Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha, NebraskaWhen in the Midwest, there are actually quite a few good options on where to visit and Omaha, Nebraska ranks right up there. We have been going to Omaha for more than 30 years on business and pleasure and it really does just keep getting better and better.

The city has a very lively downtown, which sad to say, most cities do not have anymore. With a metro area of close to a million population there is so much to see and do in the city ranging from shopping, theatre, sports, museums and art galleries to fine dining and of course night life!

Joslyn Museum, Omaha, NebraskaOne of the finest museums in the Midwest, Joslyn Art Museum is a “must see” when you are in Omaha. It is a Smithsonian affiliate, offering an impressing range of artwork, including permanent exhibits from Monet, Pollock and Chihuly. (but then it seems like EVERY museum and art gallery in the country has at least one Chihuly).

The museums website is www.joslyn.org and is located jut a few blocks from downtown. Here is a listing of absolutely wonderful places to visit when in Omaha.

Omaha, NebraskaOmaha is an old meat packing town and has been around for a long time and it has some of the finest architecture in the Midwest. One could spend a couple of days enjoying all of the old buildings downtown and there are many interesting “period” residential houses in the city.

Omaha has a lot of different neighborhoods with diverse restaurants, cafes and shopping. Every once in a while when you are driving, you find yourself in a completely different setting. It is almost like a little Seattle in that way.

And, if Omaha is good enough for Warren Buffett who could live anywhere that he wanted to, to make Omaha his hometown and stay there for all these years, the city must have something good to offer!

Omaha Arch, Omaha, Nebraska

The Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha has been serving the community for over 30 years. their website is. www.mccomaha.org.

The gay nightlife in Omaha is always very busy. Most bars and nightclubs are open seven days a week. Among our favorites are DC’s Saloon, 610 South. 14th St, Connections at 1901 Leavenworth St.and primarily a lesbian bar, Flixx Video at 1019 South 10th St., Omaha Mining Company at 1715 Leavenworth St. and The Max at 1417 Jackson St (at 15th St.). The Max has been around forever and is very popular.

Also try Myth, 1105 Howard St. which is a nice, mixed martini bar and Broadway Joe’s on the Council Bluff, Iowa side at 3400 West Broadway which is a real nice neighborhood bar.

Joslyn Museum, Omaha, NebraskaJust across the state line and the Missouri river is Council Bluffs, Iowa. And of course we are extremely proud of the good people of Iowa for legalizing same-sex marriage.

60 miles to the west of Omaha is Lincoln which is the home of the University of Nebraska. It is also a very interesting city to visit and with the University located there, they have a vibrant gay community as well.

The Cornerstone Mansion Inn at 140 North 39th Street is the only accommodations listed on purpleroofs. Their website is www.cornerstonemansion.com

Several good websites to visit before traveling to Omaha would be:
www.visitomaha.org, www.lincoln.org and www.councilbluffsiowa.com and of course www.gaycities.com is always an ideal website to visit to get the latest on the bar scene.

Omaha is a very friendly city and restaurants, accommodations, bars and nightclubs are eager to have you as a customer and they treat everybody with respect. A big hello to our good friends in Omaha, Donald and Hank.

Always remember to have fun when traveling, meet new people and talk to everyone!
