Sonoma Like a Local

SonomaI’ve lived here since… The year 2000, when a tech job brought me back home to wine country. Sonoma Valley was the mid-point between my boyfriends’s work and mine. I never would have imagined being in rural America again, after having grown up here, but it’s been an incredible place to enjoy a luxury lifestyle with great friends, incredible cuisine and of course, luscious wine.

I’ve stayed because… I love the Sonoma lifestyle! There is nowhere on earth like it. It’s a small town that welcomes everyone – just check out my blog post, ‘Sonoma: A Mayberry for Everyone’. The valley is blanketed with grape vines and the wine country lifestyle is all about sharing great wine and gourmet cuisine with friends. We have incredible weather, weekend wine tasting year round, pool parties all summer long, and warm Indian summers into November.

My favorite queer bar has to be… With a population of around 10,000, Sonoma doesn’t have an exclusively gay bar; however, it’s incredibly gay-friendly and gay couples have been flocking to this bucolic wine country town for years, buying second homes or moving here full-time. The most mixed, homogenized bar I’ve ever stumbled into (or out of) is located right here in Sonoma. Steiner’s Tavern, located on the west side of the historic Sonoma Plaza, where, on any given night you’ll find an incredible mix of thirsty bar patrons – locals, business professionals, bridesmaids, farm hands, gays and the occasional trans person. Thursday nights has become known as ‘Thirsgays’ – a great place to meet one of the local boys!
