Lesbians-only cemetery in BerlinIf lesbians can go through hell together, they should be allowed to share heaven, too.

If you haven’t already heard, Berlin–the city with a famously gay mayor–now boasts a lesbians-only cemetery. Spearheaded by the Sappho Women’s Living Foundation, the national lesbian club, and intended for the members of the SAFIA club for lesbians over age 48, the cemetery has a section for 40 lesbian-only graves among the sprawling, leafy green Lutheran Georgen Parochial cemetery. Sappho released a statement saying the cemetery is a “statement against the widespread invisibility of lesbians in society, politics, and the media.”

While many women reserved their plots when the cemetery launched back in April, the first funeral is slated for next Friday (for Hilde Heringer, a Sappho member who initiated the cemetery and recently passed away from breast cancer at age 66).
