgia The Republic of, not the US state I’d be a wealthy man. Admittedly, to many Westerners it’s not high on the bucket list, overshadowed by higher-profile neighbours Turkey and Russia. But following a invitation from a friend to visit him in his newly-rented apartment in Tbilisi, I felt instantly curious and torn. It’s legal to be gay in Georgia, but the country is so entrenched in Orthodox Christianity that LGBTI people are often victims of abuse and violence. When it comes to where queer travelers in the West choose to vacation, many of us vote with our wallets, supporting the economies of well-catalogued gay-friendly destinations, such as Sitges or Mykonos. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Mostly Sunny Hawaii – Dolly Travels

Dolly in Kona Aloha. I am getting lazier by the day. Kat and Darrell are both busy all day long, and I either swim, read, take a walk or a nap. The lanai keeps beckoning me. Sunday was a day when neither of them worked. We went to brunch in town at the Daylight Coffee Company, where we had some very good food, and just enjoyed the ambience of the sea nearby, the breezes and a little cooler weather. The surf was fairly quiet at first, but the clouds coming off the mountain were pretty dark. Later, the surf did pick up. The waves, while not enormous, were foamy white and the sea became a grayish-blue. There was a local man, fishing right below the deck of the restaurant. His catch was interesting. Dolly - Kona His catch: there is are 2 parrot fish, an octopus, several others of which I dont know the names, but they all looked, to me, like they belonged in an aquarium, not a skillet or barbecue. ( I think the striped fish are convict tangs, according to this fish book Darrell loaned me.) Later, back at the house, as we relaxed on the lanai, it started to rain. I loved that! Sitting on a couch, nice and dry, watching the rain on the pool and coming down the chain rain gutters. It was not cold at all; the air temperature did cool down for a short time, and felt very pleasant. Today I got a lesson in coffee bean sorting. Darrell and his worker, Francisco, had picked a small batch of beans yesterday. After the beans had soaked overnight, the hulls separated from the beans. Fransisco very patiently explained the process to me as he sorted. Of course, I had to get my hands in there. Francisco, from Honduras, is an expert on coffee beans. He told me that when he lived there, he picked 400 to 500 pounds of coffee a day for plantation owners. He also explained that the coffee sorter we were using here was very small, but workable for small batches of beans. I am certainly glad I dont have to do that every day, but it was fun for an hour. Francisco also builds rock walls, digs trenches for electrical cables, or does landscaping; he seems to be a jack of many trades and is a personable, gentle, good person. Now it is gorgeous outside. The pool is calling. I shall say Aloha and I will return on another day. Dolly

Cycling Catalonia

Cycling Catalonia We all know that Ibiza, Gran Canaria and Sitges are the holy trinity of Spain’s LGBTI holiday destinations. Look at what most gay tour operators offer and you’d be forgiven for thinking this was all Spain consisted of. Bustling beaches, a club on every corner and mornings spent nursing a hangover. And then there’s Barcelona. We’ve all been there and loved every minute. But what if you want a break from the bars a real getaway? Is there an alternative? We packed our bags and cycled across Spain to find out.

Cycling Catalonia

Putting Barcelona, the regional capital, firmly to one side, we opted for the Undiscovered Southern Catalonia (or Catalunya) package and began our eight-day route in the seaside town of LAmpolla [above], near Spains famous Ebro Delta. The Delta is hugely important to Spain. Not only is it the country’s second biggest rice provider but it also hosts over half of Europe’s bird species throughout the year from sparrows to flamingos.

Gay Gran Canaria – The Nomadic Boys

Gay Gran Canaria Gran Canaria is a notorious gay destination in Europe, specifically in Playa del Ingles in the South. The island has always been a beacon of tolerance whilst in the olden days, mainland Spain used to have an extremely hostile conservative attitude led by the Catholic Church. The Canary Islands were a popular place to exile people who broke social rules and thought differently. During the harsh, repressive Franco years, Gran Canaria was too far away from the mainland to bother with, so they turned a blind eye to homosexuality there. From the 1960s, tourism really started to take off, attracting more and more foreigners and therefore even more tolerant attitudes. Today, the island is a playground for the gay boys, particularly in the famous Yumbo Centre a shopping mall in Playa del Ingles full of mainly gay bars, clubs and boutique Clone Zone type shops. Theres so many gay hangouts in Yumbo Centre to choose from, we’ve sifted through some of our favourites in our gay guide to the best gay bars, clubs and events in Gran Canaria.

