Cancun Ranked Number One for Gay Travel in Mexico

Author: , June 29th, 2012

Findings from the largest ever LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) marketing study have shown Cancun to be far and away the most desirable destination in Mexico for gay travelers.

Twenty-three per cent of respondents in the LGBT 2020 study, which was conducted by consulting firm Out Now Global, said they wanted to visit Cancun in the next three years, making it nine per cent more popular than traditional rival Puerto Vallarta and seven per cent more sought after than Mexico City.

In addition to topping the list of desired Mexican locales, the resort town placed well internationally, ranking behind only Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo as the most appealing Latin American LGBT destination.

Hiking the Volcano

Author: , June 29th, 2012

Hiking the VolcanoJust a few weeks ago, big-mountain skier and mountaineer Chris Davenport skied 15 major volcanoes in 14 days. But while such a feat is reserved for the most elite of athletes, volcanoes are becoming (pardon the pun) a new hot thing to explore for more mainstream adventurers.

Whether it’s a technical ascent up Mt. Rainier (yep, the fifth-highest peak in the U.S. is also the country’s tallest volcano) or a casual stroll to the rim of the sulfur-smoky Volcan Poas in Costa Rica (that’s another of the country’s volcanoes, Arenal, at the left), exploring volcanoes offers some of the same challenges of hiking and mountain climbing, plus, depending on your location, the extra thrill factor of hot lava and steaming geysers.

Not surprisingly, more operators are adding volcano tours to their itineraries, but one that’s been doing it for years is REI Adventures, which offers trips for various skill levels to destinations including southern Italy, Yellowstone National Park, and Nicaragua. I spoke to REI adventure travel program manager Justin Wood for tips on safety, cool volcanic terms, and what it’s really like to walk around in an active volcano.

Thousands Come Out for Tel Aviv Gay Pride

Author: , June 29th, 2012

Tel Aviv Gay PrideGay Pride 2012 drew tens of thousands of people to the streets of Tel Aviv earlier this month to celebrate the city’s annual gay pride event.

The partygoers started their journey at a community park and walked through several main streets in the heart of the city before holding a large-scale beach party. The parade in Tel Aviv, known for its vibrant homosexual community, drew tourists from around the globe.

“What I find special about Tel Aviv is that it has a very vibrant gay community, but more than that, I find that the city itself and the people of Tel Aviv are very open-minded towards gay people,” said Neil Porter of Berlin. “Wherever we go, we can hold hands, we can kiss, and nobody ever bats an eyelid.”

Organisers said they would be “returning to the roots of the original Pride London rallies” after cars and floats were cancelled with just over a week to go until the event.
