Our dear friend, Bella (Dolly Goolsby) is on the go again, this time in Italy once again She has graciously allowed us to republish her travel blogs. Enjoy!

Venice, Italy - Rialto Bridge

Venice, ItalyGetting to Venice from Switzerland was not easy! In fact, I don’t think there is an easy way to get over the Alps. However, we did make it, with 5 train and bus transfers, and didn’t miss one connection.

We arrived in Venice about 5:00 p.m., got our vaporetto tickets and cruised down the Grand Canal to our stop near the Arsenale.

As soon as we dropped our luggage at the apartment, we headed back up toward the Canal, to have dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, right across from the vaporetto stop. We all had the grilled sea bass, sat and relaxed and watched the sun disappear behind the bell tower at St. Mark’s Square.

After dinner we walked down to St. Mark’s and enjoyed hearing “dueling orchestras”. Several of the elegant restaurants around the square have orchestras playing, so we could wander in the square, from one place to another, and hear the beautiful music.

Venice, ItalyI love Venice! As much as I thoroughly enjoyed Switzerland, once we got to Venice, I felt like I was in familiar territory. Although my Italian linguistic skills are still very poor, at least now I was hearing a language that sounded familiar. Of course, all of this is new for Kiri and Patrick. It is so fun seeing them enjoy these experiences.

Saturday morning we went into St. Mark’s then into the bell tower. There was an elevator in the bell tower, thank goodness. From the top we had an excellent bird’s eye view of Venice.

That evening we walked over to the neighborhood grocery, after which I sat down at an outdoor cafe and had an Aperol spritz, and the kids left to do more exploring. That night we had dinner in a restaurant near St Mark’s, outside, in a lovely balmy Venetian evening.