Full Moon Party in Thailand – The Scruffy Italian Traveler

Full Moon Party - Scruffy Italian Traveler I couldnt sleep a few nights ago Do you know why? It was Full Moon Night! So I was over thinking and I recalled the great time I had in Ko Pha Ngan Have you ever been to its infamouse Full Moon Party? I promise it is a lot of fun What is exactly a Full Moon Party? It is a Beach Party to celebrate the Full Moon! The most famous Full Moon party in the world started and still takes place every month in Thailand, on one of the islands of the Samui archipelago, in the Gulf Coast, Ko Pha Ngan. It is held every month for more than 30 years now, on the Full Moon night. The Gulf coast of Thailand is worldwide well known for the three tiny, fine islands of the beautiful Samui archipelago: Ko Samui, Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan. The best known, and very popular with tourists and backpackers from all over the world, is Ko Samui. If you know me by now at least a bit, you might have guessed I decided to stay away from Ko Samui: although a beach heaven, and a bigger island with plenty of choices for any taste apparently, the place has recently become too crowded. Its resorts and beach bars are attracting far too many tourists, rivaling Phuket.

By Sergio Scardia – Full Story at The Scruffy Italian Traveler

Note from a reader: The author should have noted that the full moon revelers have so trashed, misused and desecrated Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao that the government has made them off limits and will arrest anyone who sets foot on any of the islands.

Gayfield Square Apartment – Gay B&B in Edinburgh, Scotland

Gayfield Square Apartment Periodically we’ll feature one of our properties here to let our readers know about some great gay friendly places to stay: The beautiful old Merchant’s House apartment is situated in a wonderful Georgian building overlooking Edinburgh’s historic Gayfield Square. The apartment is in fact the whole ground floor of an original house dating back to around 1800, with private front and back garden. It feels like being in a country house as the square is so quiet yet you’re right in the middle of the city- only a 7 minute walk to Princes Street and the main train station (from there an easy walk to the castle and old town). It comprises 2 double bedrooms/2 bathrooms to sleep up to 4 people very comfortably. It’s also a stone’s throw from the fashionable Broughton Street with its great cafe culture and bistros, as well as being close to the Playhouse Theatre and the main downtown shopping area. The apartment benefits from free wifi internet access and is non- smoking throughout, although there’s ample outdoor space for those in need! The Drawingroom is a spacious and grand room with double Georgian windows overlooking the private landscaped front garden out to the leafy square beyond. There’s a living flame gas fire and flatscreen TV with digital channels and DVD player. There are two cosy bedrooms both with Eurpoean king sized bed, firm but soft mattresses and fresh white linen supplied. We also supply towels and welcome toiletries. The main hall leads to a large bathroom with corner bath and shower and the rear bedroom has its own en suite shower room also. We supply radio alarm clocks and hairdryer. The kitchen is a dream for any budding chef with large central granite island and dining table making it a very sociable place to relax and chat whilst cooking and eating. It’s fully equipped with a five burner range cooker/oven, microwave oven, fridge/freezer, coffee maker, washing machine and tumble dryer. French windows from the kitchen lead to back a private garden/patio area with al fresco dining area and seating. We can also organise a welcome food hamper on request – no need to run to the corner shop for a pint of milk when you arrive! (Please just ask for a quote depending on size and your preferences) There’s on street parking just outside the apartment (max 4 hours parking with ticket: Monday- Friday, weekends free) or a short walk from the edge of the parking zone (24 hours free parking- about a 10 minute walk or less), but our best advice is that unless you are doing out of town day trips, DON’T rent a car whilst here- you won’t need it since everything is easily walkable (there are also good car rental options close by for when you are departing the city- just ask!).
