Ontario: Guelph Readies for More Gay/Lesbian Travelers

Guelph is expected to become more of a tourist destination for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender crowd leading up to and during World Pride 2014, being held in Toronto.

Representatives from Travel Gay Canada were in the city Wednesday to meet with city officials and business leaders from Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo, talking about how the region can ready itself for an influx of gay and lesbian visitors, and capitalize both economically and culturally, short- and long-term.

“There are a lot of long-term implications as well,” said Darrell Schuurman, executive director of Travel Gay Canada, in an interview. “Destinations that are positioning themselves as gay and lesbian welcoming cities and regions are also encouraging and inviting people to set up shop and settle here. And it really shows that your city is progressive and open to diversity. From a business perspective, it helps put it on the radar.”
