Rome Day Two, Part Two: Trevi Fountain & The City of Water

Author: , May 30th, 2012

Trevi Fountain, Rome

Marco Fabry Trevi FountainAfter lunch, we walked over to the Trevi Fountain – the place was packed, as it probably always is, with tourists groups and individuals vying for the best shots of the fountain.

It’s a beautiful place from almost any angle – we took shots from up above, off to the side, and below looking up. I’m always thrilled at places like this to see such a great variety of people – of every race, nationality, and sexuality.

The fountain’s also a great place to cool off, but don’t put your feet in it – or in any of the other beautiful fountains you see – the price can be a hefty “multa” (ticket) for messing with one of Italy’s national monuments.

Legend says if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, you will come back to Rome again, so Marco and Fabry gave it a try.

David PantsWe headed off down another street leading away from the Trevi Fountain, and ran across a sign for “La Città dell’Acqua”, the city of water.

At the same intersection, BTWQ, we found some must-have pairs of shorts. 🙂  Wanna look like the statue of David?

The City of Water, RomeIntrigued by the sign, we followed it down a little “vicolo” (alley) to a cinema where, about ten years ago, they were digging to add another theater, and hit gold – several layers of ancient Rome beneath the ancient building.

City of Water Theater, RomeThey excavated it, and built the theater in a glassed room above it, and for 3 Euro (one more if you want an English or Italian audio tour) you can go downstairs and see the ruins. They’re fascinating, and include the remais of a roman home and an old water cistern. The water system, built 19 years before the birth of Christ, is still in use today for the Trevi Fountain.

There’s still running water down there, and the underground museum includes a number of statues, vases, coins, and other things unearthed at the site. It’s “vale la pena” – worth it for the price.

Davey Wavey Does the Bathhouse

Author: , May 29th, 2012

Davey Wavey at the BathhouseI’m always up for an adventure. And I rarely say no to an experience that will provide good material for my blog or YouTube channel. So when my friend Matt suggested that we “lose our bathhouse virginity” in New York City, I was sold.

Bathhouses, like libraries and newspapers, are a dying breed in this part of the world. The Internet is killing them. It’s not a quick and easy death; instead, it’s slow, painful and drawn out. Indeed, it’s much easier to browse profiles of eligible men from the comfort of your own home–or even on your iPhone or iPad. And so, as more and more gay men turn to the Internet for dating and fun, time is running out for the bathhouses.

When Matt and I arrived at the bathhouse, we were quite certain that the address must be wrong. From the outside, the building was unassuming. But that’s the whole point; discretion is key. A security officer guarded the front entrance and directed us to the elevator.

Ten Great Nude Beaches

Author: , May 29th, 2012

Nude BeachesThere are nude beaches in America? That’s a question I get asked all the time, and the answer I always reply with is: there’s more than you think actually. Sure they’re often hidden and hard to reach (thanks in part to the shame-based culture we live in), but the freedom to shimmy out of your Speedo on a hot summer day and splash around in the water au naturel makes the occasionally off-the-beaten-path trek well worth it. Thanks to the West Coast’s combination of endless, tucked-away shorelines and progressive politics, there’s an abundance of places to toss out your worries, workload, and swimsuit and indulge in endless summer. Just don’t forget the SPF50, the Pacific sun can spank your booty hard (trust me).

#10 Laguna Creek Beach, Santa Cruz, CA: When people fantasize about the Northern California coastline, it’s the scenery at Laguna Creek they’re picturing. The cliffs are jagged and expansive, the perfectly blue waters slam the shoreline resulting in a spectacular spray of ocean water, and you half expect a hawk to swoop down in front of you and pluck lunch straight out of the sea. Though there isn’t a ton of nudity. On my last visit (a balmy weekend no less), I spotted just one naked guy among maybe a dozen scattered sunbathers. Directions: Follow Hwy. 1 9.8 miles north of where it intersects with Hwy. 17. Park on the east side of the road and walk the trail on the west side of the highway until you hit the beach.

#9 San Gregorio State Beach, Half Moon Bay, CA: I walked and walked and walked almost all two miles of this extensive nude beach, enjoying tide pools, seashells, and an endless horizon along the way. There were maybe a dozen guys hanging out in the buff (and most were hidden by the large piles of driftwood they’d fashioned into makeshift forts), so this isn’t a social beach. If you’re looking to have a generous stretch of sand largely to yourself or take a naked stroll, you’ve found your nirvana. Directions: Drive north just past the intersection of Hwy. 1 and SR 84 (where you’ll likely see a bunch of cars) and turn left at the dirt road. Follow it past a pasture of grazing cows until you come to a makeshift parking lot. San Gregorio is privately owned, and a guy in a pickup will ask you for a couple bucks to use the beach. Follow the trail at the parking lot down to the beach.
